"Many Americans, mostly children, find the name of the lake to be humorous, because it bears resemblance to a contraction of the words "titty" and "caca". "Titty" is a slang term for breast and "caca" is a childish term for excrement. Therefore, teaching this geographical feature to children in school can be trying at times."

Many Americans, mostly children, find the name of the lake to be humorous
I watched the movie version of Chariots Of The Gods when I was a kid and still remembered the Lake Titicaca sequence ("how could the ancient Maya know that Lake Titicaca was in the shape of a puma attacking a rabbit - they must have had SPACESHIPS!")
Didn't give a shit about the double entendre name. Still don't now.

Best name for a lake, EVER.

It is the best place ever! I once took a boat to an island in the middle of it and stayed with a family there for a couple of days. The island was a mountain top coming out of the lake (said to be one of the deepest in the world - they've never found the bottom, supposedly). Shepherd men would walk along the path herding sheep while knitting and walking at the same time. I had the most delicious quinoa dish there. We played soccer with the kids there.

Indulge Experience Lake Titicaca, Inkaterra-style… on a secluded private peninsula.
Inkaterra, Peru’s nature travel pioneer, presents Titilaka, a luxury refuge designed in homage to the ancient Titicaca, featuring:
Sumptuous lake view suites. Intimate fireside dining. Wraparound terraces. Heated outdoor pool. A serene setting, surrounded by incomparably blue waters, graced with dramatic dawns and spectacular sunsets. All inclusive experiences - from the contemplative to the adventuresome, for a completely authentic connection with Titicaca’s natural, historical and cultural essence.

I have been there! The Isla de la Sol is stunning. I stayed in Copacabana, on the shores of the lake, and saw lots of this sort of thing:

People bring their cars and trucks there to be blessed, so they decorate them, get really drunk, smash wine/beer/chicha bottles on them, and have priests say blessings on the vehicles. It's very weird. Apparently it's mostly done by people who are going to drive up and down the "road of death" into the Yungas from the Altiplano.

also, we rode there on a bus from La Paz, and at one point you have to cross a river. There's no bridge b/c Bololvia, so you (and the bus) have to ride a ferry. It's not a big river, but there you go. The great part is that the Bolivian navy monitors the river crossing. It's great b/c Bolivia is landlocked. I guess they patrol the lake too, which at least has an international border.

Lake Titicaca absolute classic lake, because it proves the ignorance of minor 80s indie people Martin Stephenson and the Daintees, who sang "You can't get a boat to Bolivia." Oh yes you can.
