Freak Magnets: Are You One?

A "freak magnet" is, quite simply, a person who attracts the attention of freaks. Example: a friend and former co-worker always seems to attract freaks, both in his private life (e.g., a number of ex-girlfriends) and his professional life (he always seemed to get the freakiest clients with the most fucked-up situations and scenarios). I think I'm a freak magnet too, though to a lesser extent than my friend -- and mostly it seems as if it's always the Jesus freaks (like this afternoon ...).

So, are you a freak magnet, do you know any freak magnets, or are you one of the freaks a freak magnet attracts?

I don't think I am. Well, aside from you people. ;-)

Of course I'm a freak magnet! I wouldn't have it any other way! Like attracts like! If you're worried about how many freaks you attract, then maybe you ought to look at your own life to see what is giving the impression of like-mindedness that is drawing them to you.

No matter what their problems or disadvantages, I have far more in common with freaks than I do with so-called "normals". I understand them just so much more, I feel like no matter how far out they are, there is still some common wavelength.

Except for Jesus Freaks. Terminate them with extreme prejudice.

Oh, I'm not necessarily worried (except for the Jesus Freaks, of course). I am just musing about the freak-magnet phenomenon. I generally tend to be annoyed by strangers, whether normal or freakish.

In a word: yes. Sometimes this works out very well (there are a number of very smart, witty, interesting and generally cool people that would be considered freaks), oftentimes not too well (stalkers, sociopaths, etc.).

I attract raving reliogus nuts. Apparently i have a sign on my back that says SAVE ME !

anthony, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, by my own standards, no. By Rest-Of-The-World standards, yes.

DG, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In a word, yes, I am a freak magnet. Men who get way too into me way too fast, people with all these fucked up voodoo beliefs, druggies. These are all the people I know, basically.

Ally, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks?

I wish! I wish freaks somehow sought me out, all I ever seem to meet are dullard norrrmal people. What can I do to attract the freeaks amongst us?

Discounting blood relatives? No, not usually. Well, except for psychos on the street wearing cardboard hockey goalie masks that want to tell me stories while I'm waiting for the street car, and people who spit on other people on the street for no reason, and middle aged women with Tourrette's syndrome who will try to claw your face off if you make random eye contact with them in a washroom mirror. Aside, from that, no.

I'm too rude to people to even be a HUMAN magnet

tarden, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Some people think so. I maintain that my friends are fairly resolutely normal, however.

I am QUEEN Freak Magnet, especially on public transport where my fellow travellers glance away sympathetically ignoring the fact that a helpless young girl is being harassed. At uni a very very large and psychotic mate-of-mates would get drunk and stalk me round the bar offering money for sex (he even offered my mate commission if she could talk me into it). Once on a bus a man sidled up and asked if I wanted to 'do a job' which involved going to an office he'd set up and hacking into computers. Hmmm. And in a pub in Soho with a fellow freak magnet we got Mr Countryside nutter who wanted to know how to get to the M40 from Wardour Street. This was after his foot and mouth conspiracy rant. I must have a kind face or something.

Just remembered another one having seen Karaoke thread.... man who is at least twice my age and possibly a tramp given his attire staggers over, grabs me and informs me that I don't want to talk to this lot (i.e. my friends) I want to go off with him. Freak! I cannot remember if I had already performed at this time but if he had heard me singing and still went through with it he's an even bigger freak.

nine years pass...

I used to be a freak magnet, until I prudently moved to the least freaky place in the entire state, where I currently huddle in seclusion, well away from the depths of the main freak pool.

I once had a long conversation with the Archangel Michael, who confided in me that he had arrived to initiate the Second Coming, wherein he would destroy the earth, after spiriting away the elect. And this was in the late 1970s, long before the Left Behind series was published. Hari krishnas always were inviting me to their "feasts", too. And Socialist Labor Party saddoes always seemed to think I was ripe for conversion, too. They seemed a lonely lot, few in number but strong in delusion.

Yes, unfortunately. I seem to attract especially batshit loony women these days. There was a time when that was "fun" but I'm too old for that crap nowadays.

I am actually secretly amused by the travails of freak magnets.

I guess it's not a secret anymore.

Not in terms of friends but I tend to meet/encounter complete freaks just in daily life more frequently than other people like the time I wound up at the apt of some lady realtor who was showing me apts and turned out to be a pot dealer who believed that she was never going to die, had painted portals to other universes all around her studio and belived that there were people walking around who were 1000s of years old. She wanted to mentor me so I too could stop aging but was kind enough to drive me home (and give me free weed) even when I declined the offer.

I meet insane people like that all the time. Ok maybe not quite that extreme but not all that far off. I think people just feel comfortable telling me things and the next thing you know the inner freaks come flying out.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Thursday, 30 June 2011 20:41 (fourteen years ago)

^^^ditto.

i find it difficult to just cold shoulder or blow off ppl and being polite sometimes scans as 'yes plz i would sincerely love to hear all about the predations of the illuminati'

rebel yelp (gbx), Thursday, 30 June 2011 20:43 (fourteen years ago)

lol exactly

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Thursday, 30 June 2011 20:44 (fourteen years ago)

I don't usually mind that much because it means that I end up meeting a lot of real characters which can be pretty entertaining.
