The Pick-Up Artist

Has anyone been following this? I really liked Scott and kinda hate Pradeep so I was disappointed by tonight's elimination. (Still, they're probably right that Scott doesn't have "pick-up artist" in his personality makeup.)

(But I'm a little curious how legal it is to put hidden cameras in clubs and show the results on cable TV.)

Sundar, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 02:18 (eighteen years ago)

you never seen "cops" before?

hstencil, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 02:20 (eighteen years ago)

I've never watched it, actually, but I see your point.

Sundar, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 02:26 (eighteen years ago)

I don't entirely understand the legal principle on which COPS is allowed to do that, actually.

Abbott, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 02:48 (eighteen years ago)

people sign releases to be on television

sometimes the faces on cops are blurred

Kerm, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 02:52 (eighteen years ago)

shoot first, obtain legal release later

I so want to punch this guy's face in.

I'm just pig-biting mad that Mystery is giving away all of my Super-Seduction NLP techniques away for free on VH-1.

Never again will I be able to use the line "What else do you have to offer besides your good looks?"...or my famous move of lightly stroking the inside of a comely lass' arm.

Plus, jerk stole all of my acronyms, e.g. "I.O.D." (indication of disinterest)

The interview with Mystery on Salon was just great.

I am bummed that Spoon quit because he was the best guy there. I guess I'm rooting for Joe-who-seems-gay.

Joe-who-seems-gay

I got the same impression.

Whoa, I just read that interview. I'm glad that you mentioned it.

Anyone who says "That just doesn't fit into my reality" a half-dozen times during the course of an interview is automatically dud. It reminds me of some of the worst conversations that I've had with coked-up people.

The "peacock" thing-- wow. So, women find it intriguingly attractive if you dress like a combination of Jamiroquai and "What's Going On"-era Linda Perry?

And the "neg" thing, I think, sadly does work on many people (regardless of gender or sexual orientation, etc.) I've witnessed it in action, or heard people on the receiving end testify to its effects. But really that's just a sad commentary on human relations in general, as well as ultimately testifying to peoples' insecurities and desperation to be liked, even by (or in some cases, especially by) people who treat them lousily. To exploit that is fucked-up...

The intro to the article mentions that Tony Robbins is one of his idols. Tony Robbins has a background in NLP, and his "personal power" industry is based to a large degree on LGAT-type techniques. Nice combination of cheesy and creepy.

The part that bothers me the most about all of this stuff is that it portrays women and men as if they are completely alien creatures from one another, or at least different species; such that each must resort to weird strategies and all manner of contrived spontaneity in order to establish interactions with each other. And I find the biological reductionist stereotyping of the sexes to be insulting and dehumanizing; it completely fails to acknowledge all of the subtleties, nuances, and individual idiosycrasies that come into play during actual human interaction.

I suppose that if one were merely concerned with racking up notches on their bedpost, they could employ some of the strategies that the "Mystery" dude endorses, and given enough effort or whatever, one would find people willing to take the bait, so to speak. But, as for actually meeting someone who you are interested in having a serious relationship with, to employ all these gimmicks and so forth seems very misguided...and sad.
