10 minutes in and it's already killing me.

"Hey, K-Fed! The little man in the boat? He's up here!"

"So, not only are you a cadaverous lay, you have shitty taste in movies."

"No, the asshole you're calling is gonna have to call you back. Yes sweetheart, sometime after the movie, all right?"

Plot Keywords:
Female Nudity / Sex

I like the sounds of this "plot" thing

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 03:57 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, it starts with him getting a blowjob from a nun, kinda.

marmotwolof, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 04:02 (eighteen years ago)

haha "near the vaganus!?"

milo z, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

this show is... ok. getting tired of all these 6 feet under style edgy soap operas.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

is this the one where boone from lost cs on ts?

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

No that's an HBO show coming (heh) in a few weeks, I think? I can't find the thread but it's called Tell Me You Love Me.

I never watched Six Feet Under regularly, so I guess I'm not jaded enough yet.

marmotwolof, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

This was terrible, cliched, awful -- it's basically "Dream On" minus the funny, no? Big respect to the Duchov, but he's dreadful in this.

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

All these shows are blurring together.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

mad men pretty disappointing too i thought.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

really lazily written (cell phone scene and when he tears apart the nice girl - they could have changed the cliches a little, right?), but reasonably funny when it's completely evil. I imagine Mulder-maturing/family stuff is going to suck mightily.

first series just finished airing in the UK; quite surprised (but then nothing about how out of step i am with ILX these days really surprises me any more, heh) there's no more comment about it here.

whatever. daft, sometimes joyously so. but fuck me, if anything EVER needed to be just one series, this was it.

grimly fiendish, Friday, 28 December 2007 01:43 (eighteen years ago)

This is my favourite new programme. Better than Heroes.

Season 1 was way better than the new season so far.

Reatards Unite, Sunday, 19 October 2008 21:02 (seventeen years ago)

I had assumed I felt the same way because I watched season 1 in a weekend on a lark, and didn't have to wait a week inbetween episodes. However last night's was much better than the rest of the season, so maybe you're right.

!

Watched the first half of season 1 this weekend. Liking it. Duchovny pulls off super-louche well.

Eazy, Monday, 25 May 2009 00:39 (sixteen years ago)

Derivative of Sideways, Entourage, etc., but, hey, I've seen those already.

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 13 August 2009 23:38 (sixteen years ago)

is this the programme about David Duchovny playing a sex addict? I find the idea of him having sex with anyone repuslive and incredible.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Friday, 14 August 2009 12:16 (sixteen years ago)

On account of his enormous head?

Tracer Hand, Friday, 14 August 2009 12:24 (sixteen years ago)

most of the way thru the 1st season; does this turn to shit like 6' under i.e. dark and unwatchable? I have a feeling it will do this.

Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Monday, 10 May 2010 22:08 (fifteen years ago)

turns sorta sappy actually, before swinging back to comic-book trashy, then back again. occasionally but rarely really good and actually hits the literary thing it shoots for.

s.clover, Monday, 10 May 2010 23:37 (fifteen years ago)

first season of this i really liked, thought it was pretty cute even, but the second was oddly enough horrible

sonderangerbot, Monday, 10 May 2010 23:46 (fifteen years ago)

thankin u. i looked @ the wiki breakdowns b cuz we got to the episode where mia steals the manuscript & hank gets carjacked and my mind is screaming "unwatchable" in a cartoon voice

Never watched seasons 2 & 3 and watched 2 of season 4 and man is it tone-deaf. Zoller Seitz OTM in this: http://www.salon.com/entertainment/tv/2011/01/10/californication_season_4/index.html

Stockhausen's Ekranoplan Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Friday, 21 January 2011 06:57 (fifteen years ago)

since tv shows decline pretty regularly, 'i checked in on the new season and i don't think i want to watch the ones i missed' seems a little funny. i thought 2 and 3 were watchable. calum rennie's rock producer in 2 is pretty good, and 3 has diane farr, embeth davidtz, and eva amurri (!).

so far in 4 they seem a little unsure why any of these people (except charlie) would want to be around hank anymore. a lot of the plot-related shenanigans are no longer tightly tied to the past, either, since apart from the legal troubles in 4 there's no longer anything about the whole 'fucking and punching' situation to hide (and so no tension about it). and charlie and marcie's life seems pretty well messed up too.

they've also gone through three or four major changes in hank's family so it's probably hard to re-set that convincingly—they can't just shuffle things between hank and karen around or send her to new york or anything.

this show is my guilty pleasure. though i much prefer the runkles & their travails to hank's douchey antics.

everybody funny ... now you funny too (Eisbaer), Sunday, 10 April 2011 04:11 (fourteen years ago)

Thought this was the worst season by far (your lovable douchebag is now a convicted sex offender?), but the dinner table scene of the finale was pretty hilarious.

And I assume the 'dad go home'/final shot is meant to foreshadow him moving back to Manhattan - guess his probation officer won't care?

boots get knocked from here to czechoslovakier (milo z), Sunday, 10 April 2011 06:53 (fourteen years ago)

i lost my access after the first four episodes this season, i want to know what happens : /

also to stare at carla gugino some more.

j., Sunday, 10 April 2011 06:57 (fourteen years ago)

the few times i've tried watching this i couldn't even enjoy it on a dumb fun/eye candy tip, made me feel more horrible than even, like, a later season of Entourage. just the worst.

borkslovethewu (some dude), Sunday, 10 April 2011 16:40 (fourteen years ago)

The season finale really seems like it was set up to be a possible series finale. Have they said whether this is renewed?

I know they are doing little homagey bits, but the fact they taped an episode in the same place they taped an early episode while pretending it's not is pretty cheap

mh, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 04:26 (thirteen years ago)

I guess I missed the last half of last season - started the first episode of this season and it's too awful to look at.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 6 February 2013 05:58 (thirteen years ago)

This was always a pretty dumb, offensive show but it's been taken to a whole new low.

The daughter's voice has matured beyond nails on a chalkboard, at least.

"So, not only are you a cadaverous lay, you have shitty taste in movies."

That quote from the first post summarizes this thread pretty well. Meaning, what kind of jaded, humorless sad sacks would bother to post on a discussion about this show just to express offense and moral outrage? Did you not read the warning label? This is not prime-time family entertainment, it's comedy for grown-ups. Yes, Hank can be douchey and constantly sabotages his life and makes bad decisions that most normal people would not make. But why would anyone who couldn't appreciate the wit of the writing and find his character strangely sympathetic in the first couple seasons bother watching now or post about it?

The quality of storylines ebb and flow, but overall I still love all the seasons. Some amazing cameos, like the horrendously and hilariously lascivious Kathleen Turner in S03, the iconic scenes with Rick Springfield and Marcy in S04, the jaw-droppingly unhinged performances from Rob Lowe as the batshit Eddie Nero. Season 6 is another homage to the juxtaposition of mythical 70s rock 'n' roll excess and old Hollywood, something that I doubt exists anymore (a private Airforce 69 jet decked out with a grand piano, waterbed and bar stocked with pizza, cocaine and apple juice), but it's sure as hell entertaining to watch. Alanna Ubach appears as the wife of a dead rockstar, complete with an over the top Cockney accent. Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols appears as Krull, the cranky bodyguard for Atticus, the looney British rock star played by Tim Minchin ("Masturbation is for the poor, the downtrodden, the silent unfuckables"). I can't think of any particular musician he's supposed to resemble other than maybe Ian Hunter merged with Russell Brand, but it's very, very funny.

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 1 March 2013 20:27 (twelve years ago)

Oh, and how could I forget RZA as Samurai Apocalypse in S05? Brilliant. Meagan Good was lovely that season too.

My best friend summarized it as Sex and the City for men, cuz men need their soaps too, lol.

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 1 March 2013 21:05 (twelve years ago)

it's comedy for grown-ups

I think you mean adults with an interest in juvenile tastes

☠ ☃ ☠ (mh), Friday, 1 March 2013 21:31 (twelve years ago)

I say this as someone who has seen all Californication episodes and still cringe at the casual misogyny, homophobia, and general fratty atmosphere

I thought Sex and the City for men was Entourage, which I watched approximately half of one episode of, as it was completely grating.
