Giamatti should be front and center with that look.

so did anyone actually see this
― river wolf, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 12:21 (seventeen years ago)
I saw it. It's this year's version of Crank
― Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 14:50 (seventeen years ago)
Yes. It bear comparison with both Crank and Children Of Men.
― Pete, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 14:52 (seventeen years ago)
Lies, lies all lies.
Crank was funny and well-directed. This was a steaming pile of shit.
― milo z, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 14:55 (seventeen years ago)
Milo is understating the case against Shoot Em Up here. Although Crank wasn't nearly as good as Transporter 2.
― Oilyrags, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 15:07 (seventeen years ago)
True Transporter 2 is best, but Shoot 'Em Up was a better choreographed shooting film. And has some slightly better gags.
― Pete, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 16:20 (seventeen years ago)
"Crank was funny and well-directed."
Okay the former I can maybe see, but the latter? Puhleeze.
― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 16:21 (seventeen years ago)
this is OTM on all accounts. shoot 'em up is truly fucking painfully terrible. crank is ehh. transporter 2 is awesome.
― johnny crunch, Thursday, 10 January 2008 02:26 (seventeen years ago)
i liked this movie a lot
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 10 January 2008 02:32 (seventeen years ago)
good way to burn 85 minutes or w/e
not worth seeing in the theater. I would've loved to see Crank in the theater though.
― El Tomboto, Thursday, 10 January 2008 02:33 (seventeen years ago)
still want to see this
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 10 January 2008 02:38 (seventeen years ago)
though i totally don't get if it's action or action-comedy or like meta-action-comedy or whatever
i think stuff like this and Smokin' Aces are kind of a genre unto themselves now, basically the same as 90's Pulp Fiction ripoffs but without much of the pretension to being especially hip or smart. like that Mel Gibson movie Payback but more fun and intentionally mindless.
― Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 10 January 2008 02:42 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah I get the same vibe, shit that's Tarantino-esque in that it's humorous and crime-capery, but doesn't pretend to go after anything more substantial.

― johnny crunch, Thursday, 10 January 2008 02:49 (seventeen years ago)
hey are youse guys talking about movies from KOREA AND HONG KONG
― El Tomboto, Thursday, 10 January 2008 02:50 (seventeen years ago)
I'm no quentin hater but calling this genre, such as it is, "tarantino-esque" is a bit revisionist/hollywood centric
― El Tomboto, Thursday, 10 January 2008 02:51 (seventeen years ago)
the big hit was a pioneer in this HK ripoff genre
― omar little, Thursday, 10 January 2008 02:53 (seventeen years ago)
sorry dude idk what to tell you. i mean you are asked to ditch your disbelief before you enter into the theatre and if you can rid yourself of that then it's pretty thrilling tbh.
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 10 January 2008 02:53 (seventeen years ago)
as it exists today, that is
― omar little, Thursday, 10 January 2008 02:54 (seventeen years ago)
the big hit seems totally korean to me but that's probably because I never saw the hk film the koreans were ripping off
― El Tomboto, Thursday, 10 January 2008 02:54 (seventeen years ago)
in my mind, the korean crime caper films are typically more likely to be parody/homage than hk
― El Tomboto, Thursday, 10 January 2008 02:56 (seventeen years ago)
xpost no i know for sure re: ditching disbelief, i sought this out to see on that basis. its just poorly done, poorly cut, written, acted. the absurdity aspect of the shit actually going down is ok by me
― johnny crunch, Thursday, 10 January 2008 02:57 (seventeen years ago)
kirk wong--who directed the big hit--hasn't done anything since. back in hk he was a pretty big name. did organized crime and triad bureau, crime story, rock n roll cop, etc. he was like lumet--with stunts!
― omar little, Thursday, 10 January 2008 02:58 (seventeen years ago)

fair enough!
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 10 January 2008 03:01 (seventeen years ago)
payback is trying to be a whole 'nother thing (ie point blank-style noir).1
― Jordan, Thursday, 10 January 2008 03:47 (seventeen years ago)
But much grittier and less witty than the orig stuff
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 10 January 2008 03:47 (seventeen years ago)
like that Mel Gibson movie Payback but more fun and intentionally mindless.
RONG. I don't even see the comparison (Payback is black comedy-noir, Smokin' Aces and Shoot 'em up are cartoon action flicks).
But there's no conceivable way something in this genre could be more fun than the either cut of Payback.
― milo z, Thursday, 10 January 2008 03:48 (seventeen years ago)
ps Payback is fucking awesome.
― milo z, Thursday, 10 January 2008 03:49 (seventeen years ago)
i didn't remember the original cut of payback all that well, but really enjoyed the new cut i saw a few months ago.

Shoot Em Up >>>>>>>>>>>>> Smokin Aces, better set pieces, more charismatic performers, doesn't get emo at the end, etc, etc.
i ever so slightly preferred this to Children Of Men.
― da croupier, Thursday, 10 January 2008 03:56 (seventeen years ago)
Both movies have great action sequences and Clive Owen protecting a baby. One tries to sell ridiculous sci-fi as haunting social commentary, the other has "Ace Of Spades."
― da croupier, Thursday, 10 January 2008 03:58 (seventeen years ago)
this movie is fuckin ridiculous. and lame.
the big hit was awesome tho.

Meta action comedy is the closest. It's deliberately way way over the top, and tries for laughs (but fails) there are a number of clangingly obvious comparisons of the Giamatti/Owen rivalry to Bugs vs Fudd. I think these are supposed to make you aware of the live-action cartooniness of it all (which couldn't possibly be missed - it has everything but animated birds flying around the heads of people who get punched) and also predispose viewers to like it, since presumably everyone likes looney toons. What it did for me, though, was make me wish I'd spent my money at Vulcan renting Tex Avery shorts.
― Oilyrags, Thursday, 10 January 2008 05:44 (seventeen years ago)
man i miss vulcan so much now that i'm further north.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 10 January 2008 06:19 (seventeen years ago)
This was so fucking bad. I thought it was directly comparable to Crank as well, would've preferred watching Crank again instead of this pile of shit.

The fuck?
― S-, Thursday, 10 January 2008 07:12 (seventeen years ago)
oh god i saw this earlier this week. it is something i would expect troy duffy to make after overhearing a conversation between two film students in his crappy bar. first action scene was the best, but even during that i could tell the schtick was going to get old very, very fast. and it did. like, before the end of the scene.
crank comparisons OTM. crank had much better jumping out of planes and fighting as falling. tons of other movies had better jump down centre of stairwell scene.
i can't abide stupid shit that thinks it isn't stupid shit. at least crank is honest.
― Gukbe, Thursday, 10 January 2008 08:43 (seventeen years ago)
also, clive owen was wasted and paul giamatti was awful. so it loses more points there.
― Gukbe, Thursday, 10 January 2008 08:44 (seventeen years ago)
Just got this thru netflix. It's hilariously disposable, but I enjoyed it.
Soundtrack was ace, too.
― kingfish, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 05:48 (seventeen years ago)
i almost watched this the other day but watched a really trippy anime instead
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 05:56 (seventeen years ago)
couldn't make it past the first 5 minutes
― latebloomer, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 06:14 (seventeen years ago)
i liked it. a lot. while i was watching it. i don't think about it much these days. it was a little less cloying than Smokin' Aces, though SA had the Make-Up on the sdtrk.
― Dr. Superman, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 07:12 (seventeen years ago)
i can't abide stupid shit that thinks it isn't stupid shit
sums it up nicely. also, giamatti is awful in it.
― darraghmac, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 10:12 (seventeen years ago)
this was really awful. adding a few self-aware jokes about how cliched action films are does not make your film a clever and insightful take on the genre
― 囧 (dyao), Monday, 16 November 2009 07:58 (fifteen years ago)
this movie pretty much sucked balls.
― jØrdån (omar little), Monday, 16 November 2009 08:10 (fifteen years ago)
i don't remember a damn thing about this movie
― house of flying jaggers (J0rdan S.), Monday, 16 November 2009 08:14 (fifteen years ago)
i just thought i remembered a few scenes from it but they were actually from that jolie movie where she can curve bullets
this was a cute bugs bunny cartoon
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 16 November 2009 15:09 (fifteen years ago)
this was probably the worst movie i've ever seen, or at least a top-5 contender
