how long do you wait to delete a dead person from the contact list on your phone?

my aunt's been dead for 6 months. but the thought of deleting her has a creepy finality to it, like I'm busy erasing her vestiges. maybe I should just do it.

usually the next morning

You could delete the contact info and just leave her name.

chaki's morning ritual:
1) cup o' joe
2) morning paper
3) delete deceased from cell phone

NEVER FORGET.

The Brainwasher, Friday, 17 August 2007 00:05 (eighteen years ago)

even creepier would be if I called and she answered

Edward III, Friday, 17 August 2007 00:07 (eighteen years ago)

does it make you happy to be reminded of your aunt when you scroll through the names? i have one friend on my phone who's no longer with us and i appreciate occasionally being prodded to remember him.

RIP

mixed feelings - she was a wacky, tough old broad. but it was a sad end. she died of exposure after she had a heart attack at a snowy bus stop. right outside the supermarket. had her bags with her and everything. poor lena. but yeah I do like being reminded of her.

RISIM

Matt, Friday, 17 August 2007 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

I'd leave her there, myself.

Matt, Friday, 17 August 2007 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

In the phone, I mean, not at the bus-stop.

I've got a dead college buddy's contact information still in my rolodex. No dead people in my phone though.

It makes me think about this article I read about the immediate crime scene following a terrorist attack in Israel. While the investigators seal off the place, the cellphones inside the corpses' pockets keep ringing and ringing...

I didn't do it at all, then I lost my cell phone + numbers.

I took possession of my mum's phone / answering machine (landline obv.) after she died, and kept her message on there. It creeps my brother out when he hears it. Two and a half years on I'm thinking about wiping it but can't bring myself to do it.

Sorry for your Mom. I was going to make a joke on here, but given that these are loved ones, I think I'll skip it.

humansuit, Friday, 17 August 2007 01:24 (eighteen years ago)

A joke about wiping it perchance?

Matt #2, Friday, 17 August 2007 01:36 (eighteen years ago)

Um, no. I was going to say I usually delete it right away, unless I killed the person, in which case I try to make it look like I'm sorry.

humansuit, Friday, 17 August 2007 01:49 (eighteen years ago)

too soon

robertwolf8080, Friday, 17 August 2007 01:53 (eighteen years ago)

i don't know any dead ppl ^_^

this is a lie but everyone i know who died died before i got a cell phone. i still have like exes from like 4 years ago in my phone, if that counts tho. i'm lazy.

jhøshea, Friday, 17 August 2007 02:36 (eighteen years ago)

As soon as I need to free up space for someone else's number

DJ Mencap, Friday, 17 August 2007 09:06 (eighteen years ago)

my mum's mobile is still listed on mine :(

she never used hers, it sat in the back room with the flowerpots, always on charge

mark s, Friday, 17 August 2007 09:11 (eighteen years ago)

I still have Liz's number in my phone. I cannot bring myself to delete it - every time I see her name and number flash by, it's like a sweet little reminder. This is gonna sound like the creepiest thing in the world, but have sent her a couple of texts last year when I really missed her, like thinking that her mobile would beep in heaven - well, I don't *believe* in heaven, so obviously I don't mean that literally. But it makes me smile, thinking that it would make *her* smile.

But I never knowingly delete anyone's numbers. Except ex boyfriends. And pop stars.

Masonic Boom, Friday, 17 August 2007 09:28 (eighteen years ago)

Some friends of mine are still linked to the Facebook profile of friend of theirs who died earlier this year. I'm not sure how I'd feel in that situation, especially what with there being pictures there and so forth.

I'd delete a phone number fairly swiftly, I think. Not sure I'd want the reminder. Also, don't they recycle phone numbers after a certain period of time?

Matt DC, Friday, 17 August 2007 09:39 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't had a mobile long enough for there to be dead man's numbers in there. But in my good old fashioned analogue paper contacts book, they are still written there. I'd feel callous removing any, I think.

I'm pretty sure that Nick wrote a song about this after one of his friends dies.
