Canned vegetables

Tonight, my cat and I are both eating from cans. And I don't think I'm ashamed of it.

I'm partial to peas and corn (surprise), but I love me some mixed as well.

Are we too cool for canned vegetables?

Surmounter, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:20 (eighteen years ago)

Canned corn & beans are good for throwing into soups, and canned tomatoes have their uses too. But all others I don't much care for.

Abbott, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:24 (eighteen years ago)

ooh yah canned tomatos, word

Surmounter, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

and beans obv but wait are beans vegetables?

Surmounter, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

CREAMED CORN.

Drooone, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

Canned peas are not that good. They are all tiny like little cat testicles. Even the frozen ones are better than that.

Ima be ballin in your canned corn Surmounter.

humansuit, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:26 (eighteen years ago)

Creamed corn on Ryvita. Tinned pineapple chunks on pizza yes.

Hard like armour, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:26 (eighteen years ago)

It's not a question of cool, but I really don't like canned vegetables.

x-post:

except tomatoes obviously but they are like in their own category.

x-post:

I was listening to the Butthole Surfers earlier. Just the name alone is gross ("Creamed Corn").

x-post:

I don't like peas in general.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:27 (eighteen years ago)

But it's no creamed ON corn, scientist, it's 'creamed corn.' You need to pay careful attention to your pea's and q's when it comes to grammar.

humansuit, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:28 (eighteen years ago)

peas are my favvv

Surmounter, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:28 (eighteen years ago)

That's because they reminds you of your cat.

humansuit, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:29 (eighteen years ago)

Anyway, I think Surmounter just likes canned vegetables ironically.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:29 (eighteen years ago)

*sigh* The folling caned veg are ok = peas. That's about it. Sadly.

ENBB, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:30 (eighteen years ago)

u guys are ridic. they do NOT remind me of my cat - and maybe i am FORCEd to like them ironically because i can't afford anything else right now!

i mean come on they are really fucking cute...

Surmounter, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

Ironic in that 'Isn't it Ironic' not ironic way?

It's like canned peas,
when your cat got fixed
It's like creamed corn,
after a full work-day of porn
And isn't it ironic
Don't you think?

humansuit, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

hardeeharharhar =P

Surmounter, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:35 (eighteen years ago)

Canned peas are a mushfest, as are canned green beans. The only way I can get collard greens is in a can and they're pretty yum.

Abbott, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:36 (eighteen years ago)

I once had chicken curry in a can from Tescos back in the days. That was exactly like dog food so everything else is a step up.

humansuit, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:38 (eighteen years ago)

Man, one time outside the co-op across from my house, I found this 8-pack of designer canned soups. Turducken, quail,, all kinds of great stuff! I didn't have any food at the time (which was why I was looking outside the co-op: food was left in the parking lt & by the dumpster a lot), so I was K-EXCITED. But when I got home & saw them in the light I discovered they were designer dog foods.

Abbott, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:49 (eighteen years ago)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA that's really sad dude

Surmounter, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:49 (eighteen years ago)

The Le Sueur peas are awesome slopped into chicken pot pie, along with canned cranberry jelly. OH GOD.

Beth Parker, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 02:02 (eighteen years ago)

Turducken SOUP? Such a thing exists!?

MUSHY PEAS in a can are good. Also, tomatoes obv.

Trayce, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 05:11 (eighteen years ago)

Apparently not, but turducken DOG FOOD does. Turducken, the treat dogs ask for by name.

Abbott, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 05:16 (eighteen years ago)

I rarely eat canned veggies. Lately I have been using (and eating) a lot of frozen veggies.

stevienixed, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 06:39 (eighteen years ago)

tomatoes obv dont count, creamed corn on toast is indeed a heart warming winter treat yet I feel only two vegetables are worth serious consideration, namely beetroot and asparagus both of which are perfectly acceptable from a can

Kiwi, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 07:34 (eighteen years ago)

tomatoes are not a vegetable, guys

emsk, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 09:03 (eighteen years ago)

Well, she did say "Obv don't count" :-) That said, I keep forgetting they're fruit. :-(

stevienixed, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 09:09 (eighteen years ago)

Woah how did I forget beetroot.

Trayce, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 09:11 (eighteen years ago)

Canned asparagus is ass though. Its only nice fresh.

Trayce, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 09:11 (eighteen years ago)

Hwo do you prepare canned asparagus? DO you just put it in the microwave?

stevienixed, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 09:14 (eighteen years ago)

We always got served it cold! Like, with salad. No wonder I always hated the stuff.

Trayce, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 09:16 (eighteen years ago)

I am always puzzled by the presence of tinned carrots, potatoes and mushrooms in shops. I have bought tinned spinach in the past, though.

Also, Ipcress File to thread.

rener, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 09:29 (eighteen years ago)

Food and spies you say? Well why not try this.

kv_nol, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 09:46 (eighteen years ago)

For canned veg: Corn niblets eaten with a spoon straight from can with a hangover. Bliss.

kv_nol, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 10:09 (eighteen years ago)

I love mushrooms but canned ones are the devil's sputum.

Trayce, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 10:13 (eighteen years ago)

Kv_lol: that article is great.

Man, I really want this cookbook now.

rener, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 10:14 (eighteen years ago)

Glad you liked it. I enjoyed the pained tone re. coffee plunger :)

kv_nol, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 10:33 (eighteen years ago)

We appear to have killed the thread. *sob*

Maybe it's time to diversify into other improbable canned goods. So, what about those tinned All-Day Breakfasts and tinned steak'n'kidney pies, then? Eh? Eh?

rener, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 12:01 (eighteen years ago)

I lived with a chap who had a taste for the tinned steak and kidney pie...nothing like coming across the tin in the morning, empty but garnished with a couple of cigarette butts.

Old Rottenhat, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 12:04 (eighteen years ago)

I have always been curious, but never brave enough, to try them. I just think of where the phrase "Fanny Adams" came from and stays my reaching hand!

kv_nol, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 13:34 (eighteen years ago)

I'd never heard the origins of that phrase before. Very Sweeney Toddesque.

Back to tins, hey, ravioli is another one. I mean, what's that all about?

Or tinned croissants! Someone I know thought "tinned croissants" were a bunch of croissants packed IN BRINE into a tin. Nom nom nom.

rener, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 13:50 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha more likely his brane.

What's so horrible about mushrooms in tins? Too soft? What do you use it for? I'd venture to say: solely in things like bolognese?

stevienixed, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 13:51 (eighteen years ago)

Theyre all slimy!

Trayce, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 13:55 (eighteen years ago)

Nom nom nom indeed!

When I was but a bairn *awwww* (I thank you) my father as a special treat for my elder sister used to make them for her. Needless to say we were informed on the down low that if we let her believe this we would also get croissants. Machiavelli had nothin' on my family!

Mushrooms in tins I've not tried. I just think that veg in tins should be avoided if there is a fresh alternative to hand. Also I never drive to shop or similar and tins are heavy so I don't have to think about it really...

kv_nol, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 13:55 (eighteen years ago)

one of my friends has been known to eat canned All Day Breakfast

The Real Dirty Vicar, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 14:00 (eighteen years ago)

We'll all be laughing the other side of our faces when TEH APOCALYPSE happens and all the survivalists will be chomping away on their cleverly-stockpiled tinned mushies and All-Day Breakfasts while we starve to death.

rener, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

i'm currently addicted to the canned chicken curry from Lidl, with a baked spud.

Ste, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

Fray Bentos! Been trying to think of the brand name since lunchtime. Peak Frean was another one I thought had been made up by sitcom writers until a trip to England brought me face to face with the hideous truth.

Old Rottenhat, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

To canned vegetables, I say "No!"

Forgot My Pencil, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

Well, tinned (or rather, for me, frozen) veggies are grebt so I don't have to go to the veggie shop every single week or less. Yes, they are heavy but then I have all my heavy groceries delivered (for free!).

stevienixed, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

beetroot
potatoes
peas

^^^delicious

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

ooh potatoes, don't know that i've ever tried the canned

Surmounter, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

I have a soft spot for french tins of beans and peas, Chris thinks I'm mad. Sweetcorn obviously is fine, though having just recently got a freezer again I much preferred it frozen. I think that's it for tinned veg in our larder. Not counting things that aren't really veg - beans, tomatoes, lentils, etc.

Vicky, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

I love your accent.

humansuit, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

i love lentils

Surmounter, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 17:02 (eighteen years ago)

In this month's Esquire, Giada de Laurentiis says that fresh tomatos are a waste of time. I'll never trust her again.

milo z, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

wtf man, i just prepared some bolognese with fresh tomatos. she's nuts.

stevienixed, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

bologneseeeeee..... MMMMMMM

and yeah what does that mean, waste of time? they're only one of my favorite foods ever

Surmounter, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 19:36 (eighteen years ago)

Ewww, tinned potatoes are weird. Only tinned veg in our house = tomatoes.

Tinned mushrooms are the food of satan.

ailsa, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

Tinned fruit on the other hand = num num num guilty vice alert!

ailsa, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

I have met awesome, brilliant-cook Italian mothers who have sworn my canned tomatoes and would never use fresh unless they were making their own passatta, or having fresh ones in salads etc. Italian brands of canned plum tomatoes are way better than anything I ever have fresh.

Trayce, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 23:20 (eighteen years ago)

(for sauces etc I mean)

Trayce, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 23:20 (eighteen years ago)

right... ugh i really need to start making my own sauce. my boyfriend's mom is uber italian and her suace/meatballs kill me. meatballs and sauce could very well be like my favorite food. on noodles of course.

but fresh tomatos are so great for so MANY things = salsa, salads, just on their own, sandwhiches. i guess w/ respect to sauce tho, they could be considered a waste of time.

having canned white corn right now. yes it is that kind of week and WHO ARE YOU TO JUDGE ME?

i think i really need to get into tinned fruit.

Surmounter, Thursday, 2 August 2007 01:32 (eighteen years ago)

Oh well you couldnt use canned tomatoes in sammiches/salads in any case.

Trayce, Thursday, 2 August 2007 01:44 (eighteen years ago)

ha no

Surmounter, Thursday, 2 August 2007 02:05 (eighteen years ago)

eww can u imagine?

Surmounter, Thursday, 2 August 2007 02:05 (eighteen years ago)

I know you can imagine. Actually Surmounter I believe this warrants a thread in which you eat things out of a can in weird combinations. Maybe even in weird circumstances. Creamed corn off Alanis Morissette's left breast. With visual evidence.

humansuit, Thursday, 2 August 2007 02:08 (eighteen years ago)

We use canned black beans all the time. With chicken chorizo they are the bomb. Add a little homemade Pico de Gallo salsa and you're talking five-star restaurant quality.

Beth Parker, Thursday, 2 August 2007 02:10 (eighteen years ago)

I have heard tell that creamed corn added into cornbread batter results in good results.

Beth Parker, Thursday, 2 August 2007 02:11 (eighteen years ago)

that sounds like a fantastic photo op, xp

DEFINITELY beth, that's one of my bf and i's favorite dinners. we add carmelized onions, over rice? mmmmmmmmmmmmm

Surmounter, Thursday, 2 August 2007 02:11 (eighteen years ago)

i really don't know that i've ever had creamed corn. it scares me. i like the kernels

Surmounter, Thursday, 2 August 2007 02:12 (eighteen years ago)

But the kernels would surely roll off a breast making for a very unsatisfying eating and photographic experience.

humansuit, Thursday, 2 August 2007 02:14 (eighteen years ago)

well alanis of all ppl could definitely find a way of keeping them on her breast. but right for alanis creamed really might be best

Surmounter, Thursday, 2 August 2007 02:15 (eighteen years ago)

It would be ironic.

humansuit, Thursday, 2 August 2007 02:16 (eighteen years ago)

don't ya think?

i'm sorry it was like one of those itches. it just had 2 come out

Surmounter, Thursday, 2 August 2007 02:17 (eighteen years ago)

I think it was warranted.

humansuit, Thursday, 2 August 2007 02:17 (eighteen years ago)

:::wave of relief::

Surmounter, Thursday, 2 August 2007 02:17 (eighteen years ago)

Creamed corn has kernels! And cream! And shitloads of sugar, yay America.

Beth Parker, Thursday, 2 August 2007 02:20 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha... so roseanne

Surmounter, Thursday, 2 August 2007 02:20 (eighteen years ago)

which is absolutely a good thing, obv

Surmounter, Thursday, 2 August 2007 02:21 (eighteen years ago)

Unquestionably. I haven't eaten canned creamed corn in ages, but I have eaten corn chowder. I started this canned soup thread a while back:
Canned Soup Yumminess
