And on what, if any, flights/carriers can you still do this?

Mine would be on a flight from Heathrow to JFK in 1992. Fun rebel back-of-the-DC9 smoking on the flight back from a highschool trip to Italy and Greece.

i dunno if u can do this at all anymore - i don't think so. my only memory is flying in '95 with my mom to Lebanon. she had to switch seats with someone in the smoking area to smoke. why do i feel like i've posted about this before. anyway yeah.

I totally miss the days when you smelled like absolute fucking Pall Mall hell stepping off a 45 minute peanuts-only connector. Anyone who doesn't can suck it.

The Emirates flight I caught to the UK in 1997 had a smoking section.

I'm pretty sure you can still do this on Cuban airlines.

Tokyo to Beijing on Japan Airlines in 1998. The L.A. to Tokyo leg was no smoking, but the Tokyo to Beijing leg had a smoking section. I guess the Tokyo to Beijing flight catered more to business travelers. The whole airline went no smoking not too long after.
At the time I was a rather anxious flyer, so having a smoke really hit the spot. I no longer fear flying, nor do I smoke anymore.

April 2003, on an Air Europa flight in Spain. I'd never smoked on a plane before and didn't realise when checking in that there was a smoking section. I wanted to do it just once, and thankfully the flight was far from full so I just moved seats to have a smoke.

These days you can't even bring a lighter on.

Actually, I think they just changed that rule. Like, just last week.

1995, going from newark to heathrow.
i think you can still smoke on some of iberia air's flights. my friend's mother is at about 40 a day at this point and will only fly if she can go with them.

I've been flying since I was a baby but yet never remember the smoking section on planes. Weird. Even though I am a smoker, I can't even imagine it - it must have been so gross. The air in planes is already bad enough!
Also, I remeber reading something earlier this year about a man (German, maybe) who intends to open an airline marketed to smokers where it will be allowed throughout the whole plane on all flights.

The last time I smoked on a flight was on a flight back from New York in 1991. The flight was only about a third full and almost all the passengers were students coming home from their summer working in New York or Massachusetts. It was the nicest flight I ever had. I got to take a nap across the entire middle aisle of the plane, then wander back to swap seats with someone in the smoking section periodically for a smoke. I miss half-empty flights more than I miss smoking sections, though.

otm. And there's no reason anyone can't go a few hours with a smoke. Maybe if it's a crazy-long international flight or something... but even then, plan ahead. Bring powerful downers and sleep through the flight.
