Anyone have any good suggestions on nice watches? I want a watch again.

Ronan, Friday, 17 August 2007 10:40 (eighteen years ago)

I have a lego watch. Definitely qualifies as nice but probably not what you're after. I refuse to bow to pressure to procure myself a grown-up watch even though I'm 23. Tt's most reliable timepiece I've ever owned.

Uptoeleven, Friday, 17 August 2007 10:50 (eighteen years ago)

I bought one of these for Mr Unruly last year :

"On the multi-color LED model the red lights (12) indicate the hour, the green (3) indicate 15 minutes each & the Yellow (14) are 1 minute each.
By telling the time in this way it makes it very easy to see if its roughly quarter-past, half-past or quarter-to the hour. With each green LED worth 15 mins; then 2 lit equals 30 mins."

ledge, Friday, 17 August 2007 13:03 (eighteen years ago)

Oh ffs, what kind of insane bollocks is that?

HELPFUL HINT: if the big hand is pointing somewhere near 6, it's roughly half-past. Two indicators, no counting, 14 minutes past the hour is visually almost identical to 15 minutes past, as it should be.

Ray, Friday, 17 August 2007 13:12 (eighteen years ago)

I have this one:

It's awesome. I got to have numbers instead of just ticks, and I like the bold white ones.

Jeff, Friday, 17 August 2007 13:41 (eighteen years ago)

you can't hardly get watches REPAIRED any more -- this is sad to me

mark s, Friday, 17 August 2007 13:58 (eighteen years ago)

I thought this thread was another lady lonelyhearts one—someone who sits at her window all day and WATCHES FOR MEN.

Beth Parker, Friday, 17 August 2007 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

What's your watch budget, Ronan?

HI DERE, Friday, 17 August 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

I got tired of smashing the crystals out of mine so I quit wearing them.

Kerm, Friday, 17 August 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

Did you try putting them on your wrist instead of under your heel first?

HI DERE, Friday, 17 August 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

http://www.kaboodle.com/hi/img/2/0/0/16/5/AAAAAqPJdvMAAAAAABZRLQ.jpg

I have the Nixon DICTATOR. It can record stuff. You wouldn't think that would be useful, but sometimes it really is. Also people always go "wow, does your watch do something?," which is funny.

nabisco, Friday, 17 August 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

My dad still rocks calculator watches.

HI DERE, Friday, 17 August 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

I had a watch that made beats and looked awesome but I lost it before I figured out how to work it.

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 17 August 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

I thought about just wearing one of those damn near disposable casios, but my phone's got the time so eh...

Kerm, Friday, 17 August 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

Suppose I could also take my watch off before I do reckless shit with tools...

Kerm, Friday, 17 August 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

i love that nixon, and the ones RJG posted. and that one Bob Six posted is friggin cool

Surmounter, Friday, 17 August 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

C J, that watch is beautiful.

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 17 August 2007 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

I wear a Timex Expedition watch. It is the daintiest men's watch I could find. I was ecstatic to find it.

Most men's watches are purposely made to be enormous in order to give off manly man vibes. They usually have thick, knobbly watchbands and lots of extra technical-looking doodads for the same reason. OTOH, I have slender womanly wrists and such watches look clownlike and absurd on me.

Aimless, Friday, 17 August 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

If you're going to go for geeky dot watches, go binary! ;)
http://www.thinkgeek.com/images/products/zoom/ledbinarywatch.jpg

That other dot watch reminds me of that German clock-streetlight thing, are they basedo n the same thing at all?

Will M., Friday, 17 August 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, nabisco, those Nixon watches are nice as fuck.

this is my Timex and I love it:
http://www.valuelink1.com/photos/97001.jpg

I've been thinking about getting a Sinn chronograph, but everytime I look at one, I think that it costs 10x more but has the exact same use value (and the ones I'm interested in look almost identical!).

Spencer Chow, Friday, 17 August 2007 18:28 (eighteen years ago)

Google Russian Poljot watches. Amazing stuff.

l-r: my watch, not my watch

HI DERE, Friday, 17 August 2007 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

xpost per Russians --

I'm skeptical of watches with that many dials inset. You might as well just go all out and tie a sextant to your arm.

nabisco, Friday, 17 August 2007 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

(CAVEAT: not precisely my watch cuz mine has the seconds ticker instead of the date)

HI DERE, Friday, 17 August 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

Hamilton...classic watch maker name revived by Swatch group, makes sturdy, classy, classic, beautiful watch using slightly modified versions of their old styles. More than just the "Men In Black" Ventura. They make nice military style watches as well. Check out the Jazzmaster Power Reserve. Here's a regular Jazzmaster:

that is class. also, gotta have an analogue watch anyway, so you can do this... http://www.onebag.com/popups/wcompass.html

Will M., Friday, 17 August 2007 19:04 (eighteen years ago)

nabs I almost bought the dictator; glad to hear you're liking it. I ended up going with a really cool fossil watch which I can't find any pictures of anywhere online but TRUST ME IT'S CLASSY OKAY GUYS

bernard snowy, Friday, 17 August 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

Actually I have had some issues with the Dictator! I should have said this earlier, but ... after wearing it for about 9 months, I suspect a drop of rain got into the workings through the speaker grille, because one vertical line of the LCD display shorts in and out quite often, and I'm left determining the hour using only the two outer lines of the three-line digit display.

I like the Chalet, and may consider switching out.

nabisco, Friday, 17 August 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

my old watch was a swiss army like the one Jeff posted but w/ a cheaper band

those binary LED things are ridic

dmr, Friday, 17 August 2007 19:51 (eighteen years ago)

Some of those watches are really snazzy. Makes me want a watch.

Ivan, Friday, 17 August 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

Holy shit, I want one of those Nixons. Are they good, peeps who have them? Robust? Resistant to scratching? Comfy? Keep good time?

accentmonkey, Friday, 17 August 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

The binary watches make me imagine being stranded on a desert island with some asshole IT guy who's all like "well maybe if you'd learned binary you wouldn't be asking me what time it is."

nabisco, Friday, 17 August 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

^^^ issues

HI DERE, Friday, 17 August 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

Nixon really does make some good, interesting ones -- and I'm kinda forgiving the crap-out on my Dictator based on the logic that I should never have expected a watch with a grille to survive a drop of rain in the first place.

Basically I'm letting them off the hook on bad design because I want this:

binary's really easy to learn.

Will M., Friday, 17 August 2007 20:33 (eighteen years ago)

this is the other nixon I like. but I got the Chalet instead. I've had it for almost 2 years, a few scratches and scuffs but nothing major. I like it.

who mends these watches?

no one is who

you are all living on leveraged time

WHO WATCHES THE WATCH MENDER?

mark s, Friday, 17 August 2007 22:04 (eighteen years ago)

NIXON watches are the badassical, esp. that fake wood one Nabisco last posted. I lust after it in the stores, but it would be too big to fit around my upper arm, much lest my wrist. I'm a lady and I've got these crazy skinny forearms, I can reach like a foot through a chainlink fence.

I think men's watches are generally a lot more styling.

Those ones that are trying to look like a baby UNIVAC are ridic tho.

Abbott, Friday, 17 August 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

The art of repair of automatic, self-winding watches, i.e. the expensive swiss type which winds by the movement of your hand, is a dying art, so much that the Swatch group offers a free 2 year program in Secaucus NJ to train certified watchmakers. However, cheaper quartz watches are just that, cheaper quartz watches. They generally don't break, and if they do, you replace them. All that generally happens is you have to replace the band and the battery.

It's actually a good business oppurtunity though...sales of expensive automatic watches are rising while there aren't enough people to keep them running properly. I actually looked into that program 2 years ago. Thought, would it be cool to drop all the music and design bullshit and become a watchmaker, sit around all day repairing wristwatches? The idea of having a little shop and fixing and selling vintage watches seemed really cool, but then again, there's many reason why not many of those shops exist anymore. One obv. is that it's all done over the internet now. Years ago NYC had dozens of these awesome shops where you could buy vintage watches, now there's one or two I know of. So you'd end up working for some high-class jeweller fixing Rolex's all day.

dan selzer, Friday, 17 August 2007 22:33 (eighteen years ago)

Jeff, I am wearing the exact Swiss Army watch you posted. I also have a schmancy one for formal occasions but I don't drag it out much.

Drew Daniel, Saturday, 18 August 2007 00:50 (eighteen years ago)

I already have a clock in my phone. What do I want redundant stuff for?

Oilyrags, Saturday, 18 August 2007 00:51 (eighteen years ago)

OMG I found a watch in the dessert! What kind of sloppy maker is behind this spoilt dessert?

Abbott, Saturday, 18 August 2007 01:22 (eighteen years ago)

Roger, I love it!

Me too... though it needs a new strap. Those Sinn Fliegers are pretty hot too. Wish I'd thought to grab one before they went all pricey...

rogermexico., Saturday, 18 August 2007 01:56 (eighteen years ago)

wow....spoiled for choice now! so many cool watches.

Ronan, Saturday, 18 August 2007 09:04 (eighteen years ago)

two years pass...

alright guys so how small is too small for a men's watch? all the watches I'm interested in seem to be very small - as in the strap is maybe half an inch wide at the thickets, and the watchface is maybe a little smaller than a nickel.

囧 (dyao), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 00:55 (sixteen years ago)

I have learned from buying the wrong sized watchband that all of these things are measured in millimeters, regardless of nation or creed.
