RFI: IMAX Movies

So tonight I'm going to see the new Harry Potter at the IMAX. I've only ever been to the IMAX at the natural history museum in Fort Worth. There it's a dome and they just show 30 min. documentaries about sharks and stuff.

But this is a full length, 3D movie, not a dome, and I want to know what to expect. How important is where I sit? Should I plan on getting there extra early to get the best seat for the best viewing? The tix said no late seating so arrive at least 20 min early. Does this mean you can't get up to go to the bathroom??

3d glasses give me major headache

Yeah I'm worried about that a bit too. Apparently only the last 20 min are 3D though.

I don't know how much it matters where you sit. Imax is extreme stadium-style.

Batman Begins was fantastic in Imax.

But can you get up to go to the bathroom? This is U&K for me. I have a bladder with a short-attention span and HP is 2 and a half hours long.

Ms Misery, Friday, 3 August 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

honestly, I think you can probably figure this one out on your own.

kenan, Friday, 3 August 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

If I could I wouldn't be asking. The site implied that the seating situation was difficult which is why there was no late seating. I thought maybe we'd be strapped in or something like a ride.

Seriously, I only go to Alamo. The not being able to order beer thing is freaking me out enough as it is.

I do seem to remember a warning at the curved-screen IMAX at Fernbank, "If you leave the theater, you will not be able to get back in." Those were like 50-minute documentaries though.

Maybe it's like a Mexican bar and there's just a trough beneath the seats.

golden showers ahoy

the 3D effect is heightened by how much of the image fills your field of vision, so sitting in the middle of the screen will improve the experience, and they may want to prevent reentry out of an interest in minimizing the impact of the reenterer on viewers' depth of field, though it may have more to do with avoiding liability given probably steep stairs and the potential impact of the visual experience on balance.

if a 'difficult' seating situation means something beyond the above it may be that Imax Harry Potter is really, really popular and they want to avoid crying kids who don't show up early enough and/or exacerbation of the above issues due to infrequent and/or young Imax-goers - maybe they assign seats based on time of entry and/or likeliness of exit?

or, what kenan said - they can't prevent you from leaving, but if you're going to do so, sit on the aisle

The last IMAX movie I saw was the third Harry Potter movie (I think...) - it was at the Minnesota Zoo. We could leave the theater for the bathroom, but it was awfully far away from the theater itself. Your mileage may vary... but I would expect to be able to get to a bathroom.

I appreciate all your feedback. I'm sure whatever the circumstances turn out to be, the end result will be good. This is my third viewing and I'm just as excited as the first.

I'm also excited since my guy has agreed to go. I'm hoping the awesomeness of IMAX will stop him from calling HP ghey. :(

I've been to a few IMAX films and I find the best place to sit is generally maybe about 2/3 up from the front row, as sitting too high or too far down you might have to strain a take in the whole screen, and in the middle of a seating aisle if you can help it (though walking over 30 peoples' knees to go to the bathroom might be a pain). Have fun! IMAX theatres are pretty awesome.

should read "strain to take"

eleven years pass...

are there any playing or upcoming movies worth seeing in true IMAX (vs lie-max)? Apparently the only movies filmed in IMAX cameras recently were the infinity warses.
