We have a few threads on shoes, but none which focus on handbags. I searched in vain. So what's your handbag of choice? Do you like labels? Do you change them depending on the occasion (or whatever)? Do you buy a new one every year?
If I could have my way, then I'd buy this one:
http://www.net-a-porter.com/intl/images/product/26078/large/index.jpg
I am seriously tempted. I am currently "sporting" this Le Sportsac.
http://www.lesportsac.com/store/media/tokidoki/9515_4731.jpg
It's cute, it's lovely.... but it's a horrendously large bag in which I can NEVER EVER find ANYTHING, no matter how large the item is.
― nathalie, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 11:22 (eighteen years ago)
I also received a lovely BIG BOX in the mail with a very cute selfmade handbag! My husband was in awe of the sender's talent to make handbags. :-D
― nathalie, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 11:23 (eighteen years ago)
I change mine all the time, depending on what I'm wearing, what the season is, what mood I'm in etc etc.
Today I have one of these with me :

― C J, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 11:37 (eighteen years ago)
That's a Kipling bag, right? I'm not sure what's more important for me: a handbag or shoes. I'm extremely fussy about both tbh. :-(
― nathalie, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 12:08 (eighteen years ago)
Now that I'm lugging school books around with my again, I'm using my trusty Muji backpack but that's pretty boring.
I love bags. A log. My old favorites are a black leather hobo bag that seems to go with everything and isn't too big or a bright purple leather shoulder bag.
Hmmmm. Now I want a new one. I think I'll go browse online and see what's new for Fall.
― ENBB, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 13:18 (eighteen years ago)
Now that all the bags I was working on have been gifted I will post pics on Flickr (tonight). I've so far done two slightly different patterns myself but every time I make them, I change a little bit. Not completely happy yet.
Although I love love love handbags I really don't carry much them much myself. I like collecting them and making them.
Recently I bought fabric to make two for myself (I never make things for myself). One just a plan tote with a lovely pink hues striped cotton on the outside and beautiful reddish/pinkish taffeta on the inside. (this may not be practical but I don't care. I love the taffeta.) Also I plan on making a small hobo-style bag out of some denim with embroidered cherries I found.
I really need an industrial machine (or at least something more heavy duty) for handbag making.
Every day I carry a large lilac/brown shaped tote to work and a small reversible denim/pink polka dote bag when going to the store and stuff.
I love bags.
After my two mentioned above I'm going to tackle a messenger bag. As a gift of course.
― Ms Misery, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 13:30 (eighteen years ago)
I cart my stuff around in a lowe alpine day sack during the week and at the weekend use a rather non-descript black nylon shoulder bag with lots of useful pockets (so many pockets that I frequently lost my lighter in them when I still smoked). I did have a nice roomy brown tooled leather satchel but the strap gave up the ghost so I'm keeping an eye out for a replacement. I've also got a large selection of beaded and chainmail evening bags but seldom have the opportunity to take them out.
― leigh, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)
I've noticed that in Japan a handbag is extremely important. Women will go out of their way (?) to get the It Bag, an LV, a Prada or whatever. Here people don't really consider it all that important.
― nathalie, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)
Are status symbols just more important there in general?
― Ms Misery, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)
nathalie that bad is gorgeous you should get it
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

Are you drunk?
― Ms Misery, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)
haha no!!
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)
what i am is jealous of you ladies getting to sport big beautiful bags like that. :-(
Go for the man-purse. Be brave. And while you're at it a util-kilt and mandals.
― Ms Misery, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)
okay i do have a man-purse but its like BORING. diesel black leather with mesh and steel thing. small. i mean i like it but i want one of those uberbig glam bags. they have some for men at like armani but that's definitely a month's rent.
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:21 (eighteen years ago)
Well, I can only/mainly speak for Tokyo and, yes, I do think that status symbols do play a major role there. I don't think I have ever seen an Hermes bag here in my town, but it's certainly not uncommon to see a woman sporting one in Tokyo. Not sure if I would ever splash out 8000 euros on a bag. I can understand the craftmanship behind it, but it just seems a bit over the top. Then again maybe if I or my husband earned a stackload of money, then I'd probably do it. *shrug*.
I'm a big fan of the oversized totes made by Prada and Marc Jacobs. I just droooool.
― nathalie, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)
Also in Japan handbags do play a prominent role in women's attire. More so than here, I think.
― nathalie, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)
i hear ya
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)
I want to have that bag up there, together with this:

― nathalie, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:26 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah I think spending money like that (thousands) on clothing, shoes, bags is just ridiculous. I don't think I could ever do it I don't care how rich I was.
― Ms Misery, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)
i just got this the other day:

fuck nat shoes with bag = speechless
OMG LAUREN - that color is my bag color of the moment. SO HOT.
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:35 (eighteen years ago)
i'm seen some more teal-ish but that straight cobalt or whatever the eff u call it really gets me
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)
i love royal blue/indigo, so i'm really happy that it's popular at the moment.
while we're talking shoes, i lust after these:

amazing.
so that's what the color is called? royal blue/indigo? it's definitely my favorite accessories color of the moment. simple, sexy, striking.
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)
i don't know if that's the right name for it, but i think it's a royal blue. indigo has a little more purple in it, which i also like.
― lauren, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)
yep you're right
royal blue

― Surmounter, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)
Can you get one of those, in cobalt blue, so I can compare the perfect blue?
― Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)
cobalt http://www.hectarus.com/photos/photo-Elenali-Colors-410-Cobalt-Blue.jpg
so a bit darker?
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)
i like the royal but cobalt works
Mmmmm, cobalt blue is my favourite colour of all time, I just wanted to look at it.
Royal blue just reminds me of unclicked links. (Ha ha, I am such a geek.)
― Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)
Web developers pls to employ more custom stylesheets, kthx.
― Ms Misery, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)
Now if we could just get in some Yves Klein International blue, and I'd be in my blue heaven.
― Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

oh yea i never thought about unclicked links as being royal blue! my screen just took on a whole new persona...

I found a pic of one of the purses I've made recently on my data stick:
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1435/1195554506_fe260c425a.jpg
Basic kind of boxy design, I think it was the first purse I made. The one I made for Nath was the same material but wider and slouchier. Also had strap instead of handles.
― Ms Misery, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)
way cute!
― sweet tater, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)
Ooh, Sam, that's lovely. I'm not really a bag sort of person, in that I don't care enough to choose ones for myself, but my m-in-law keeps buying me bags so I have rather a lot, and they're mostly really nice.
― ailsa, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)
Must complete the blue set:

― Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)
ya i'm totally impressed with that purse mm (sam is it, then?)
now wait what blue is that? is that international blue or whatever? (i didn't even know that was a blue)
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)
whatever it is, i wear that color ^ really well
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)
That's International Klein Blue, that last one. It's a slightly darker version of Cobalt.
― Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)
right. v nice

I really want an industrial machine so I can do leather. Finishing edges with impossibly thick layers of many fabrics and interfacing is bad enough on my machine. It's barely over a year old but I think I'm about to kill it.

I am disappointed that nathalie missed her golden chance to entitle this thread: "your fossicking handbag". These opportunitites come around only so often, you know, and one must make hay while the sun is properly situated and all that.
― Aimless, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)
oo lauren.
i like the yellow one bell! so does anyone carry a small purse anymore??
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)
Lauren, I love love LOVE that handbag as well.
http://www.net-a-porter.com/intl/images/product/23581/large/index.jpg
Love this Marc Jacobs bag as well. Not sooo terribly expensive either.

I know! I'm so happy with the one Sam made me. Even my husband was in complete awe of it. :-)
― stevienixed, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 17:46 (eighteen years ago)
i can't do halter tops. Just doesn't look right. . .
― Ms Misery, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)
Oh I know, Sam. :-)
Halter tops are horrendous if you have big breasts. Or slouch. So I don't wear'em.
― stevienixed, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)
lol okay fine errant example but the POINT is imagine, ladies, being confined to pants and button downs in various appropriate colors AS YOUR WHOLE FUCKING WARDROBE
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)
lauren i am really liking everything prada this season, as hideous as it seemed first showing up on the runway! that and balenciaga but i wouldn't get a bag from them, i'd get one of their preppy fitted blazers and the robot shoes http://www.designboom.com/weblog/images/shoe_big.jpg
my usual bag is just a doctor's bag from club monaco in a weird sort of muddied very dark brown with some dark blue and black in it. not really camouflage (i am against camouflage) but more like if someone was trying to do camo using blue/black watercolors. it's kind of ugly in a cool way i think
― daria-g, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

So cross-dress. You'd hardly be the first.
― Ms Misery, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 18:00 (eighteen years ago)
::deep breath::
that fucking shoe is amazing
i know i'm working on it sam
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 18:00 (eighteen years ago)
Didn't Ghesquiere design those shoes? Who's behind the label now?
Prada is just DA YUM. I also like everything this season. Same goes for Marc Jacobs, he's been doing great stuff.
― stevienixed, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)
i like that mj bag, nath.
i'm also hyperventilating over prada's elbow-length two- or three-tone leather gloves (at a mere $700, ha).
― lauren, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)
so i have a gift card to saks that i haven't used yet because everything there is so expensive, but i found these on the site: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1247/1195493435_1df8e60758_m.jpg
if i used the card, they'd be affordable. i'm really tempted.
― lauren, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)
very nice, would you be able to pair them with outfits?
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)
How much?
― Ms Misery, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 18:18 (eighteen years ago)
about $75 in addition to the gift card.
most of my clothes are black, grey, or some other solid color that would work.
― lauren, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 18:24 (eighteen years ago)
Those flats would go with a lot of things. $75 doesn't seem like a bad deal.
― Ms Misery, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 18:28 (eighteen years ago)
Lauren, they're fab. You should get them, if you possibly can.
― accentmonkey, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)
i just double-checked the site to see if they've got my size etc and it turns out that i misread the price. $25 with my gift card! that's my fall pair of shoes sorted out, then.
― lauren, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

― ENBB, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)
the balenciaga pair i posted, yes, that's ghesquiere.. i think they are like $1400 :(
and who is going to knock those off? i can't see it happening
zara has some nice knockoffs of the prada style shoes (they never have my size though) and some colorblock/40's style tops, i got two of those.. but it'll be hard to find the type of prada stuff that i really like! i have one super fuzzy black pullover sweater that I cut the sleeves off and started wearing last year, thinking it was the time for it but.. can't afford these pieces sadly!

MORE HANDBAGS PLS
― C J, Thursday, 23 August 2007 08:01 (eighteen years ago)
I'm undecided about whether to buy a tote or shoulder bag. (Yes, I'm being completely mental and am planning to buy a Miu Miu/Marc Jacobs bag. I'm even going so much overboard that I'm probably buying this 10 CM pumps (sans flaps though) I mentioned way up thread. Why oh why? I do this every couple of years: buy something ridiculously pretty but uncomfortable. Now with a new baby, do I want to totter around with a baby? Anyway, I do think a handbag is needed. :-)
http://www.net-a-porter.com/intl/images/product/24499/large/index.jpg
I quite like it, but I don't think the lock is practical.
― nathalie, Thursday, 23 August 2007 08:28 (eighteen years ago)
Oh, that's lovely!
― C J, Thursday, 23 August 2007 08:36 (eighteen years ago)
I know, but don't you think the lock is a bit unwieldly? I didn't notice the price. If it's close to 1000 euros, fuck it, I ain't buying it. :-)
― nathalie, Thursday, 23 August 2007 08:41 (eighteen years ago)
Unwieldy? No. I think it's perfectly in proportion to the size of the bag. It looks great. I WANT.
― C J, Thursday, 23 August 2007 08:47 (eighteen years ago)
Can I show a man-bag?
Today (and most days) Dr. C is modelling this (but in black) :
http://www.johnlewis.com/jl_assets/product/230208561.jpg
It's a John Lewis large messenger bag, and is cavernous.
― Dr.C, Thursday, 23 August 2007 09:10 (eighteen years ago)
Oh man, that is a GREBT man-bag!
CJ, I know but it seems *clumsy* if you wanna open and close it. WHAT TO DO!!!!!
― nathalie, Thursday, 23 August 2007 09:24 (eighteen years ago)
I absolutely hate messenger bags. I just don't get the point of the flap over the top. So you have to flip the thing back every time you want to take something out of it? Annoying! (I realise this is my own personal issue. Nobody else seems to have a problem with them.) I'm more of a flight-bag person.
http://www.inretro.net/images/mbsu008-3a.jpg
Of course, since I don't travel by public transport much anymore, my need for such bags has greatly diminished.
― accentmonkey, Thursday, 23 August 2007 09:29 (eighteen years ago)
Yes, the flappy thing can be a nuisance, but the side pocket is absolutely huge and I can fit all the stuff that I want to get access to all the time in there, leaving the inside compartment for secret stuff. I am a sucker for all the nice little pen compartments and pockets it has too.
Not sure about flight bags - a bit too square.
― Dr.C, Thursday, 23 August 2007 09:46 (eighteen years ago)
xpost Love that print!

Yesterday I got a new purse, and I was excited about it because it seemed just right. The right size, the right closures, the right strap, the right price. It's brown, and usually I have black or burgundy purses, but that was ok. I have been through many purses throughout the years, and this one just called out to me from the store.
Bear with me here.
Today I put old stuff into new purse and tried it on, walked around the house a little with it. This feels really familiar for some reason.
Why do I have such strong positive feelings about this bag?
OH YEAH
It looks exactly -- and by exactly I mean almost exactly -- like the purse I had through most of high school. That one was black with silver zippers, this one is brown with faded gold-ish zippers, but it's basically the same damn purse.
Now I can barely look at it because I feel like such a sucker.
