http://estrip.org/elmwood/users/paul/images/0706/pigSkins3210.jpg like that, but on the walls.
the living room is pale yellow. that's the color it was when i moved in, and i'm ok with it. i think i will paint the grey hallway a bright blue, and the bathroom a toothpastey mint color. is that too much color? the kitchen is staying white.
― bell_labs, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:15 (eighteen years ago)
i hate neutral colors on walls. they depress me.
― bell_labs, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:17 (eighteen years ago)
paint it black
― kenan, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)
I do not believe you can have too much color.
That said our house is pretty tame though no walls are white.
― Ms Misery, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)
i see a nacho cheese room and i want it to turn black
kenan you will never see my nacho cheez room
― bell_labs, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)
my bedroom is a womb. red walls, red sheets, i like to sleep with red
― kenan, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)
Ours is red too, but it was a mistake. It took us four freaking coats though so I doubt we'll change it before it's time to sell.
― Ms Misery, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)
Painting your walls one color and then painting them back to white again when you move seems like too much trouble.
― jaymc, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)
yeah, why doesn't red paint cover as easily as any other color?
― kenan, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)
i love the nacho color. it is cheerful and appetizing.
― bell_labs, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)
i painted my room in my parents' house a really nice deep red last year - it was a custom color, though so i can't tell you the name. i tweaked with one of the formulas of a regular color. it is amazing and i love it and wish every room i ever have could be that color. i wonder if i stay in this apt, if i can paint?
red is a low hide paint. you will have beter luck if you put primer on first. unless you meant painting over red. probably same plan - prime, then paint.
― tehresa, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)
i think when it comes to decor, i'm still a bit of a goth. My black-and-chocolate-brown living room is starting to wear on my mood. I need more red and orange and yellow in my life.

We own the house. We'd like to enjoy it while we live in it. But we plan to resell in a few years after we've upped the value considerably. The rest of the house is painted pretty sedate. Mostly in shades of khaki and muted dollar-y greens. Our two rooms are a very light blue-green and a pale pink. The bedroom will be the only one we'll have to repaint.
I have no idea why red is so hard.
― Ms Misery, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)
is that picture up top a stuffed potato skin? nom nom nom
― kenan, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)
i'm telling you, primer works miracles when working with red (i know this from having primed and not having primed in two different rooms).
― tehresa, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)
why do you have to repaint it??? i mean if you are selling your own property you can do it up however you want, your landlord isn't going to yell at you. the color scheme might be a selling point to some customers, and you can always offer to repaint after sale if it is a sticking point for others.
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)
I like light walls (grays blues etc.) and earth tones, bring color through wall-hangings and furniture.
― milo z, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)
for the kitchen: eggshell or gloss finish?
― bell_labs, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:26 (eighteen years ago)
Painted an old ladies house last year after her husband died. Every room a different pastel, mostly pinks. It was a nightmare.
― milo z, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:26 (eighteen years ago)
xp - flat. If you've got one in NYC look for a Sherwin-Williams and buy their Duration Home. Shit is magic.
― milo z, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:27 (eighteen years ago)
(that's a type of paint - low-odor, the flat is as washable as a high-gloss latex without rubbing off, it's awesome really)
cool ranch for the kitchen
― brownie, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)
yeah, i primed my bedroom, having learned my lesson once trying to paint white cabinets orange and never quite getting it right. Still, with red I have learned to always buy more paint than you think you'll need.
― kenan, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)
ally i think lighter walls may make rooms seem bigger to potential buyers?
i second flat finish for kitchen. not a fan of the glosses at all.
― tehresa, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)
a gloss finish in the kitchen. they make special paint for this which allows for easier clean up
― carne asada, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:29 (eighteen years ago)
the color scheme might be a selling point to some customers, and you can always offer to repaint after sale if it is a sticking point for others.
If you watch HGTV you'll notice how people seem to have a complete inability to understand that they can repaint walls or that the current owner's furniture will not be there when they move in. Stupid, I know, but not worth impacting sales with.
The bedroom is the only one I think would cause problems for us. Nothing else would need to be repainted. Also I said red was a mistake not b/c it was hard to do but b/c it doesn't go with our silver bedroom suite. Nobody to blame but ourselves for that one.
― Ms Misery, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:29 (eighteen years ago)
hmm. what about the bathroom? high-gloss is usually what i go with because it seems more mildew resistant but flat may actually look better.
― bell_labs, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)
you guys are going to make me go buy more paint this weekend
― kenan, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)
Ally, I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that the lease I just signed said that if I painted, I had to repaint it in white before I moved. I guess I assumed this was standard? I've never painted anywhere I've lived, mostly because I'm lazy and haven't really cared about decor that much.
― jaymc, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)
xxpost, What are the floors/tiles like?
― Ms Misery, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)
i just finished painting my whole apartment yesterday. so glad it's over
― carne asada, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)
my landlord gave me free reign to paint whatever colors i wanted because the walls were not white to begin with.
― bell_labs, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)
I didn't even check my lease. I just got ta paintin'. Fuck 'em.
― kenan, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)
High-gloss is unpleasant (for me) to paint on walls and ceilings unless I spray. More noticeable streaking and it brings out imperfections in the sheetrock/texture.
On the occasions anyone asks me, I recommend egg-shell/stain for walls and semi-gloss for trim/cabinets. (Would recommend Duration flat but no one wants to pay $30 a gallon for the Duration Home.)
― milo z, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:33 (eighteen years ago)
xpost my bathroom has white ceramic floor tile and HIDEOUS black fake marble tiles that go 2/3 of the way up the walls throughout the bathroom.
― bell_labs, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)
I'm actually partial to "eggshell" (sometimes called "satin") for walls, which is sort of in between glossy and matte. Flat catches (and holds onto) too much dirt, and high-gloss shows every imperfection and glares at you. Glossier paints are good for woodwork and ceilings (to bounce the light back down).
― Laurel, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)
oh also, unrelated, but i bought a new toilet seat but i'm having trouble removing the old one; the bolts are completely stuck and i don't know what to do u_u
― bell_labs, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)
and don't forget to sand before painting!!!
― tehresa, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)
Bell, they might have used a sealant on the bolts when it was attached? I'm sure there's a penetrant that will help here -- Simple Green or WD40?
― Laurel, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:37 (eighteen years ago)
i'll try that laurel!
― bell_labs, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)
Cut them!
If your bathroom is that glossy, I wouldn't use a high-gloss paint.

Paint finish guide
― Laurel, Thursday, 23 August 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)
We have flat Dutch Boy Navaho White everywhere, with white semi-gloss trim. I'd like a slightly deeper warmer color, but there are so many things we'd have to move in order to paint! Let the paintings provide color.
― Beth Parker, Thursday, 23 August 2007 18:24 (eighteen years ago)
i actually don't have any art for the walls which is kind of lulz as i work at a museum u_u
― bell_labs, Thursday, 23 August 2007 18:28 (eighteen years ago)
i mean- i have a couple metallic tiger things from dollarstores and posters but i don't think i will put them up this time.
― bell_labs, Thursday, 23 August 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)
has anyone ever painted over linoleum tiles?
― bell_labs, Thursday, 23 August 2007 18:33 (eighteen years ago)
My husband used to be a housepainter. I'll ask him.
― Beth Parker, Thursday, 23 August 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)
Don't think it would be a problem any more than painting any other kind of floor would be.
― milo z, Thursday, 23 August 2007 18:39 (eighteen years ago)
Is replacing them not an option? (can't remember if you're renting)
― Ms Misery, Thursday, 23 August 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)
easier than ripping them all of the walls and dealing with that mess too there are all kinds of crazy paints for all kinds of things at home depot! i noticed
― rrrobyn, Thursday, 23 August 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)
tearing up linoleum tile is torture unless they've been flooded enough to break the glue bond
― milo z, Thursday, 23 August 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)
i'm renting. otherwise i'd change them in a second! they look like a high school cafeteria.
― bell_labs, Thursday, 23 August 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)
if they're not in a kitchen/bathroom maybe you could put carpet tiles over them?
I think it was linoleum under the ceramic tiles when we first moved into our house. It was hard to tell as they had pretty much fused with the concrete slab. We had to chisel them up/sand them off. :/
― Ms Misery, Thursday, 23 August 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)
they also just collect so much dirt because they are very old. i have them in my kitchen. the floor underneath is plywood...
― bell_labs, Thursday, 23 August 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)
i bet there is some kind of pre-painting adhesive that you can apply, sand and then paint over oh check it http://www.msbuilder.com/lib/ms041.shtml
― rrrobyn, Thursday, 23 August 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)
We did our kitchen in gloss brick red, roughly Pantone 194. Looks cool.
― Rock Hardy, Thursday, 23 August 2007 18:48 (eighteen years ago)
"Clean the floor - Lightly Sand the floor - Vacuum - Use wood filler in any places that need it, let dry, sand, and clean - Use an oil base primer (have it tinted if you plan to apply dark color) - Paint on just as you would a wall - Apply oil based top coat (could take 4 to 5 days to dry. - Apply second coat - Wait 4 to five days and add a urethane finish (be sure it is a floor urethane finish)"
― rrrobyn, Thursday, 23 August 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)
that sounds like a lot of work...4-5 days to dry for each coat? that is would definitely get covered in paw prints
― bell_labs, Thursday, 23 August 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)
i wonder if i could just do a urethane finish over the linoleum so it at least tracks less dirt?
― bell_labs, Thursday, 23 August 2007 18:59 (eighteen years ago)
How long are you likely to live in this place?
A less labor-intensive process (like latex paint) will start to chip sooner - but if you're looking at being in this place for a year, it might not matter.
― milo z, Thursday, 23 August 2007 19:03 (eighteen years ago)
i'll hopefully be here a couple of years! but we'll see.
― bell_labs, Thursday, 23 August 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)
yeah the instructions are for floors, so i think you'd be able to get away with less than 3 steps (!) for painting walls (unless you are going to be walking on them)
― rrrobyn, Thursday, 23 August 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)
i am not sure about how i feel w/r/t the hallway color. i picked a very bright cobalt blue and now with the yellow in the living room, the color combo is maybe too http://www.dayinthepark.org/images/ikea_logo.gif :/ it's almost the exact same color as painting tape! i'm sure i'll get used to it. it is very bright which i wanted.
i picked a hot/humid day to paint, too. blah
― bell_labs, Saturday, 25 August 2007 21:07 (eighteen years ago)
Omigod, Beth, my mom paints EVERYTHING Navajo White. I am not kidding.
― Abbott, Saturday, 25 August 2007 21:22 (eighteen years ago)
i hope i can get over my revulsion to this color. i loved it while i was painting it but it dried so ...eh. the bathroom looks good though.
― bell_labs, Saturday, 25 August 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)
i'm talking about the "ikea blue" in the hallway btw, not the nacho cheez, which is still awesome.
― bell_labs, Saturday, 25 August 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)
hm, if it ends up being something you can't get used to, i guess you can always paint over it! this is, btw, one of the reasons i rarely paint - fear of the colours just not turning out right. put enough stuff on the walls and white seems to be good enough for me anyway. i will only paint if it is guaranteed to be a painting party i.e., 3+ people
did you paint the linoleum in the bathroom?
― rrrobyn, Saturday, 25 August 2007 22:20 (eighteen years ago)
i didn't do the linoleum (yet), just the walls. i wish people would come over for a painting party! the blue hall is at least better than the dinged up grey before it, and it's a pretty small area if i need to repaint it later. i just want bright/happy cos neutral colors seem like a good idea for decorating but then just become depressing in the winter.
― bell_labs, Saturday, 25 August 2007 22:40 (eighteen years ago)
at least it's not too girly which is usually the painting mistake i make (previous rooms have been salmon pink, lavender, and pale yellow)
― bell_labs, Saturday, 25 August 2007 22:42 (eighteen years ago)
leave the tape up and by new color next week, or take it down and see if i can live with this? how long can you leave tape up?
― bell_labs, Saturday, 25 August 2007 23:19 (eighteen years ago)
blue painters' tape? About two weeks without leaving residue
― milo z, Sunday, 26 August 2007 01:25 (eighteen years ago)
i finally repainted the hallway yesterday, it is a greyish-greenish-blue and very nice. now the kitchen looks lonely in white though! but i don't want my house to be a rainbow explosion. hmmmm
― bell_labs, Sunday, 16 September 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)
as long as it is not this kind of rainbow explosion you are ok http://www.asisupplier.com/80485/imagesweb/suncatchers/onboard.jpg

also i want to replace the sink basin in my bathroom. how hard it this to do yourself?
― bell_labs, Thursday, 24 January 2008 23:04 (eighteen years ago)
nacho cheese is one of my favorite colors
― Abbott, Friday, 25 January 2008 00:57 (eighteen years ago)
Sink basin can be rough due to possible need for specialist tools. Also plumbing = GAH STOP LEAKING WHY ARE YOU LEAKING I CANT TIGHTEN THAT ANY TIGHTER GAH! (based on real life experience)

depends, is it attached to the wall, on a pedestal, in a vanity, etc. ranges from pretty easy to it would be easier to move. plumbing is one of those things that you can't do a half assed job on and say oh well i'll live with it.
― chicago kevin, Friday, 25 January 2008 01:14 (eighteen years ago)
it's in a vanity. it has ugly stains on it and i hate having to look at it everyday, and doesn't seem like it would be very expensive to fix. if i could do it myself. but i know exactly nothing about plumbing so that doesn't sound like the best idea.
