Anyone here still using dial-up?

I know a surprising number of people who still sit there waiting 47 seconds for a tiny .gif to load.

Woha, I don't know anyone who has dial-up anymore. The other day some client asked me something and I said I hadn't checked the gold rate (or something). He replied:"Well, of course, you don't have internet. You don't have a website." I just did my "?" face.

I miss that sound though. Y'know, when you logged on.

A friend of mine is still using dial-up, but he's the only person I know doing as such. I think he uses freenet or something. He doesn't really use the internet though. I don't know which part baffles me more.

My dad still has dial-up to save about $12 a month, which he could well afford to invest in internet. And my pal Fred is still running dial-up on some unixy 486...he's one of those people.

My brother is still using dial up in France on an ancient computer, as part of his grudging 'I don't really believe in computers' outlook on life.

I use dial-up at home. I don't have cable either.

I, frankly, barely understand how phonographs work.

OMG, I didn't even remember you needed one for dial-up.

I guess it's obvious that I don't anymore, then. (does GPRS/UMTS count as dialup? then yes)

I use EDGE

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 9 August 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

my new phone doesn't do EDGE ( it's a SE k810i ) , but then neither does my provider.

StanM, Thursday, 9 August 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

I have heard of EDGE but had to look it up. I R MORON. Stan, here only Base does it? Or does Proximus as well? And how much does it cost anyway?

why use dial up when you can steal other people's wireless connections?

homosexual II, Thursday, 9 August 2007 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

so slow though

Ms Misery, Thursday, 9 August 2007 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

I still use dialup. I am a poor excuse for a human being.

Aimless, Thursday, 9 August 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

Hi, me too.

marmotwolof, Thursday, 9 August 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

Nathalie: I don't know how much EDGE costs, only that Proximus doesn't do it. Only GPRS and UMTS. For someone like me who tends to surf and check mail way too much, it usually costs between 70 and (maximum, extremely heavy surfing) 100 € a month (don't really call much, that's mostly surfing + sms).

At least, that was when I only had GPRS. I'm a little afraid of how much it's going to be now it's way faster, since I only have that UMTS-capable phone since last week

I deal with a lot of ranchers who still use dialup -- Marlboro Man types who work from dawn til bedtime and don't have time for the internet. It's a lot of fun emailing them proofs of their ads and helping them figure out how to open a PDF.

"That's right, doubleclick it good."

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 9 August 2007 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

i am still on dialup at home and today i seem to be connexted at 28K rather than the usual 48. speeds have been terrible lately and it spends a lot of time sending no traffic between me and the server for no apparent reason. line keeps getting dropped too.

a more suspicious me would think it's my isp trying to ditch it's dialup customers.

koogs, Thursday, 9 August 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

There are many places in Australia that still use dialup because there isnt anything else. Even in some big cities like perth. ADSL isnt as pervasive as it should be. Our national telco is a whore.

Trayce, Thursday, 9 August 2007 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

Trayce, you should try Ireland some time!
