2006 easily.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 12:45 (eighteen years ago)

on a personal level 2001 wins all, on a "things happening in the world" level probably not.

acrobat, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 12:49 (eighteen years ago)

2004 innit. That will probably never change. It had brilliance.

2005 was dogshit.
2006 was good in a blissful contented way but it never peaked.
2007 is much the same, perhaps better than 2006, so far, more eventful, but lacks a little something that 2004 had.

pre-2004:
2003 was total and utter balls.
2001,2002 were fuck knows i was a kid
2000 put your hands in the air

2007 so far has been the only decent odd-numbered year for me. but there's still several months for it to be shittified.

ken c, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 12:50 (eighteen years ago)

so far 2007 has been fairly tidy, compared to the last 6 years it's been a gold mine of happiness

Ste, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 12:53 (eighteen years ago)

it will be 2008

Just got offed, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 12:54 (eighteen years ago)

2000: disastrous
2001: better
2002: disastrous then great
2003: great
2004: mediocre with good patches
2005: fantastic then tailed off unexpectedly and disappointingly
2006: good but not good enough
2007: erratic

Filey Camp, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 12:56 (eighteen years ago)

2000: had its moments
2001: extreme highs and lows
2002: meh, nothing great
2003: UGH UGH UGH GO AWAY UGH UGH
2004: not bad
2005: had some crushingly shite things about it, but pretty good on the whole
2006: Hey, good year!
2007: not bad so far

ailsa, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 12:59 (eighteen years ago)

It must be 2006, since the Democrats have stood up to Bush so fiercely.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 13:08 (eighteen years ago)

personally: 2004 or 2001
globally: 2000? until november at least?

blueski, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 13:11 (eighteen years ago)

2000: good
2001: terrible
2002: not quite as terrible
2003: good things starting to happen
2004: surprising, exhausting, but wonderful
2005: solidly excellent
2006: solid
2007: started badly, but getting better. A bit of a rollercoaster.

2004 wins.

Dr.C, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 13:16 (eighteen years ago)

To be honest, I can't remember what happened in which year. My life has been pretty good this decade, no catastrophes but nothing that would make a particular year stand out either. I think I gotta choose 2003, because:

* I was still under 25, so no age crisis.
* I was still getting student support money, so I didn't have to work as much as today.
* I had the best flatmate ever.
* I had a regular sex partner for the whole year.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 13:17 (eighteen years ago)

globally: 2000? until november at least?

Oh yeah, things will change like magic TWO Novembers from now. And it don't rain in Indianapolis in the summertime.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 13:22 (eighteen years ago)

indianapolis sounds nice

ken c, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 13:25 (eighteen years ago)

Oh yeah, things will change like magic TWO Novembers from now. And it don't rain in Indianapolis in the summertime.

Hey don't tell me tell the scores of people in the media and on the street who were mortified by the result and the way it happened at the time.

blueski, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 13:27 (eighteen years ago)

scores of people in the media and on the street sound nice

ken c, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 13:29 (eighteen years ago)

You mean scoring people in the media and on the street?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 13:31 (eighteen years ago)

dan m, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 13:34 (eighteen years ago)

acrobat, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 13:36 (eighteen years ago)

2000 - lousy first few months with partner problems
2001 - recall work being woeful
2002 - don't remember anything special
2003 - don't remember anything special
2004 - don't remember anything special
2005 - christmas in nyc was pretty fab, otherwise shit
2006 - worst year ever apart from summer in nyc and xmas with mates
2007 - Fishing has been amazing. enjoying new photography hobby. been tasked with amazing huge art project this summer. nyc next week. some more photography projects planned. but lots of rain.

What does all this say?
That my memory is shit after about two years.

Ste, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 13:36 (eighteen years ago)

it's a shame but when i think '2002' the first thing that always comes to mind is Matt Holland equalising against Cameroon. FFS WHYY?!

blueski, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 13:41 (eighteen years ago)

2002 as I met my husband. HURRAH! The year after was disastrous (for our business). I sure as fuck hope that will not be repeated again.

nathalie, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 13:43 (eighteen years ago)

2007 has been best and worst by far. its like the year of confrontation.

sunny successor, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 13:45 (eighteen years ago)

blueski, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 14:04 (eighteen years ago)

January 5-January 8 - The 2000 al-Qaeda Summit - Good pastries. Could have laid on more sandwiches though.

acrobat, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

Doing it properly:

2000 - lovely and contented
2001 - exciting mad 'wtf is going to happen next?' rollercoaster
2002 - transitional, in a good way, kind of the foundations of everything that happened next
2003 - consolidation, a lot of fun in places, everything seemed to be leading up to
2004 - complete soap opera, ridiculous peaks and troughs
2005 - mostly sucked shit
2006 - best year ever, just kept getting better and better
2007 - kind of meh so far, but there's a lot to come

Matt DC, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 14:13 (eighteen years ago)

2000 - Madness
2001 - had its moments
2002 - pretty good, all things considered
2003 - some darkness, many compensations
2004-5 solidly good
2006-7 sketchy in places but brilliant in others

2006 wins cos got married innit

Matt, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

what was up with 05 mdc? lots of good things happened 05 i thought?

Filey Camp, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah a lot of good things happened sporadically in 05 but I don't look back on the year with any real fondness and it was outright horrible in large places. Conversely there were some bad times in 04 but I still look back on the year as a whole fondly.

The second half of 07 will beat the first half by a mile, I think.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

2007 hands down worst year yet

max, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

Nothing beats 2001 for WORST. YEAR. EVER. Except maybe 2004, that was pretty unrelentingly awful, too. 2003 was OK. I don't remember much of 2002, which is probably for the best, I think it was a good time at the time, but best forgotten. 2006 was the year I got on the radio, I got on the TV, my band played festivals and released singles, and even though it was a lot of madness at the time, it was pretty durn good in hindsight.

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

2000 good-ish
2001 ditto
2002 utterly awful
2003 ok, then rubbishy, then ok
2004 dud
2005 ditto
2006 first half=hellish; second half=awesomeness
2007 so far, so good!

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

2000 - Badly Drawn
2001 - Avalanche
2002 - Bright Lights
2003 - Darkness
2004 - Some Girls
2005 - Sway
2006 - Valentine
2007 - Cherryade

acrobat, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

man i have had the worst fuckin' decade. i'm sitting it out. the 00s are like the 80s, they're cursed.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

i voted 2003, but really years, a bit like days, have their ups and downs, and i suppose adding up the ups and the downs will be no more accurate than just going with instinct.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

2000 - Unstable
2001 - Boring, not awful
2002 - Really great!
2003 - Shite. Appauling. Apart from maybe one or two mitigating factors
2004 - The one I voted for. Lots going on. Loads of fun. Important changes in October. ILX was really fun back then too I remember.
2005 - Just damn tiring and mentally exhausting. I think I nearly had a breakdown in the summer so yeah, mostly dud.
2006 - Mega-highs, but some things sucked loads of balls. On the whole, I'd say pretty good.
2007 - Hard to tell. Things are unravelling nicely. I'd say this is the chill out year to be honest.

the next grozart, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

^^^^^^^this

2000 - good!
2001 - discovered masturbation
2002 - ok
2003 - meh, not very good at all, first real attempt at dating fails hilariously
2004 - pretty good, became me for the first time
2005 - very good, great even
2006 - discovered ILX, became meme for the first time
2007 - so far, so good, should get better soon

Just got offed, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

2008 - louis becomes a mememe for the first time ?

StanM, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

This thread is weird to me -- I don't use calendar years as life-quality yardsticks so much. I think more in terms of "the years I lived in X," then Y, then Z, etc.

The whole last decade has kinda sucked balls.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

2000: really fun and stupid
2001: even more fun and stupid
2002: uh oh
2003: oh shit
2004: worst year of my life
2005: recovery
2006: cool
2007: heyyyyyy!

Just got offed, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

Every year seems kind of mixed, really - although 2002 was definitely a low due to a lot of deaths (the one high point was that my daughter was born).

2000 - mostly decent, crap election
2001 - boring, followed by 9/11 awfulness
2002 - terrible (except for J's birth)
2003 - moved into a new house - pretty good
2004 - home with two kids, decent but hardly exciting
2005 - staying at home all the time with two kids leads to frustration and depression
2006 - applied to, got accepted to, and began nursing school program; ILX made me laugh a lot
2007 - maybe the best so far; school going exceptionally well, lots of new friends. Downside: I spend a lot of time trying to support a friend with a very soap-opera-like life, which I'm not very good at. (I NEED A SCRIPT, PEOPLE).

Overall, I preferred the 90s - and heck, the 80s - but 2008, 2009, and even 2010 could still be awesome.

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

2002 was the last palindrome we'll have in quite a while.

Abbott, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

I think if I'm writing about past years it should be in the style of an entertainment columnist.

Abbott, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

But do you really think 1836 can make a comeback?

blueski, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

2000: OK
2001: Not bad. Better than 2000.
2002: A medallion year. Easily better than 2001.
2003: Striking. A year better than all this millennium.
2004: Gold-plated. 2003 wished it was this good.
2005: Platinum. This year shines so bright it causes cataracts. Easily better than 2004.
2006: Diamond-brilliant. This year shines so brightly it melts a hole in 2005.
2007: The ZENITH! A year so profoundly spectacular that it defies description. Not quite as good as 2000, however.

libcrypt, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 04:35 (eighteen years ago)

2000: sucked (gym class)
2001: sucked (braces)
2002: BETTER (puberty at last)
2003: sucked (crippling depression)
2004: first half = WORST (crippling regret), second half = BEST

things have been great since then

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 04:39 (eighteen years ago)

2007 has been really rather bad for me which is a shame :( It had been shaping up to be amazing and lifechanging. Instead it's just been lifechanging and arsekicking :/

No other year rly stands out one way or the other though the last 4 years have been good kind and rewarding to me in a lot of ways.

Trayce, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 04:49 (eighteen years ago)

OTM

2001 - I was deathly depressed all year before 9-11, and then it happened and it kind of hollowed me out. I met my future wife late 2001, married her in 2002 but that year was so hectic (2 job changes, 2 moves, marriage, etc.) I couldn't enjoy it as such.
not ashamed to say the ILM 2004 Year End Singles Poll is like 50% of what made 2004 so boss.

Is anyone else here realizing they can't much remember anything about their pasts in distinct units of Gregorian years?

Abbott, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 05:22 (eighteen years ago)

2000: Yeh!
2001: Spent the tail end reforming an unarmed robber. Not so hot.
2002: Drinking, Good times, good times.
2003: Horrendo until August when I quit Evil Job.
2004: Awesome. Baby1 born.
2005: Got married. V Nice.
2006: Rockin'. Honeymoon & Baby2. This be the one I voting for.
2007: Shaping up for a whole lotta nuthin. Ahh! Relief.

Man, I definitely don't remember the answer to this question. Maybe 2006 when I started to get my life sorted.

Will M., Wednesday, 15 August 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

I'm barely 19 so haven't really "lived" in many of these years, but here's a try....

2000: so much happened, moved schools, spent 6 hours in boarding, am quite nostalgic about it, not the best year of my life though
2001: boring, this was the year I spent mainly studying... until I discovered ICQ and MSN in about the November I think...
2002: got quite exciting towards the end, quite boring in hindsight but at the time I probably had a ball. I had the best holiday of my life in this year.
2003: So so *so* boring, with short bursts of fun here and there, but mainly disappointment
2004: I started going out more with my friends, got my first job, I'm really nostalgic about this year because everything was still to take place...
2005: Went totally crazy in this year, it was rarely dull and I was like a different person. I would do anything to get this year back.
2006: The first part wasn't really that good, rather a big anticlimax. I wanted to achieve several things before school ended and never did. From May onwards was the time for this though.
2007: Quite dissatisfying so far. But now I have a safe job and good housemates to live with in September, so I guess it will get *a lot* better.

My life has been motoring along semi-peachy all decade, but consider this:
2000: George Bush elected
2004: George Bush FUCKING RE-ELECTED.
So some major suckiness on those years.
HOWEVER:
2006 Dems kick ass.

Beth Parker, Thursday, 16 August 2007 00:35 (eighteen years ago)

I still can't vote on this thread. Don't people just have good days and bad days? Is my scope too limited?

kenan, Thursday, 16 August 2007 00:36 (eighteen years ago)

2000 was the worst, 2001 was pretty good, 2002 sucked but wasn't that bad, 2003 was fun, 2004 ruled, 2005 was kinda alright but ruled somewhat, 2006 ruled, 2007 has ruled hard

iiiijjjj, Thursday, 16 August 2007 00:52 (eighteen years ago)

xpost to kenan: yeah, but you're supposed to think of it in terms of major events or whatever, for example:
my 2006 - first half was nightmarish hell of dealing with crazy crack-addict boyfriend who was trying to hide his crack addiction and selling crack. and all that that entailed. but i dumped him finally in july, and then the rest of the year was total awesomeness (big time bonding with best friend; moved into fantastically awesome house with the coolest ppl ever; rediscovered all the things i loved and forgotten about i.e. books and art; started meeting really cool, interesting, creative people - and avoiding meeting crack addicts).
