Are you an anxious person? What are most anxious about?

I'm a pretty committed nail-biter, and I'm most anxious about trying to be a Good Person, especially in the eyes of my parents - certified do-gooders. I feel guilty a lot, like I need to do more to help others.

Youuuu?

This, of course, was the logical alternative to the Toast thread I was going to start.

I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder which means I've anxious about pretty much everything. Thankfully meds keep it under control and it's much better these days. Unfortunately, I tend to worry most about things over which I have absolutely no control.

i have debilitating anxiety
omnipresent
i have spent years trying to "solve" my anxiety with logic, articulating its effect on me and my life in many many different ways, only to come to the conclusion that its very nature is irrational and defies logic

toast, however, gives me zero anxiety

the sir weeze, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

mmmm, toast

the sir weeze, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

money! lack of it that is.
especially around rent time

carne asada, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 18:59 (eighteen years ago)

life. period.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

I tell people I'm anxious about money, but honestly, the only things that affect my ability to sleep like a log are work deadlines.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

Work (ability to do said work). And as a result I'm almost as anxious about money and health care coverage.

j.lu, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

I've successfully misplaced ALL of my anxiety about everything onto BOYS. It makes everything a lot easier.

Oh, and the band. Having a focused thing to be anxious about makes it easier to get on with the rest of your life.

Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 12:05 (eighteen years ago)

I'm pretty laid-back... probably could stand to be a good bit more anxious, actually. I dunno. I used to be very insecure and anxious about other people's opinions of me but now I don't really think about them (this is not entirely true but it's close enough).

bernard snowy, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 12:11 (eighteen years ago)

No, kind of the opposite really. I don't really worry about things - chances are I'll look back in later life and gone "god I wish I'd been more anxious about x or y" but until then, no.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 12:13 (eighteen years ago)

I live with a kind of free-floating anxiety that attaches itself to different things at different times. Currently I'm worried about:
-my health
-where I'm going to board the dogs in November when we go to Rome
-how I'm going to manage for five days in Amsterdam in September without Mister M
-the new kittens
-the fact that I'm not getting any work done today

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 12:31 (eighteen years ago)

What trish said minus trips. Social interaction causes me the most anxiety. Otherwise it's pretty free-flowing and generalized. I've taken various long term medicines for this that don't really help. Currently I take a very small dose of prozac daily which is supposed to help (can't tell really) and klonipin as needed which helps oh so wonderfully.

If I'm anxious about a very specific event/situation I'm usually able to cope. it's the non-specific kind that wrecks me.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 12:42 (eighteen years ago)

all three of my yoga teachers have been on vacation for the past couple weeks and won't be back until september - hate the replacements (they are teaching exercise not yoga), can't afford to go to classes not at y - have been doing a bit on my own but still need concentration provided through classes - have been ill, not playing enough music, not doing enough work - anxiety levels totally increased

i'm not sure that i'm an anxious person though, in any unusual way
am mostly anxious abt "producing" things (which causes mind to not live in moment and move away from actual doing of things), b/c fuck proving yrself to the world yet i live in it and think abt it and am working (in however small ways) to change it

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 13:13 (eighteen years ago)

Ah, I'm going to restart yoga as soon as my student status kicks in a couple of weeks. Can't wait. This is fantastic for relaxing.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 13:14 (eighteen years ago)

I empathise too much, which isn't really empathy at all, but a projection of my fears and worries onto someone else. So I convince myself that X *must* be thinking in a certain way, just because I might in their position, and inevitably these thoughts will be negative about me. Gah.

Sometimes I feel exactly like this little guy: worried, helpless and somewhat homely. Like esp. esp. for the past two weeks:

Dirty Vicar's house! Problem solved!

I was extremely anxious during the nearly floods.

PJ Miller, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 17:23 (eighteen years ago)

Lately I've been getting so flipped out I have a hard time using the phone & basic things like that. :(

Abbott, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

I cut off my cell phone this weekend and I'm not sure I will get another. We have no landline phone. I'm not sure though if I can operate in the grown-up world of banks and such without a phonenumber.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 17:26 (eighteen years ago)

I did it for 18 months...didn't get a phone until about three weeks ago (and now I'm too intimidated by the world to use it, haha). It's mostly pretty crappy and unrewarding, unless you like driving places to talk to companies/people in person & wait in line & such.

Abbott, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

chances are I'll look back in later life and gone "god I wish I'd been more anxious about x or y"

why on earth might you do that?

i get pretty anxious about a lot of stuff esp. travelling which sucks because it's something i really want to do more of. i can't really relax or sleep on any moving transport and can get a bit panicky even when stuck in traffic or unscheduled, prolonged delays. a lot of it is to do with being stuck with people you don't know altho there's a fear of embarassing yourself or your friends too by freaking out. i never do actually freak out tho. often avoid lifts or any confined space for same reason.

i read about that Eurostar breaking down in the Channel tunnel for a couple of hours last week and that's the kind of thing I dread even tho there's no real danger, it's just a matter of tolerating an undesirable ordeal.

need to see someone about it, hypnotherapy or something cos it is holding me back somewhat.

Jesus, really? Oh jesus. That would terrify me.

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

When I went through a period of ridiculous stress in 2004 (work and domestic), I had compulsive thoughts along the lines of 'What would happen if I freaked out now?' when I was in highly pressured situations. I never did actually freak out, and it faded away quite quickly.

I'm anxious over this library in Chicago hiring me (I'm trying to relocate there from Missouri). Had a great interview...almost FIVE WEEKS ago. I've called and I've emailed, they are still interviewing, they will let me know when they make a decision. I've already gotten one month's extension on my lease, I really don't want to have to find another place in this town.

I've got MS, that creates a little anxiety in my life.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

Good luck with the library! I'm waiting on a few places to get to back to me right now as well.

Virginia Plain, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

So nerve-wracking. Good luck to you, as well.
