tremendoid, Friday, 3 August 2007 00:52 (eighteen years ago)

JERRY: You should try this new dental floss Glide, it's fantastic.

NEWMAN: I use dental tape.

JERRY: You should try this.

NEWMAN: I don't wanna.

JERRY: Not even once?

NEWMAN: No.

JERRY: You're an idiot.

NEWMAN: Why, because I use dental tape?

JERRY: Right, anyone who uses dental tape is an idiot.

tremendoid, Friday, 3 August 2007 00:54 (eighteen years ago)

so there's that

tremendoid, Friday, 3 August 2007 00:55 (eighteen years ago)

You know when the floss gets stuck at the bottom of the spool? That is the worst.

gabbneb, Friday, 3 August 2007 00:56 (eighteen years ago)

Glide works a little too well -- just because the implement successfully breaches the gap between your teeth doesn't necessarily mean it's cleaning and clearing said gap.

Dentotape. What's showerfloss?

Rich Smörgasbord, Friday, 3 August 2007 01:21 (eighteen years ago)

Forget about that. Where's Goldenshower?

When I go to the dentist (seldom) there is never anything wrong with my teeth. So when they tell me I need to floss I'm like "um...but I've gotten away with not flossing for years!" Where's the incentive? I have heard it's supposed to be good for your heart to floss, though, strangely enough.

Bimble, Friday, 3 August 2007 05:13 (eighteen years ago)

Ironically, though I did actually floss last night. Something in my teeth was bugging me so I figured I'd do the whole lot.

Bimble, Friday, 3 August 2007 05:19 (eighteen years ago)

thats so awesome.

Yeah, I think it helps prevent gingivitis, and gingivitis can have negative effects on your heart. Although where I got that idea, I have no idea, so maybe I'm making it up entirely.

I floss every night, though, just in case. Also because I PHEAR THE DENTISTS.

Sara R-C, Friday, 3 August 2007 12:57 (eighteen years ago)

I *think* there is something about chronic, low-grade inflammation caused by gingivitis having an adverse effect on the heart.

what about woven floss? bought some on accident, hated it, but now strangely prefer it.

It's a quick path from your gums to your heart apparently. Anyone who has had rheumatic fever (which damages the heart valves) has to take a prophylactic course of antibiotics for a few days prior to any dental work and studies are finding direct correlation to the level of a particular bacteria in the mouth to heart attacks. Other factors, esp. smoking, were assumed to be the agent at first, but more evidence is pointing to the bacteria (which is higher in smokers due to reduced saliva/change in mouth pH/etc). Either way, I hate having dental work done, even simple cleanings, and flossing makes that quicker and less likely to involve sharp pointy implements. Showerfloss for me, every morning I'm home, and string floss (whatever happens to be the last one I bought) while traveling.

Jaq, Friday, 3 August 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

I use the Glide and this morning I paid attention to whether or not it felt like it was doing anything, and I'm pretty sure it was. My teeth are so tightly packed that even with the Glide it takes a bit of effort to get it through the gaps without having it slip and slice through my gums. Sorry about that image. I also use a pre-brush rinse and a post-brush mouthwash, so for at least a few minutes a day my mouth is pretty clean. Most days I only brush once so it seems necessary to do all that in the morning.

I like that Oral B Ultra Floss, it's like insulated unwaxed, or something.

Trip Maker, Friday, 3 August 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

Yah, my boyfriend has immune and cardiac problems, and the one time he went to the dentist and didn't take horse-sized antibiotic pills, he ended up with endocarditis. So...

Abbott, Friday, 3 August 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

I mean obviously he's got the whole thing WAY heightened, but bacteria in his mouth got in his bloodstream via the gums & fucked up his heart for a while. Someday we'll find it, the flossing connection–the lover, the dreamer & me.

My friend/roomie bought a bunch of those one night while stoned and spent the next seven hours flossing her teeth while watching MTV2.

brushpicks look interesting

rrrobyn, Friday, 3 August 2007 21:24 (eighteen years ago)

but not as interesting as Showerfloss

i brush lightly first, floss, then brush with more integrity and purpose again, then gargle/rinse with listerine or salt water. take that, BACTERIA!

i was having a conversation with a guy i know from england who was on sabbatical here this summer and for some reason we were talking about teeth and he told me he thought dental hygiene was all blown out of proportion and that he only brushes at night! and just rinses his mouth in the morning! and i couldn't help but respond with "guh!"

rrrobyn, Friday, 3 August 2007 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah even if that's true it's the kind of information you shouldn't share, because it's disgusting & shows a severe lack of self-respect (IMO).

Abbott, Friday, 3 August 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)

GUM Soft Picks

Michael White, Friday, 3 August 2007 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

so who flosses before they brush & who flosses after? is there a standard order?

sweet tater, Friday, 3 August 2007 21:41 (eighteen years ago)

you brush lightly to loosen things up, then floss, then brush again after for total cleanness!

rrrobyn, Friday, 3 August 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.
