It doesn't work with the bunny - that rabbit is definitely going NUM NUM. If you were to Photoshop a big pair of jaws and a monstrous face about to eat the bunny itself, that would be OM NOM NOM NOM.

I believe OM NOM NOM NOM attempts to spell (onomatopoetically!) the sound Homer Simpson makes while stuffing huge amounts of food into his mouth. He does this in so many episodes that it is almost as standardized as HA HA or excellent.

I think the OM NOM actually begins with Cookie Monster, which is more NOM-y and less gutteral/gulleteral than Homer does.

I think kingfish nailed it. Homer is ancient in tv terms, but Cookie Monster is one Methuselah, and the OM NOM sound fits him better, too.
