E.M. Forster! Woolf was great, but Forster's writing was more likeable and (sometimes) funnier. Plus he never called anyone underbred.

Before I even read the responses so far I was like "This will inevitably turn into Woolf versus Keynes."

Woolf, though. Keynes was better at math and in roundabout ways I guess did more for the world at large, but Woolf has touched my soul, mannn. Seriously, she's my favorite author by a fair margin, and would get my vote in almost any poll that could be constructed with her in it.

Woolf understood the awesome of being alone, so she gets my vote.

i am intrigued who voted desmond maccarthy. i don't even know if he wrote any books! he was literary editor of the new statesman in the '20s. beyond that i dunno. i forgot to vote but leonard woolf is probably my guy here.

Reading Hermione Lee's Woolf bio a few months persuaded me to check him out; he was the equivalent of Louis Menand.
