i'm relatively unlucky, but usually come up trumps with a mix of hard word, brains and charm.

Masonic Boom, Friday, 27 July 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

i put 7. i'm fairly healthy (to the best of my knowledge), have a good job, no major money worries, no major responsibilities/commitments, decent enough prospects and a reasonable degree of control of how my life is and where it's going within a western democracy that doesn't restrict my freedom of movement or expression unreasonably, i don't experience major harassment based on my appearance or lifestyle and i can go out and have fun with friends often in a city of many positives.

it would (and maybe should be regardless of the following) be higher if my family were richer financially and also stronger as a unit (parents still together and in love etc.) and i'd been better placed to take advantage of/create more of the opportunities i wanted now and in the past generally (but that's only half 'luck' at best really - ditto what shapes your personality in negative ways - inhibitions, phobias etc. - i still need less fear in my life). and slightly better looking, maybe.

blueski, Friday, 27 July 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

I guess I put 5. Neither lucky nor unlucky. Luck is all how you look at things.

jhøshea, Friday, 27 July 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

Is it wrong that the "u" and "u r" bother me?

Ms Misery, Friday, 27 July 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

no, just unlucky.

jhøshea, Friday, 27 July 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

i was born in a time and place where i am not especially at risk of death by disease or ethnic cleansing or starvation or anything, so that's some decent luck i guess.

"luck" as it applies to everyday life isn't really a concept worth thinking about though imo

sleep, Friday, 27 July 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

I think I have simulatenously the world's worst and best luck. Improbable wonderful and terrible things are always happening to me.

Abbott, Friday, 27 July 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

example?

Is it wrong that the "u" and "u r" bother me?

No, of course not. but it also shows how (ahum) old you are. ;-)
It sort of annoys me too. We're in the same boat/age group.

stevienixed, Friday, 27 July 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

shut it kenan you're a -15

hstencil, Friday, 27 July 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

oh wait shulda sed that on sanddouche thread. sorry dude.

hstencil, Friday, 27 July 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

Answering above question: like at one point my car got totalled by a drunken person, but the next day, at random, the university deposited $1800 into my bank account for no explainable reason...not a loan or anything. Bought new car.

OR: I get my financial aid taken away at old college, successfully appeal the one problem keeping me from getting it. Bad luck, then good luck: appeals process is slim chances of success. But then a new reason came up why I couldn't get financial aid. (Bad luck.) So I sell fucktons of stuff to go to a new college down south. (Neither good nor bad luck, but I had no idea how it would work out. Risky.) AND I got financial aid there. (Surprising enough.) And then I find out they transferred my credits but not my GPA (baffling good luck, as it was like 2.2 previously).

Or like it'll start raining as I'm walking (bad luck) just as I'm about to enter a sheltered area (good luck). Freak coincidences like that all the time.

Abbott, Friday, 27 July 2007 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

Consequently, it would be ideal if this were somehow a dual poll with one scale for bad luck and one for good, like that new & improved kinsey scale thing.

Abbott, Friday, 27 July 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

i'm crazy lucky! so far i have gotten every job i've ever wanted. i'm 30 so that's quite a few jobs! ummm i have lots of tiptop buddies, i live in a gorgeous city, my family is pretty cool - i have a lovely niece now. i got to study for two degrees and loved both of those and met lots of awesome people at both unis. i get to do lots of interesting and cool stuff at work and extracurricular-wise. the only reason i might not put 10/10 is i'm not so lucky in love. although i have had lots of tops boyfriends, so not completely unlucky either. actually i am pretty close to being the luckiest person in the world. i don't really believe in a 'god' but i give thanks to... whatever is out there that shines on me... every day.

gem, Saturday, 28 July 2007 12:27 (eighteen years ago)

dude, that doesn't sound like 'luck' - that's going out and making good shit happen for yourself, which is more than just fate or luck or whatever. that's character.

Rubyredd, Saturday, 28 July 2007 13:01 (eighteen years ago)

maybe. i am a bit of an over-achiever. but i really do think there is a huge amount of luck involved... being in the right place at the right time, that sort of thing. I like to think that doing good community-styles things brings good stuff back to me as well. but on the whole... still crazy-lucky.

gem, Saturday, 28 July 2007 13:09 (eighteen years ago)

the stuff abbott mentions as examples is what i would call 'luck', but getting great jobs, making great friends, having a great relationship with your family and being a generally happy and thankful person who appreciates the life they get to live - that all boils down to having the right attitude and disposition. and being in the right place/time etc. is a pay-off for being that way inclined. don't be afraid to say you earned what you have in life. it's a good thing.

i'm pretty much the opposite of you ;)

Rubyredd, Saturday, 28 July 2007 13:14 (eighteen years ago)

i dunno. i do work hard, there's no doubt. but it is still luck (i guess by that I mean 'beyond my control') being born in a cool country/state/town, to a family with the werewithal to provide me with a good start and show me that life can be wonderful. but what about falling into fabulous opportunities along the way? that doesn't happen to everyone. I suppose you do need to be brave to take hold of good opportunities and run with them, but even so... sometimes I find myself laughing out loud on sunny mornings, for no reason other than life is turning out so brilliantly. It almost makes me nervous! I wish everyone could be so lucky as me...

gem, Saturday, 28 July 2007 13:23 (eighteen years ago)

Surmounter, Saturday, 28 July 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

9.9

That leaves around 66,000,000 people luckier than me, which is probably about right. Knock on wood.

Kerm, Saturday, 28 July 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

I put 10. If I was a creepy hyper-religious person I'd say "I've been blessed" -- it's true. This is reinforced every day when I see my family and that I have a house and food and all that shit. I need to remember that, every single fucking day of my life.

Dimension 5ive, Saturday, 28 July 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not going to jinx myself by putting a number on it -- let's just say I'm damn lucky.

"It's far from 'loi' you were reared, boy" (darraghmac), Friday, 13 August 2010 12:52 (fifteen years ago)

I'm an extremely fortunate person in terms of life circumstances - a 9, I'd say.

In terms of 'luck' - winning lotteries, finding random valuable objects on the street, having ambiguous situations work out vastly in my favour - I am probably about a 5.
