Branca Menta is the mint version of Fernet Branca. It's too 40% alcohol and has a very firm herbal, bitterness, but it is supplemented by an intense mint scent. Like Fernet Branca, you can drink it mixed with cola. Or, you can serve it straight on ice. Once it is chilled and slightly watered down, you can either sip it or knock it back in one shot. Either way, it has an icy, crisp taste that is quite refreshing and will also give you a bit of that magic Branca high.

I usually drink it warm but at certain moments a coke & fernet on ice can be very helpful

basically fernet is for people who can't tolerate the sugar levels of jaeger but still miss the slowburn opiate rush that creeps in with the second shot

I like it straight, unchilled, sometimes with a ginger ale chaser and I never have more than two shots. It's a digestive, not a good drink. If you get a chance, try the Fernet Stock from the Czech Republic - same taste but slightly less viscous.

Hm. I'm thinking Fernet is quite good on its own, and that a chaser defeats the purpose. Also, mixers, while tolerable, are like adding water to good scotch. This is against Campari, which requires a mixer for premium enjoyment.

I have an empty Becherovka bottle in my kitchen! The lad and one of my mates love drinking bitters and other random odd Eurofag spirits so they tried it out. I cant imagine getting through even one glass and that bottle is huge.

yeah fergus henderson has a lot of love for the fernet-branca. i remember some other article where he said it's his first drink of the morning 'to open the eyes, calm the kidneys and start the day'. so cool.

I have a friend that works in the restaurant industry who used to show up to work and ask for a 'cold espresso' (served in a demi-tasse for the sake of discretion) as an eye opener.

Had a bit of a Branca Mental evening last night, brought a bottle to a party and to my amazement almost the whole thing got drunk (and drunk straight). Popular opinion was "it's not as repulsive as Fernet". Some evidence of strange psychological aftereffects today.

Cynar is made with artichokes, iIrc, and I've only had it served before dinner.

Ramazotti is a good amaro if you find Fernet to be to bitter.

to be fair to the fernet, the fear that has started kicking in, and which is one of the main reasons I've cut down radically on my drinking, is nowhere near as bad as that of whisky. (yes this is probable mystic bullshit, but I associate different drunks and consequently different hangovers with similar strength drinks - fernet's always been a winner here for me)

There's a great chapter on bitters and herbal liqueurs in Jason Wilson's "Boozehound." I guess American tastes run to the sweet and Euro tastes run to the ... gross? Just kidding. But I couldn't imagine drinking stuff like this, Pernod, Campari, absinthe, Benedictine, Chartreuse and other spirits along those lines straight. They're tough enough in a lot of cocktails!

I was in a goth band a year or two ago and we had a habit at every show of everyone doing a shot of this before we played.

Equal parts Fernet Branca, Campari, and Cynar, with a pinch of salt and a twist of grapefruit = the Bottecchia, which makes for a great nightcap.

Revive for Christmas. Fernet in cocktails has never worked for me because it just ends up tasting like adulterated Fernet but the other day I had this in Dublin:

Olmeca Reposado Tequila, sweet vermouth, Green Chartreuse, Fernet Branca, VCC porter, gomme syrup, Orinoco Bitters, with lemon oils

and it turns out that tequila + Chartreuse + Guinness can gang up on the Fernet and come to a truce.

also interesting. i’ve got a large and steadily diminishing bottle of fernet in the kitchen cupboard. steadily diminishing because i’ve got into the bad habit of pouring myself several large slugs of the stuff after returning home from a night out.

In Madrid a few years ago, my wife ordered fernet at a bar, expecting to get a little digestif-sized serving. The bartender clearly didn't know what the stuff was, even though she had a bottle of it, so she gave my wife a full 8-oz glass of it, no rocks or anything. Just a whole glass of room-temp fernet. Most of it got left behind when we went to the next bar.

I am not generally a fan of alternative Fernets...but I've been drinking Fernet Francisco and it's pretty good! More open than yr Branca but equally consumable in large quantities...

we actually bought a small bottle of Jaegermeister recently, something I hadn't tasted in probably 25 years

It was ice cold and it wasn't half bad - nice herbal profile, not too sweet
