Damn it's hot. And office A/C is cutting out.

Dickerson Pike, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

Yay Southern thread!

The deluge has finally ended, we've been in the 90s all week and are expected to hit the century mark this weekend.

Welcome Texas summer.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

For realz? Your AC is on the fritz?

IT IS TOO HOT HERE

IT MAKES ME CRABBY.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

On the second of four expected 100+ days, and it's SOUPY hot.

Hell it only got down to 82 at night. No end in sight! Glad I moved back.

Molly and I were at the Williamson County fair last night. There was a pageant for little girls. Apparently they have one every night. Everyone's a winner!

Dickerson Pike, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

Stupid hot. If I have to cut on my A/C on the 10 minute morning drive to work, it's too goddam hot.

will, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

HIGH OF 103 TODAY

SOMEONE KILL ME PLZ

Yes. Someone got the "Judge's Choice" award. I have no idea what that means, but that little girl was not taking off her tiara.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, a/c is going in and out. Dark muttered "jokes" about how this is a "L.E.A.N. event."

("L.E.A.N. event" = corporate buzzword mumbojumbo about systematic "efficiency improvement" cost-cutting. I have no idea what it stands for.)

Dickerson Pike, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

I am sad I missed the Mule Show, though!

Also, when is it time to go see TEH DIRT TRACK?

xpost Employees will not be efficient if they are broiling inside office.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

Characteristics of last night's "Judge's Choice" winner:

1. Significantly older than other competitors-- probably old enough to know better

2. Right at the "ugly age"-- crazy teeth, awful glasses

3. Spoke in bizarre, affectless monotone

Dickerson Pike, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, poor thing was really awkward.

You did not answer question re: dirt track. BRING ON THE SPRINT CARS PLZ.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

oh man it's been so long since I've been to a dirt track race

milo z, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

Surely not Williamson County TX?

Our AC is working beautifully fortunately *knocks on wood*

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

Nope, Williamson Co., TN (aka the richest county in TN, which made the whole thing less gritty, and therefore less desirable)

milo, i LOVE the dirt track! Give me school bus races, figure 8s, four bangers, super modifieds, and Run What You Brung. However, sprint cars are def. my favorite.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

Milan, Tennesse. Pronounced "MY-lin."

Dickerson Pike, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

where is Atwood, TN?

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

this is all i need to see:

SAT. AUGUST 18TH

IT'S GONNA BE WILD!!!!!

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

Google maps claims it's 2hours and 25 minutes. That can't be! It's not 2 hours to Jackson, is it?

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

I'm in N.C. and everyone here is complaining about the heat. It's only 92F!!

wanko ergo sum, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

oh man, I hope there is a little girl pageant when I go to my local county fair.

I know there is a county fair thread on ILE somewhere, I should go find it.

tokyo rosemary, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

State Fair of Texas! Must go this year. . .Any Texans (Okies, Arkies) planning a trip to Dallas?

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

There was a pageant for the ladies too! They looked like drag queens.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

I am REALLY hoping for a little girls and their sheep pageant.

tokyo rosemary, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

Awwh! That would be the best! As I was eating my corndog, I noticed a stage full of tiny little bluegrass musicians (i.e. kids). They were so cute and off-key!

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

our new air conditioning was worth every penny of the 6K we paid for it. i look at 7 day forecasts in the triple digits and laugh now.

sunny successor, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

mapquest always over-estimates travel time: Mem -> Jxn = 1:20 (really less than an hour); Mem -> N'ville = 3:15 (really 2:45, tops)

will, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

Do you laugh at the electric bill? (xpost)

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

well they raised electricity by half this year and still our last one was lower than this time last year (is that right, pp?). so YES.

sunny successor, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

energy efficient units, you see

sunny successor, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

Our bill has been avg between 120-140 a mth so far. That might change as we hit triple digits.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 15:26 (eighteen years ago)

sunny, our new AC unit is great on energy efficiency too! I just opened the elecric bill, and said, "is that all!?"

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

Our next one might hurt a bit. The last one was $225, which is a bit lower than last year, even with TVA rate increases over the winter. But I'm not cooling the detached office anymore...

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

we shut the doors to the den which isn't hooked up to the main system and the bathroom. Which I kind of hate b/c I don't like peeing in extreme heat.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

wow. the only place our old system really worked was in the bathroom. with three cats, a dog and two people it sure got crowded in there. im not sure how much our bill is or was. pp is my personal accountant. if money matters were left to me we'd be destitute.

in other news, i was at an intersection in the river market (little rock) yesterday afternoon when tommy lee's tour bus did a slow turn in front my car. i caught myself simultaneously sitting up straighter, pushing my shoulders back and fluffing my hair . what a groupie ho.

sunny successor, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

How did you know it was his? Did he have his name emblazoned on it?

our bathrooms have no AC vents so that's why we shut the doors.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

I once had a heating bill in Buffalo of $292. Mind you, that was during a remarkably awful February, even though we kept it at around 62 degrees. Also, our 11 foot ceilings and poorly insulated walls didn't help much.

I don't know what's worse: freezing for a month or sweating one's ass off.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

freezing. You can always pile on more clothes, blankets.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

xp: no name but it was clearly a tour bus and it was pulling into the venue he played at last night.

that or i was foxing myself up for a bunch of old ladies on a state capital tour.

sunny successor, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

it's too fucking hot. it's going to be 100+ for the rest of the week, with no hope in sight. leaving my house = pain.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 13 August 2007 00:14 (eighteen years ago)

Does NM count as the South or are we just talking the SE? Because that's what I think of as "the South" (ie the one that will rise again), but I'm all about talking about the heat.

Abbott, Monday, 13 August 2007 00:31 (eighteen years ago)

I can't tell if my swamp cooler is working or not. I think it might not be. It's not so hot that I'm sweat factory just by sitting around. But the vents are not spitting out air, either. It took me a week in May to figure out it wasn't working after not using it since last October.

I'm pretty sure it's not working, but I don't want to actually call my landlady about it until I get some weird financial stuff straightened out with her first.

Abbott, Monday, 13 August 2007 00:34 (eighteen years ago)

I can't walk my dog until twilight, like 8:30 p.m., so his little feet don't bake and make him die. :(

Abbott, Monday, 13 August 2007 00:38 (eighteen years ago)

Abbott, SE, SW, whatever. South = stupid heat

My frail constitution can't handle it. I talked to my mom today and she was all, "Oh! It was only a high of 75 today! It's 68 right now!" I almost started crying.

Last week, after sitting outside in 95+ heat and drinking beer, then going to sweaty art gallery, followed by eating sushi in a restaurant with busted AC, I got really sick (i.e. vomfest).

Well, thinking about it, I didn't make the best choices, now did I?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 18 October 2007 20:39 (eighteen years ago)

our weather radios aren't going off here, but we're under (like most of the south) a tornado warning until 11pm.

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 18 October 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

Today we had a high of 98 and a low of 50.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 18 October 2007 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

Oh dear god.

That's freakish!

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 18 October 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

Southern hints from Heloise: sriracha + cider vinegar = perfect pepper sauce for greens or peas if you're out of the traditional stuff. I discovered that one tonight.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

What the hell does HONEY, DON'T GO BACK ON YOUR RAISIN mean?

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 1 November 2007 01:09 (eighteen years ago)

It parses as "don't deny your upbringing."

Not that Accuweather is ever right, but they're calling for snow and rain two weeks from now!

Dickerson Pike, Thursday, 1 November 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

OH GOD THE GROCERY STORES

I'm going to go now to avoid the nonsense.

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 1 November 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

You say that every time, but no you're not.

Kerm, Thursday, 1 November 2007 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

"Honey, don't go back on your raisin' " - Language: Rural Southern, poss. hill dialect; Most Likely Ancestry - Scots-Irish

Translated:
Honey - Endearment, used for people too close to be called "Hey you" but too distant for "Sugar," "Baby," "Sweetie" or "Hon."

Don't go back on - Don't reject, don't deny, don't renege. As in "Don't go back on your word, now," meaning don't change your mind, don't reverse yourself.

Your raisin' - Your raising. Your childhood teachings. Your moral foundation. Your upbringing. "Where you're from," in a philosophical, psychological sense.

Used in a non-Southern context: "You know Jenny ain't back in the 'hood. She done gone back on her raisin'."

Thank you, thank you. I'll be here all week. Just throw chocolate.

*bow*

last night, local news reported that some kid tried to hijack a plane and crash it into the cajun dome during a hannah montana concert.

the newspaper says this is no longer the case.

Nashville area media have reported that the teen intended to crash or divert the plane to Lafayette, La., where Franklin resident Miley Cyrus had a concert scheduled. Bolds said he was unaware of any connection to the “Hannah Montana” performance.

The Hannah Montana concert in Louisiana is actually scheduled Friday, not Tuesday, the day of the teen’s flight.

Ai Lien, Monday, 14 July 2008 21:19 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, it feels great today w/29% humidity. And NOAA says it's down to 59 tonight! I may actually sit outside to have my coffee tomorrow morning.

But the city hasn't run their mosquito-spraying truck this year, fuel prices probly, and we had a wet spring so there's skeeters out there big enough to fuck a turkey, as my crazy aunt would say.

Rock Hardy, Monday, 14 July 2008 21:33 (seventeen years ago)

So, the city where Sarah goes to college is about 35 miles away, right? The storm system that killed a bunch of people in Yazoo City threaded the needle and went between our town and hers.

Hate this low-grade terror that lasts five months out of every twelve.

seriously its like this continual terror that you get used to so quick and then you talk some yankees and mention youre under a tornado watch when they ask about the weather and the way they react makes you remember just how fucked up it is.

but yeah, since ive been here i dont recall hearing of some many people getting killed by tornados in one storm system. im glad youre all okay.

When I went to Florida on family vacation the first time, I was terrified of sharks -- not because they might eat me, because for some reason that seemed beyond the realm of possibility, but that their often-shed teeth would be in the sandy ocean floor, and I'd step on one and cut myself.

When we got back to Michigan and went to the beach, I was pretty trepidatious of that sand too.
