wow, adrift on memory foam!
― scott seward, Monday, 6 August 2007 04:11 (eighteen years ago)
My mum had a waterbed when my folks were together. I couldn't stand to sleep in it, but it was fine for making whoopee.
― libcrypt, Monday, 6 August 2007 04:12 (eighteen years ago)
there's actually a section in my lease specifically prohibiting waterbeds!
who the hell buys a waterbed? besides hooker-motel owners.
― get bent, Monday, 6 August 2007 04:13 (eighteen years ago)
ok that libcrypt post gives me the heebie jeebies.
My best friend in high school had a waterbed, it was horrible, I dont know why the hell she had the thing. Every time she sat down next to me on the bed I'd go flying onto the floor cause her bed wasn't filled properly and she was a fatty.
― Trayce, Monday, 6 August 2007 04:14 (eighteen years ago)
one of my cousins had one but probably the last time I went up to her room to play NES on thanksgiving was 15 years ago
― A B C, Monday, 6 August 2007 04:15 (eighteen years ago)
Two months ago. My partner's mother has one.
― moley, Monday, 6 August 2007 04:15 (eighteen years ago)
The funny thing is, now I am thinking about waterbeds and it reminds me of the Smiths. Stupid high school friend.
― Trayce, Monday, 6 August 2007 04:16 (eighteen years ago)
my friend hugh's brother wes had one. he also had a punching bag hanging from the ceiling of his room. he lived in the basement. next to the garage. the garage usually had a deer hanging from the ceiling. with a bucket underneath the head. to catch the blood. i'm making it sound worse than it was.
― scott seward, Monday, 6 August 2007 04:16 (eighteen years ago)

― A B C, Monday, 6 August 2007 04:24 (eighteen years ago)

Ten years ago. Watching my friend run a hose from the outside tap through his screen window to fill it up. Then he spent the rest of the afternoon showing me this game called Lara Croft while made waves hit the corner.

is the aerobed for everyday use or just a super fancy guest inflatomatress
― A B C, Monday, 6 August 2007 05:20 (eighteen years ago)
i'm going to try it out for everyday use because i don't really want to buy some big expensive bed that i'll have to worry about moving. (i didn't bring any of my furniture out to l.a. with me and i'd like to travel light until my life gets a little more stable, you know?)
― get bent, Monday, 6 August 2007 05:31 (eighteen years ago)
i'm done with futons too. they kill my back.
― get bent, Monday, 6 August 2007 05:32 (eighteen years ago)
i wanna say superbowl 199..5?? around whenever the first TALKIN FOOTBALL videogame came out for the sega genesis. i cant remember.
though coming to think of it i think a kid i hung out with around '96 or so had a waterbed along with an either (in retrospect) really awesomely or creepily scarface-like gold & black themed bedroom.
― deeznuts, Monday, 6 August 2007 06:00 (eighteen years ago)
I have never been able to think of a single good reason to own a futon.
― Bimble, Monday, 6 August 2007 06:36 (eighteen years ago)
Your mom?
I don't think I have ever seen one, they always seemed to be more prevalent in Americans (where the pervs live... just kidding). Aren't they really comfortable once you get the hang of it? They sort of scare me, cause of the funny splish splashy sounds it makes. I mean, shit, I know it has water in it. But I would expect having Leo Caprio not saving you on the Titanic nightmares if I would get a waterbed. Not something I look forward to.
Futons also suck. My parents have'em and boy did I dislike'em when I was staying with'em in Tokyo.
― nathalie, Monday, 6 August 2007 07:47 (eighteen years ago)
My groovy pretend uncle and aunt had one (by which I mean they weren't really my uncle and aunt but we called them that - they were my parents friends). They also had a great record collection. The bedroom was classic white g-plan plus shagpile carpeting. I thought it was fantastic and probably still would.
The guy from the British Waterbed Compnay was on the radio a few months ago saying there was a lot of interest in waterbeds and especially mudbeds which are more stable apparently.
― Ned Trifle II, Monday, 6 August 2007 08:05 (eighteen years ago)
And of course who could forget Reg Holdsworth's waterbed in Coronation Street in 1993? Oh the hilarity.
― Ned Trifle II, Monday, 6 August 2007 08:17 (eighteen years ago)
We stayed at a friends house in Seaton, Devon once. They went out to work, but said about "their waterbed", and said without specifying why, that we should 'try it if we liked'. However, D got a bit shy of using someone elses bed and nervous about 'getting on' it (ref that Steptoe and Son episode), so we never did.
They had a nice bath though.

My firstborn son was conceived on a waterbed. I hated it, though. My SO was much bigger than me, so all night long I slid into the big Marianna Trench his weight created in the bed.

waterbeds are horrifying
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 7 August 2007 00:32 (eighteen years ago)
The MUDBED waterbed is not filled with mud, but is a very stable waterbed. Given the lack of motion and the perceived health benefits of mud, the name MUDBED seemed an appropriate name as we dream about our beauty sleep.
hahaha!

From age 12 to 18, I had one much like that bottom picture, with drawers underneath and a shelf along the side. Got it when my little brother/new roommate was born. (I had to give up my queen-sized bed to save space and my parents thought a twin-sized waterbed was a fair trade. Not that that thing took up any less room...) I don't know that I could sleep on it now, but it was pretty cozy on frigid Wisconsin nights.

when i was a kid, we had some friends who lived in squamish and occassionally we'd all go up there and visit and stay over for weekends. they had one of these late 60s two-storey houses with dark wood paneling halfway up all the walls and heavy carpets and a huge rec room and a bathroom with two sinks, and the whole place always seemed slightly damp. that's the west coast for you though.
they had a queen-size waterbed in a dark wood frame in one of the bedrooms - i always seemed to end up there, sharing with my brother, who of course made a big deal out of "waterbed! waterbed!" like it was some kind of ride. and it kind of was, because it never stopped moving. it's possible that there are "good" solid waterbeds, but this one was too soft and too warm and in the morning i would wake up to find myself covered in a thin layer of sweat, the bottom sheet untucked and half my face and body stuck to the thick plastic, the muffled blorps and gulps of air bubbles in water echoing like a soundtrack to a banal yet menacing nightmare.
i feel like i've sat on a waterbed more recently than that though, but have obv half deleted the memory.
― rrrobyn, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 00:56 (eighteen years ago)
xpost yeah, i can see how a waterbed might possibly be good in cold, dry climates
― rrrobyn, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 00:57 (eighteen years ago)
wait what am i saying - waterbeds are just bizarre
i don't mind futons, but i slept on futons from, like, the age of 10 until two years ago when i got a real mattress. yes, a REAL mattress b/c damn i don't care how much foam and special materials you put in a futon, it is still no match for a quality mattress
― rrrobyn, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 01:24 (eighteen years ago)
There was (still is) a shop that sold them on a street where I used to live. I can't imagine why anyone would by a bed from that location, and over time the depression in the middle display bed in the window became more pronounced and the lone salesman's face grew increasingly more despondant.
So I guess I associate waterbeds with depression and entropy.
