What's usually in your house? Isn't one supposed to be better for certain things? Advil for aches and pains, Tylenol for fevers, or something?
Where do you stand?
― Surmounter, Monday, 27 August 2007 03:04 (eighteen years ago)
i just took 2 advils and 2 advil PM's. i know this is a lot, but it feels like someone is drilling a hole in my throat. i choose drugs.
― Surmounter, Monday, 27 August 2007 03:13 (eighteen years ago)
pamprin
― gershy, Monday, 27 August 2007 03:17 (eighteen years ago)
I routinely take 4 ibuprofen (advil/motrin,etc) at a whack. It's 800 mg, the same as a presciption Motrin. Anything less doesn't kill the pain. I'ver consulted with lots of medical professions about this, and they all say it's fine. Acetaminophen is highly toxic. People have ruined their livers by taking it with an alcoholic beverage.
― Beth Parker, Monday, 27 August 2007 03:19 (eighteen years ago)
i'm allergic to advil (and aspirin), so it's tylenol or nothing.
― Eisbaer, Monday, 27 August 2007 03:21 (eighteen years ago)
um i took acetabla with an alcoholic beverage earlier this afternoon. does that mean my liver is ruined?
― Surmounter, Monday, 27 August 2007 03:24 (eighteen years ago)
Aleve makes me spontaneously vomit! No nausea, no warning, just Linda Blair surprise special.
― Abbott, Monday, 27 August 2007 03:26 (eighteen years ago)
hahahaha... i thought aleve was supposed to be like the magic one. i feel like it's expensive though

― s1ocki, Monday, 27 August 2007 03:36 (eighteen years ago)
I always go for the ibuprofen. I will rotate with acetominophen if I have a really high fever and the ibuprofen isn't bringing the fever down by itself. I don't find acetominophen very effective, and, as mentioned above, it is more toxic to your liver.
Acetominophen is, however, the painkiller you are allowed to take during pregnancy. I once told my OB that I found it "about as effective as Lamaze breathing" for pain. He just laughed.
― Sara R-C, Monday, 27 August 2007 04:09 (eighteen years ago)
I thought I had acid reflux just from eating greasy food (which was part of it) so I went to the doctor and got an upper GI and he said "do you take a lot of Advil or Aleve?" i said yes, I get headaches and take tons. He said it was eating a hole in my stomach. He said to only take Tylenol from now on. If there's no tylenol around, I'll take ibuprofen, but mostly, have to stick to the acetominophen.
So for those Advil and Aleve addicts out there...pace yourself.
― dan selzer, Monday, 27 August 2007 05:09 (eighteen years ago)
advil/ibuprofen is the only thing that works for me, but my headaches haven't been nearly as bad lately as they used to be so i can go easy these days, knock on wood
― deej, Monday, 27 August 2007 05:26 (eighteen years ago)
My boss's best friend died when he took a few too many tylenol after waking up from a night of birthday-partying. Massive liver failure, natch.

― luriqua, Monday, 27 August 2007 06:28 (eighteen years ago)
oh my god. this is all ridiculous. died from tylenol for a hangover? i mean i've definitely done that before.
i think i've heard the thing about advil and the stomach. i've taken 6 advil in the past 24 hours. fucking doctor here i come ;/
― Surmounter, Monday, 27 August 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)
I can only take Dafalgan (which in the US would be acetaminophen)which as Sara said can only be taken when you are pregnant. I also took it when breastfeeding to alleviate the nipple pain. It helped. But it does jackshit for my migraine attacks, sadly.
― nathalie, Monday, 27 August 2007 15:21 (eighteen years ago)
Acetaminophen, as has been stated, is really bad on your liver and shouldn't be taken if you drink regularly.
That said I can't take either b/c of some other medication I take. I could take aspirin but why bother. I just don't take anything for headaches/normal aches and pains.
― Ms Misery, Monday, 27 August 2007 15:30 (eighteen years ago)
yeah what's with aspirin, it's the one i know least about. good for blood pressure or something?
well now i'm all paranoid that my liver is done for. i mean i don't take that much tylenol but i've definitely been known to take it after a hard weekend.
― Surmounter, Monday, 27 August 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)
Just don't keep taking it around the time you're taking alcohol; I think you'd know if your liver was failing. ;)
As for aspirin, it's a vaso-dilator and it works to thin your blood a bit - that is why some people take it to decrease the risk of heart disease/heart attack.
― Sara R-C, Monday, 27 August 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)
I only have aspirin, it's a classic, it's a blood thinner, it works better than anything else for me. I'm vaguely annoyed by ibuprofen, even when it works.
― kenan, Monday, 27 August 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)
xpost Yes.
interesting. i always liked the idea of having a bottle of aspirin in the house, it seems so old world. but then people complain that it isn't strong enough. i guess for your common headache?
― Surmounter, Monday, 27 August 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)
take four, that's all. Buy a big bottle.
― kenan, Monday, 27 August 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

― Ms Misery, Monday, 27 August 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)
i have aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen and aleve on hands at all times
this week both acetaminophen and aleve have helped, ibuprofen hasn't done shit, and aspirin's sort of only around as a formality
― J0hn D., Monday, 27 August 2007 17:50 (eighteen years ago)
Aspirin works best for me, esp. for headaches and muscle pain. Aleve makes me ill, acetaminophen doesn't seem to do much at all for me, I've never bothered with ibuprofen because aspirin works.
― Jaq, Monday, 27 August 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)
But yeah, don't take too much aspirin at once or you'll end up with tinnitus.
― Jaq, Monday, 27 August 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)
that's very strange about aspirin and hearing impairment
and BTW this tylenol & alcohol information has really changed my life.
not that advil + alcohol = terrific either.

I have a bit of an aspirin habit, to tell you the truth. I take a couple on a fairly regular basis, just as an adjunct to my daily pill intake. Like, a little extra heart disease prevention. Aspirin is cheap, I don't get an upset stomach from it, so why not?

i believe it can cause hearing loss
Yes, aspirin and other so-called salicylates have been associated with hearing loss and ringing in the ears, especially with high dosages or long-term use.
― deej, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 20:00 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, I've heard that (see? I heard it), but have you read a bottle of acetaminophen or ibuprofen lately? Either one, take your pick -- that shit is scary!

tylenol is the only thing that works on headaches for me. advil works for other weird aches that I get (joint pain, back pain, mainly).
― akm, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 21:42 (seventeen years ago)
Is acetaminophen the same thing as paracetamol or something different?
Paracetamol is pretty bad on the liver in high doses, and as few as 10 tablets in one go can apparently kill (thats less than a packet!)
But I'm here to tell you it mixes ok with heavy drinking... I mean ok, my liver's not 100% healthy but I'm not cirrocic or dead or anything, so.
― Trayce, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 22:03 (seventeen years ago)
Is acetaminophen the same thing as paracetamol
It is. And yeah, for real, after you're done reading the health risks on the label, it's mind blowing that the shit is even legal.
― kenan, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 22:19 (seventeen years ago)
Trayce! No! Do not mix booze with Tylenol. From upthread:
― kenan, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 22:21 (seventeen years ago)
This is all very bad news. I am now trying to remember every instance of Tylenol + alcohol! Why are we all not more aware of this? Surely by now this should have been naturalized to the level of common sense.
― fields of salmon, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 22:48 (seventeen years ago)
I was v. aware of it
― Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 22:51 (seventeen years ago)
One evening of listening to nursing school pharmacology lecture kind of put me off acetominophen forever. Luckily, I prever Advil, as I find acetominophen entirely useless for pain relief.
xp Trayce, DO NOT mix acetominophen with alcohol. It's good that your liver is still fine. Keep it that way!
― Sara R-C, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 22:53 (seventeen years ago)

nah, tylenol with codeine's where it's at. it makes me feel like this: http://a836.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/112/s_634020aa78c768cfaeae1a5cfae18133.jpg
― yungblut, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 23:31 (seventeen years ago)
I love aspirin so much I don't really feel a need to use anything else. Sometimes it's the only thing that will help me get to sleep when the OTC sleeping pills aren't working. And yes, I do take it after heavy drinking sometimes. It helped me survive many a hangover. I don't take it every day, though.
I took an overdose of aspirin when I was a teenager and yes it did make my ears all funny (tinnitus). There was ringing in my ears. But it didn't do any permanent damage to my hearing, thankfully.
― Bimble, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 23:36 (seventeen years ago)
tylenol #3 doesn't do shit unless you have a cough and fever. codeine does nothing for pain.

Im sure I've gone into my regular codiene/paracetamol/booze roundabout before. I know its bad. I dont take TONS but I take it daily. Long story. Yes, I know its bad. I drink a LOT of water, have vitamins, regular liver testing, etc. I know I'm doing myself no favours. But but but. Lets just say doctors be aware of my shiz and its ... monitored, if nothing else.
― Trayce, Thursday, 31 July 2008 02:25 (seventeen years ago)
the acetaminophen and alcohol is more damaging to your liver than the codeine and alcohol are.
― chicago kevin, Thursday, 31 July 2008 02:34 (seventeen years ago)
Ibuprofen has never worked for me for anything except to prevent hangovers (I sometimes take two with one or two large glasses of water RIGHT before I go to sleep when I'm mad crazy drunk and I wake up feeling like I've gotten the best sleep in years). Everything I've read says ibuprofen is totally fine with booze but NOT tylenol or aspirin.
Also, a month ago I drank a bottle of yellow tail shiraz and woke up with a massive headache (which needed to go away so i could get to the pride parade holla!) which stayed for four hours until I took two Excedrin and a bottle of water. I've been a big fan of Excedrin since, recommending it to multiple people.

― surm, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 01:53 (fourteen years ago)

― svend, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 02:22 (fourteen years ago)
― surm, Tuesday, February 21, 2012 8:53 PM (31 minutes ago)
aleve is a little more potent than advil and is longer lasting, too. there's not a really big difference between the two though -i'd probably say either is okay, unless you've had problems with things like stomach ulcers, then i'd prefer ibuprofen. what is the pain like? does it come and go, or does it not go away? how long has this been going on?
― ploppawheelie V (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 02:38 (fourteen years ago)
it used to come and go more but lately it's been something i keep trying to stretch out every day. it's not severe pain, just a consistent ache.
― surm, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 02:50 (fourteen years ago)
what have you taken for it?
― ploppawheelie V (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 02:52 (fourteen years ago)
just advil so far, sometimes 3 at a time if it's rough. and ativan/klonopin occasionally if i am feeling stressed in general, which often accompanies the neck pain.
― surm, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 02:59 (fourteen years ago)
We old people have more muscle aches and pains than fevers. Ibuprofen (generic Advil) is better for reducing different kinds of musclar and joint inflammation, so that's what we always have around the house.
― Aimless, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 03:03 (fourteen years ago)
I love Advil so much. SO MUCH! It does for all my dance/workout pains, and reduces inflammation in injured feet and ankles pretty fast.
― drawn to them like a moth toward a spanakopita (Laurel), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 03:08 (fourteen years ago)
Also on the several occasions when I've had vomitous amts of pain from dental abcesses & inflamed nerves, Advil is the only thing I've found to kill it.
― drawn to them like a moth toward a spanakopita (Laurel), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 03:09 (fourteen years ago)
none of these things do anything for me, neither do stronger painkillers tho
― iatee, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 03:09 (fourteen years ago)
advil will tackle fever pretty well too but yeah for inflammatory pain, NSAIDS like ibuprofen are a good bet. xxxxp
