March: Classic Or Dud?

I realised last year that if it wasn't for having a birthday in it I would really hate March. But today the sun is shining and I am forced to revise this view. Good old March!

Tom, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

31 days too so if you're a March fan you get plenty of it! I like how the calendar people realised early doors February would be shit and made it shorter, as if to acknowledge the poorness of the whole idea.

Tom, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the battle of spring vs. winter.

jel --, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why would you hate it Tom? It is always rather blustery but otherwise pretty good especially the chocolate eggs bit. My dad's birthday is March too as is my parents' wedding anniversary - Pearl on Monday! Blimey!

Emma, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Come on, it pisses all over February anyway.

N., Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But Emma the chocolate eggs bit gets swiped by April quite often. I think I would hate it because it raises expectations of being Spring but generally in Britain at least these expectations are thwarted and it's as miserable and cold as the two previous months.

Tom, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's better than the hellhole that is Feb and my new job starts in it so I say classic.

RickyT, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But obviously February is despicable and the worst month so saying March is better than it is not a great argument really.

Tom, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes Tom but they are still SELLING the chocolate eggs in shops in March even if your so-called 'Easter' is in April.

Emma, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

March has never really been a good month for me.

Julius Caeser, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

there only are 12 months tom, this is not a continuum deal

MAD MARCH HARES!! I haf nevah seen one despite my rural boyhood.

mark s, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But Emma they've been selling the chocolate eggs in February too. And what kind of greedbeast are you to guzzle all your Easter eggs before Easter?

Tom, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No Mark - February = 12th best month by universal acclaim. So if March is better than February it still might be the 11th best i.e. pretty dud really.

Tom, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You have seen me eating Tom so you know what type of greedbeast I am. Also being Jewish(ish) I enjoy mocking your Christian festivals by eating the chocolate eggs early.

Emma, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm with Tom in that birthday in March = validation for the month in general. Hurrah!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I had never thought of it that way. I always thought it was cool having a birthday in May cos it's a good month but it's a good month anyway so if I had a birthday in a rubbish month e.g. November it would be sharing the good month wealth more evenly. Hmmm.

Emma, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

When I talk to Isabel this evening I will find out if her rabbit is behaving oddly. It's not a hare but they're related so you never know.

Tom, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But March's following on from February means that the relief I get from it starting elevates its simple not-Februaryness to classic status. Ask me again on the 15th and I might be a little less positive.

RickyT, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Emma, have you really never had that thought before? This kind of thinking runs through my whole life and may well have started at a very young age with me deciding that it wouldn't be good to have your birthday at Christmas time.

N., Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, having your birthday within 2 weeks of christmas sucks

chris, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but surely, JULY is the most god-forsaken horror of a month?

jel --, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Spring is here, spring is here, life is skittles and life is beer!

misterjones, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but surely, JULY is the most god-forsaken horror of a month?

GOTH

N., Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have given up thinking about anything that is not: food & drink; discos; clothes; sex. Thinking about what is the best / worst month all the time is terribly rockist.

Emma, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

March is classic because one of my best friends from high school has his birthday in it. Actually, it's today. Maybe I'll try to find his number and call him...

Dan Perry, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thinking about what is the best / worst month all the time is terribly rockist.

I think you're confusing rockism with mental illness.

N., Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's classic because of my Birthday and also because of Paddys Day. This Paddys Day will be especially classic due to Fatboy Slim, Jon Carter, and Dave Clarke playing Saturday Sunday Monday in Dublin. Classically expensive also however.

Ronan, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

February is best month. Days get noticeably longer, sun starts to feel warm, plants start to bloom. Only 28 days between getting paid.Promise of spring and summer is tantalisling near. Summer months rock too but usually always disappointed by how crap our summer's are and the lurking thought 'is that it' as autumn crashes into view.

Billy Dods, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

February is classic compared to the HORROR of November.

Robin Carmody, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But I thought April was the cruellest month?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah but that's good ned

mark s, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My birthday is right at the start of April (the second if you want to get me a present heh heh) so I hate March because it takes too long and delays my birthday. If we got rid of it, then it'd be my birthday tomorrow!

James Ward, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

we aim very much to ensure the pristineness of april's reputation for cruelty jamesmichaelward => no present no or evah

mark s, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, James, but it is *my* birthday tomorrow, so wait your turn. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

December is the cruelest month, so says Mike Scott. He should know, as he knows a thing or two about inflicting pain and suffering on people.

Billy Dods, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

there will be 8-10 inches of snow tomorrow..so early March is looking shite this year

kevin enas, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's my magical birthing day in April too!

jel --, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Unlike Kevin I like early March snow. We had some last year, and it was beautiful.

Robin Carmody, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Another March birthday, ahoy.

Kim, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My birthday's also in March. In 19 days, in fact.

Never gave much thought to whether or not I like March. I guess it's OK 'cause it was Spring Break month, but I was always too lame and/or poor to do Spring Break when in school so that didn't mean much of anything.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

March is alright! It's easy to say, it's better than February and it's also the month of my birth. Last year my birthday was on 03.02.01. That was pretty funny, but in the UK my birthday was on 02.03.01. So it wasn't as funny over there.

Andy K, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lousy Smarch weather!

electric sound of jim, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

March is good in Cheltenham cos it's GOLD CUP and most of ireland descends on the town, and you have an excuse to a. buy the sporting life b. go out all the time, just in case you bump into someone who gives you a "hot tip" (of the betting kind) c. wander around watching very drunk ppl fall over lots.

this is first year in ten i shall not be there, due to last year's being cancelled for f&m :(

CarsmileSteve, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But the Sporting Life closed four years ago ... :).

Horse Racing Anorak, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
I just hit the Random button and this was the first thread to come up... SPOOKY. So, revive!

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 11:44 (twenty years ago)

When was the last time it snowed in March? Does the snow make it classicker or dudder? I wd rather sunshine and daffs personally, but that may be because I'm not wearing appropriate shoes for snow today.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

CLASSIC FOR IT IS MY BDAY THIS MONTH HURRAH!

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

I bet it snows *every* March

I am surprised that noone upthread seems to have made any "It's OK, but I prefer Ely" jokes.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

It has been sunny and gorgeous here - it was 30+ degrees C on the first of March! Now, a pleasant mid 20s, sunshine and cool breezes.

Gawrbless Oz =)

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

I still hate July.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

it's my HALF-birthday in march! plus i get a week off from school and it starts to get a little bit warm near the end...so classic!

joseph (joseph), Thursday, 3 March 2005 07:13 (twenty years ago)

great so far

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 3 March 2005 10:07 (twenty years ago)

March is good for one reason, my birthday.
It’s a little weird this year as I share a house with 2 others that have recently moved in & all our birthday’s are in March; even weirder is the fact that they fall on the 26th, 27th & the 29th.

Should be a good weekend.

lucifer, Thursday, 3 March 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

Party at yours.

March is normally a dud precisely because of my birthday. This wasn't always the case. Right now, I'm temping but for who knows how long. There's always someone I need to call, I'm broke and can't move out of the living room and I consider being a full time African daily.
