Does anyone know what's up with this town? Is it charming and quaint or a cultural backwater? NB I will be there for less than four (4) days.

They have a lot of metal bands there. I think they like Iron Maiden a lot?
― Jordan, Thursday, 23 August 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)
thriving music scene, apparently.

They have a superb orchestra which recorded scads of excellent Sibelius discs on an independent label in the 80's-90's.

It's not bad. Depends what you're after. It has a few good pubs, a good park, a good art museum, it has Liseberg the biggest theme park in Sweden (it's no Alton Towers though, not by a long chalk). The most popular, busiest place for flashy bars and eateries and whatnot is Avenyn (the avenue), whilst Haga is the more 'boho' area, good for people watching over large cinnamon buns and coffee in cafes.
What else? I dunno. It's quite laid-back, I suppose. People are freindly. It's okay.

this "haga"of which you speak sounds delightful. I am also around the corner from the amusement park, which i might go to on monday evening.
is there an old town or a scuzzy to-be-gentrified portion of the city?i assume the docks aren't exactly easy access.
― Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Saturday, 1 September 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)
I think Haga and the parts around there are the gentrified cobbled old-town, now all cafe society and boutiques quarter. Or one of them.
You can walk all around the harbour on the 'town' side of the river (the opera house and a maritime museum is also there, as well as river boat trips). I don't know about access to the docks on the 'industrial' side.

My swedish friend says:
The street Magasinsgatan is nice as far as clubs go. The area around Järntorget is kinda studenty and more affordable than much else (Sweden being notoriously expensive.) Right next to the Järntorget is Haga, which is nice for strolling. The Avenue is the big street, very centrally located, lots of tourists, lots of party in the nighttime. At the far end of the Avenue is the Poseidon, the art museum, the local theatre, and the fanciest place in town, Park Lane.
Goteborg is basically a large smalltown, meaning that you can walk basically everywhere if you want to. Otherwise, just hop on the bus or the trams and they'll take you anywhere. You can purchase a three-day pass for the buses and the trams. Avoid taxis, they're hella expensive and you risk robbery.
Also if he has time and the weather is nice, taking the ferry and going into the archipelago outside the Gothenburg coast is fun. Be prepared for bad weather, cuz Gburg weather is notoriously fickle. The locals actually have a reputation for being nice and welcoming -- and everyone speaks english, so never be afraid to ask someone where shit is. A beer costs roughly 3 euros.

prepare for chilly weather because fall has come early to sweden. normally the weather would be relatively warm about this time a year, but not this year.

It is interesting to note that, while ilx no longer displays much interest in Superbad, tits still serve as the soupbase of ilx.

WALKING TOWN! There are buses and shit to take you place but if you're anywhere NEAR the college you can walk anywhere at all. There's a lot of french/italian places to eat, which kind of bummed me out. We ended up finding this "swedish food" place on a corner near the old downtown near the campus. I can't remeber where it's called but it was really, REALLY good.
