How do you acquaint yourself with a new city?

When you move to a new city, are there any specific strategies you employ to feel out the town, and to maybe meet some people?

I'm more interested in, you know, unraveling a place's mystery, finding the city's soul etc etc than just developing a social network.

Having friends already there certainly helps, but I only have a couple in my new town. And I kind of like to discover a new place with minimal guidance/bias.

I've been doing a ton of walking. First I like to become as familiar as possible with my immediate vicinity. It's amazing how dense a place/any place is with interesting stuff when you look closely. But when you walk it's like the interesting things you find are mysterious codes that you don't yet have the key to... I guess it takes townies to crack these codes for you. But I'm slow to meet new people and I guess my question arises out of this frustration -- that discovering this place is something I'll sort of have to do alone.

My town has a millions bloggers but their blogs all seem to be vaguely or explicitly political, so that's not helping really.
