Surmounter, Thursday, 16 August 2007 09:24 (eighteen years ago)

no MTLsmokedmeat, no credibility

G00blar, Thursday, 16 August 2007 09:38 (eighteen years ago)

Ugh, hard choice. I picked pastrami.

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 16 August 2007 12:30 (eighteen years ago)

fuck yeah, pastrami

Hurting 2, Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:25 (eighteen years ago)

Does anyone know if there's any etymological connection between pastrami and that cured mean (Turkish?) called basturma?

Hurting 2, Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:26 (eighteen years ago)

Nevermind, etymonline comes through in a way I would not have expected:

1940, from Yiddish pastrame, from Rumanian pastrama, probably from Turk. pastrima, variant of basdirma "dried meat," from root *bas- "to press." The other possible origin of the Rumanian word is Mod.Gk. pastono "I salt," from classical Gk. pastos "sprinkled with salt, salted." Spelling in Eng. with -mi probably from influence of salami.

Hurting 2, Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:27 (eighteen years ago)

pastrami 4 life

Jordan, Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:54 (eighteen years ago)

I'm very curious about the Super Heeb sandwich:

Whitefish salad, horseradish cream cheese and flying-fish roe on a bagel.

o. nate, Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:59 (eighteen years ago)

it's from russ and daughters, so it's probably fantastic.

lauren, Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:00 (eighteen years ago)

Various cures and smokes in a brisket may be my favorite way to eat a cow.

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:02 (eighteen years ago)

no MTLsmokedmeat, no credibility

seriously, fuck this poll!

s1ocki, Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

it ain't just hometown boosterism on my part... smoked meat really rules all.

s1ocki, Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

how is smoked meat different from pastrami? (serious question)
i ate at Ben's like 17 years ago or something, i don't remember......

gershy, Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

Smoked meat is like the best combination of pastrami and corned beef ever. That said I didn't like Ben's that much. Schwartz and the place across the street from Schwartz on the other hand completely ruled my world.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

soooooooooo is this the time of the year that i yet again reveal to all of ilx that i used to think that "pastrami" was an actual animal.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

Can be the brisket be BBQ'd?

kingfish, Thursday, 16 August 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

xpost haha!

I think smoked meat is technically brisket, but it's obviously MILES AND MILES away from what I think of as brisket.

G00blar, Thursday, 16 August 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

And wait- what would "some goyish bullshit" be if not corned beef?

G00blar, Thursday, 16 August 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

turkey.

corned beef can go either way on the goyische spectrum.

lauren, Thursday, 16 August 2007 15:04 (eighteen years ago)

hey alex bens is actually closed!

everyone hated the food there--it was all about the ambience.

s1ocki, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

and the milkshaeks.

G00blar, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

WANT ALL

jhøshea, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

What was the place across the street from Schwartz? Was it Millers? It started with an M, I think.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

THE MAIN

G00blar, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

(not as good, but open later, iirc)

G00blar, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

And no LINES!

Alex in SF, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

Absolutely true.

G00blar, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

God I loved food in Montreal. I still salivate thinking about Au Pied de Cochon.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

Corned Beef is very Jewish. The american goys only started eating it for St. Patricks day because they couldn't find their traditional irish bacon at the jewish deli.

dan selzer, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

I have bored many a friend/girlfriend with mtl food memories, esp steak frites and whatever the potage was at Entrecote St Jean, poutine obvs, schwartz's, and breakfasts at place milton. xpost

G00blar, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

Erm, no.

The irish corned beef tradition goes back way further than the new world. It's a traditional cristmas dish, often heavily spiced as well as salted to distiguish it from everyday salt beef.

Ed, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

I suspected as much, but didn't have the facts to back it up. Ed to the rescue!

G00blar, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

the main definitely has its charms. for late night smoked meat, poutine, pickles, varenekes, cherry coke, weird latkes, can not be beat.

and they occasionally produce a brilliatn smoked meat sandwich but their best efforts fall short of schwartz's and the sandwich is often a little too dry for my tastes.

still... an institution.

s1ocki, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

mmm au pied

s1ocki, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

the most goyish restaurant ever

s1ocki, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

I've got a good recipe for the spiced version which I have been meaning to try for ages now. Perhaps once it gets cold again (hahaha again) I shall make some up.

Ed, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

i would have heart attacks with all this sandwiches

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:38 (eighteen years ago)

jhøshea, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:38 (eighteen years ago)

irish corned beef tends to be warm + cabbage = ew

bnw, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

omg i want that katzs so bad now

jhøshea, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:40 (eighteen years ago)

Seriously. I think I'm going over the Cheviot Hills for lunch. Some great LA Jewish delis over there.

B.L.A.M., Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

corned beef if it's on a reuben, otherwise hot pastrami

kenan, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

well, I've read that many places. Here are some mentions...

dan selzer, Thursday, 16 August 2007 17:02 (eighteen years ago)

Best LA deli I've been to was in Northridge in a strip mall. Brent's it's called I think. Quite good.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 16 August 2007 17:03 (eighteen years ago)

yah brents is amazing.

chaki, Thursday, 16 August 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

I would say pastrami, but every bit of deli pastrami I get these days is MEGA fatty, so that -- heated up -- it oil-soaks a sandwich a little more than I care for. Corned beef, not as much.

Arf, the bagel sandwich up there is reminding me of a place by my old office in Queens with the single best smoked-whitefish-on-bagel I've ever encountered, nom nom nom.

nabisco, Thursday, 16 August 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

I'm confused about the brisket thing - brisket is just a cut of meat. It can be used to make other kinds of deli meat and is often used for corned beef. When I think of Jewish brisket I usually think of an oven-roast, not a deli meat. And BBQ and smoked brisket are Southern things, obv.

Hurting 2, Thursday, 16 August 2007 20:16 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Thursday, 16 August 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Is Carnegie Deli good anymore? Used to be.

wanko ergo sum, Thursday, 16 August 2007 23:09 (eighteen years ago)

sucks

Hurting 2, Thursday, 16 August 2007 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

like really fucking bad

Hurting 2, Thursday, 16 August 2007 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

I last ate there in '93. Terrible atmosphere, way too expensive, bu

wanko ergo sum, Thursday, 16 August 2007 23:12 (eighteen years ago)

t the meat was great.

wanko ergo sum, Thursday, 16 August 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

meat was old and nasty, soup was flavorless (and yeah, overpriced)

Hurting 2, Thursday, 16 August 2007 23:15 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, wanko, carnegie used to be decent but (mid-90s?) changed hands, I think, and is now god-awful.

Hurting: yeah, brisket to me is the dry, cooked-all-day, under-seasoned stuff we get at passover.

G00blar, Friday, 17 August 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

"some goyish bullshit" (aka hardwood-smoked and sauced brisket, and don't you dare call it barbecue) is pretty damn good though.

I gots to build me a smokebox.

Rock Hardy, Friday, 17 August 2007 00:24 (eighteen years ago)

Damn, now that all the old LES deli places are becoming million dollar condos, where's a good place to get some good pastrami on rye in NYC?

uhrrrrrrr10, Friday, 17 August 2007 01:33 (eighteen years ago)

and on the flip side, all the old jewish deli places in my home town in new jersey are now depressing mexican store fronts for MS-13

uhrrrrrrr10, Friday, 17 August 2007 01:34 (eighteen years ago)

LANGERS NOW, LANGERS FOREVER!

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 17 August 2007 01:35 (eighteen years ago)

for those not familiar with the type of brisket i'm talking about, here's a link to some brooklyn joint - anybody ever been there?
http://gothamist.com/2007/01/16/beauty_and_the.php

gershy, Friday, 17 August 2007 02:14 (eighteen years ago)

langer's is good

gershy, Friday, 17 August 2007 02:18 (eighteen years ago)

my cousin recomended Ben's on Queens Blvd but I haven't been yet. Maybe Dan has? Certainly won't be million dollar condos soon.
