Where do you fix a car in NYC?

I hate dealing with this. This is always the worst. Anyone know a trustworthy mechanic? Preferably NW Queens or Williamsburg/Greenpoint.

not that far if you consider I'm way north in queens and not far from the deegan, but also not that easy to take a train home.

five years pass...

car got hit while parked last night, driver's side mirror totally fucked and needs to be 100% replaced. scratches along the car's side also (which i don't care about much.)

already regretting car ownership and we've had it for barely a month.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Friday, 14 June 2013 17:03 (twelve years ago)

Probably not convenient for anyone who isn't in Woodside/Sunnyside/Astoria LIC, but I've been going to this place TM&T Tires for a few years now. They are super old-school. They're a pain to get on the phone, and seem really disorganized when you're waiting, and yet they are totally trustworthy. They've caught stuff other mechanics didn't, they've checked out stuff and not charged for time or anything. I've been satisfied with them. Another old-school place, I once stopped by Salerno down in Williamsburg and they spent all this time checking out my tire for leaks because I thought I had an issue and when they were sure it was fine the young kid asked the main dude how much and he said not to worry about it.

But for what it's worth, you can replace side-view mirrors on your own. I realized that after bringing mine in when the sideview mirror fell off. Yes, it just fell off, I'm totally convinced considering everything is falling apart and seeing at how it was put together (there's really just a spring holding it onto the car). You can buy a generic online and follow youtube videos to replace.

I had good experiences with Salerno auto repair in Williamsburg -- reasonable prices and very nice guys. Highly recommend.

I also had them once not charge me for a repair, they moved my car for me for a few days when my wife went into labor while they had the car and I wasn't around as a result, and they installed my carseat for free. They also figured out a way for me to not have to fix some insignificant but required evap system probelm in order to pass inspection, saved me a couple hundred bucks.
