no

RJG, Friday, 3 August 2007 10:48 (eighteen years ago)

watched it once. if i genuinely had nothing better to do with my time -- no toenails to pick or navel to contemplate -- i might even watch it again.

grimly fiendish, Friday, 3 August 2007 10:49 (eighteen years ago)

even if this is quite funny i can't be bothered to watch it.

blueski, Friday, 3 August 2007 10:52 (eighteen years ago)

Shouild have called it "Trolls on a Phone"

Mark G, Friday, 3 August 2007 10:56 (eighteen years ago)

some of its tropes has the potential to cross over into common usage. i can't think of HDTV or DVDs without saying them his way now (much like vid-ay-oh and oo-erver from, er, some Scottish sketch show bloody years ago that took the piss out of welsh pronunciation).

fonejacker has all the more resonance for me because on wednesday a guy called me saying he was "police officer - fbi" and just kept repeating "wossyorname? wossyorname?" until i hung up...

CharlieNo4, Friday, 3 August 2007 11:08 (eighteen years ago)

"tropes have" - ugh, sorry.

"absolutely". which had john sparkes (welsh) and morwenna banks (maybe welsh) in it too. and was FUCKING GENIUS.

grimly fiendish, Friday, 3 August 2007 11:11 (eighteen years ago)

haven't watched an episode yet, it being in every single ad break for a month kinda made me sick of it.

speaking of these tropes, i caught myself thinking of wasptard (mustard that comes from wasps, obviously) just this morning.

also, 'video' as pronounced by vivian (rick?) from the young ones.

koogs, Friday, 3 August 2007 11:16 (eighteen years ago)

terry tibbs already has 2 myspaces.

pisces, Friday, 3 August 2007 11:19 (eighteen years ago)

I don't like prank call shows in any case, and this is no different to any other, really. They always come across as disrespectful and rude as opposed to subversive.

The Wayward Johnny B, Friday, 3 August 2007 11:22 (eighteen years ago)

"absolutely". which had john sparkes (welsh) and morwenna banks (maybe welsh) in it too. and was FUCKING GENIUS.

oops my bad, memory a little hazy.

see, i was all about the disdain when first watching fonejacker but then found myself laughing at a lot of the more absurd stuff (east end gangster perusing the small ads etc). he doesn't seem out to make people look stupid specifically, it's more about creating a surreal, nonsensical exchange i think. it's more like victor lewis-smith's haile selassie bbc reception thing of old.

CharlieNo4, Friday, 3 August 2007 11:55 (eighteen years ago)

I think it's pretty funny in parts, particularly Terry Tibbs and the guy selling internetings. My mouse is crap though.

John Sparkes does a lot of stuff that's only shown in Wales - Barry Welsh is Coming was very funny, as was Pub Quiz. The last thing I saw him on, a few months ago, was a walking tour of great welsh pubs, and it was beyond boring.

nate woolls, Friday, 3 August 2007 12:08 (eighteen years ago)

Oops, the mouse, not my mouse.

nate woolls, Friday, 3 August 2007 12:09 (eighteen years ago)

i hated the idea of this and hated the ads for it but out of boredom watched a segment on youtube and it truly brought the lolz. the animations that go with the calls really make it. ch4 didn't help by screening the unfunniest clips *constantly* on ad breaks.

NI, Friday, 3 August 2007 12:20 (eighteen years ago)

i caught some of it between Studio 60 ad breaks last night. bits were funny, but exactly what percentage of the show draws its humour from "LOL foreigners talk funny"?

stevie, Friday, 3 August 2007 12:23 (eighteen years ago)

37% or thereabouts

CharlieNo4, Friday, 3 August 2007 12:56 (eighteen years ago)

there's TERRY TIBBS t.shirts *already*.

The only funny prank calls ever:

Victor Lewis Smith

Paul Garner and Chris Morris on the Chris Morris Radio One show

The Jerky Boys when I was sixteen

James Mitchell, Saturday, 4 August 2007 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

4) Steve Coogan phoning up Piers Morgan and pretending to be Bono

Dom Passantino, Saturday, 4 August 2007 21:41 (eighteen years ago)

caught clips of this virally through boingboing, got hooked on the the 'doovde' guy then downloaded the rest of the episodes. they get better and better with the most recent ep (5?) being roffle-tastic from start to finish. major thumbs up, and yes, half the best jokes are in the visuals.

BATTAGS, Saturday, 4 August 2007 22:26 (eighteen years ago)

not even SEEN ep 5 yet. can't wait.

pisces, Saturday, 4 August 2007 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

lemme tickla ya

pisces, Saturday, 4 August 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

fuck. s'pose i should give this another chance, then.

John Sparkes does a lot of stuff that's only shown in Wales

really? i love that dude. gah.

grimly fiendish, Sunday, 5 August 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

does he/the producer/ch4 really have to contact the people back and get permission to use these clips? if so how on earth did they get the 'IM IN BED... FUCK OFF' guy to agree

one of the best things about it is that it's not mean humour, the 'victim' is either baffled or many cases laughing along, there's no spite in it. it's refreshing after so many years of morris/gervais style cruelty

NI, Monday, 6 August 2007 00:44 (eighteen years ago)

.. well, apart from the old lady getting "coronary" captions etc..

Mark G, Monday, 6 August 2007 08:15 (eighteen years ago)

4) Steve Coogan phoning up Piers Morgan and pretending to be Bono

OK this I need to see, what was it on?

Trayce, Monday, 6 August 2007 10:08 (eighteen years ago)

It was Chris Morris, and it was on a flexidisc w/ Select magazine.

Mark G, Monday, 6 August 2007 10:09 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

This is a lot better than it has any right to be. Particularly "internetings" and the canvas stretcher.

the next grozart, Monday, 20 August 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

Why have the last two episodes been repeats of earlier episodes in this series? Last night's was the first episode, I think.

nate woolls, Friday, 24 August 2007 13:14 (eighteen years ago)

The voices are spot on, esp. Terry Tibbs, but this show never seems as funny as it could be. I liked the old geezer going on about taking cary Grant up in a balloon. SOme of it's unwatchable tho.

Tom D., Friday, 24 August 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

Anyone see it last week when he sang "Get Ur Freak On" to some record store guys?
