Dungeons and Dragons The Cartoon: S & D

Okay, there must be some fans in this bee-yotch. :) Out with it then--favorite characters, episodes (what happened), etc. I vaguely remember them myself...

Search: One episode about "Starfall" and the Astronomer's Child (?); that's all I remember about it, but I remember it was kewwwwl, especially the ending. Another cool one: "Hall of Bones". Or the one where you find out Venger was the DM's son? Very Paradise Lost...

Destroy: Since there weren't enough episodes, I can't think of any that really, *really* sucked. However, all the good guys were super-lame (except maybe the acrobat gal). Double-dud on the Unicorn, which I kept hoping would get fried by Tiamat each episode.

Joe, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The unicorn got tied down once and was going to be killed for its horn. Alas, it was saved.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Was there a roller coaster in this show, maybe the opening? That's about all I remember.

Kris, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yup. The kids went around on that and entered the D & D dimension through a tunnel.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I loved this show. Did they ever get home? I don't think so. I didn't really have a favourite character, but Dragon's Graveyard, where you discover the truth about Venger, was really good. Apparently in a never-produced but written episode, called 'Requiem', the heroes saved Venger from his evil ways, bringing him back as Dungeon Master's son, and were given the chance to finally go home. And it was left totally open as to whether they took it.

Paul Strange, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Annoying. Shoddy animation. destroy all.

D*A*V*I*D*M, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I remember almost nothing about it, except the intro and how sad it was - me, being young at the time it was on, had typical kiddie fear of being separated from parents.

DG, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

venger was DM's son? i never knew that. i do know that the "voice" of venger went on to become the "voice" of eeyore in the tigger movie.

kevan, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah - Venger was Dungeon Master's son. He apparently ran away to be trained by some evil master, and became the evil Venger as a result. Of course, I blame the parents. You call your kid Venger, he's going to wind up being evil. Should have called him Keith or Gary.

Paul Strange, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Like many old things, thinking about this prog makes me nostalgic. But I must not let that get in the way of the fact that it was terrible, in every way I can remember.

the pinefox, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's a shame you don't apply this admirably sharp green pencil in other areas, pinefox. Say, Deacon Blue.

Nick, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I actually don't remember it being that bad, compared to other cartoons of the day. Still, given I was about 8 or 9 when I used to watch it I guess I could very easily be wrong...

Paul Strange, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

! You can talk.

the pinefox, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's right, they did try to kill the unicorn one episode, didn't they. I remember some statue with multiple hands each holding a bunch of unicorn horns. Was that Venger trying to kill the unicorn, or someone else? I seem to remember it being a rival of Venger's.

One thing I've never understood about all these cartoons, is that they always make the bad guys look so badass and the good guys so wimpy, but then the baddies always end up getting their asses kicked each episode. Call it The "Mumm-Ra" Syndrome... :)

Joe, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

God damn the little troublemakers! They couldnt survive for on e day in magic land if not for it being a children's show. Cool bow though.

Mike Hanley, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
Tiamat was easily the best character in this cartoon, she (I think) was much harder that Venger, I think whenever they had to fight each other he always lost. I would like to see a fight between Dungeon Master and Tiamat, I bet Tiamat could blast the little fella off the face of the earth.."TIA-MAT!!" (said in loud dragon-like voice).

David Hymers, Monday, 7 October 2002 13:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree Mike, the bow was the highlight of the show but he never used it enough. I'd be firing it all the time, and it made a cool noise.

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Monday, 7 October 2002 13:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Great show. It is somewhat poignant that every episode ended with cruel, bitter disappointment when their plans to go home fell through. Poor kids. The one episode that sticks out in my mind is the one where each of the gang had to face his/her greatest fear, and the greatest fear of the thief (the gal with the cloak of invisibility) was loneliness. I mean, fer chrissakes, this is a Sat. morning kids show! Next on Saturday Storybook, The Ballad of the Sad Cafe.

My only wish is that one of Bigby's hands could've made an appearance.

Ernest P., Monday, 7 October 2002 13:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to love that show. For some reason, my fave character was the Cavalier -- the worst one! Voice of Hank = Willie Aames of 8 is Enough and Charles in Charge fame.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 7 October 2002 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

AND the voice of the magician was Adam what's-his-name (ya know, the child star), ALSO from Eight is Enough.

And if that weren't enough, Donny Most of Happy Days (which also featured Scott Baio who later went on to Charles in Charge) did the voice of the Cavalier.

I think "Frank Welker" really = Tom Bosley. :)

Joe (Joe), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 22:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I loved this cartoon but remember almost nothing about it beyond the episode where they meade it home but had to go back because the evil guy followed them and was going to enslave Earth. CLASSIC.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

They did get home in the very last one, but I think they chose to go back! (although that may have been a dream I had) The unicorn was originally called 'Uni'. I thought it was good.

Mckenzie (Mckenzie), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 22:57 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...

Is there any truth to the rumor that the real wrap-up/resolution of the show was that in fact they'd all died on the roller-coaster?

nate p. (natepatrin), Saturday, 22 July 2006 01:12 (nineteen years ago)

i thought that it was the DM was in league with Venger for some reason

kingfish cyclopean ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Saturday, 22 July 2006 03:55 (nineteen years ago)

i just started watching this again on some digital platinum-plus third tier extended cable station. it's so bad, but still kind of enjoyable. and i find myself slipping into angry 11-year-old D&D pedant quite easily ("what, did they just send these morons a POST-IT NOTE with character classes written on it?!").

i absolutely would not miss this show as a kid. when they moved it earlier and earlier i would actually wake up just to watch it.

also frank welker has the best job in the universe.

All I remember is REALLY hating the Milhouse wizard kid.

the doaple gonger (nickalicious), Monday, 24 July 2006 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

they were useless, every episode involved their weapons being stolen didn't it?

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 24 July 2006 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

From wiki...

In 1985, the National Coalition on Television Violence claimed it was the most violent show on television. It should be noted that at least some of the criticism of the show was based not so much on its actual content, as its association with the Dungeons & Dragons franchise which had become highly controversial by the 1980s due to its supposedly occult content.

Frank Welker & Peter Cullen, aka the OG voices of MEGATRON & OPTIMUS PRIME!

the doaple gonger (nickalicious), Monday, 24 July 2006 12:46 (nineteen years ago)

I liked the one with the skeleton guy who was some sort of cursed, failed hero. My 12 year old self remembers it as being, at the same time, fairly epic and quite poignant.

Stone Monkey (Stone Monkey), Monday, 24 July 2006 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

i now finally know what Frank Welker, a man participating in most of the programming i've seen in 25 years, looks like:

and the answer is "Gary Owens"
