I wonder if religious reasons would be encompassed in "I'm high on something else."

jaymc, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

I'd like a "Reasons I Wish I didn't Drink" poll.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

oh good call jaymc, i forgot to add "religious reasons" (yes, "high on something else" will do)

get bent, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

Ms Misery OTM.

Bill in Chicago, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

I do drink alcohol, but never so much that I get drunk. You did in fact have an option that fit me perfectly: "don't like the feeling of being drunk."
Hooray!

Øystein, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 17:02 (eighteen years ago)

Do you want some more booze?

o Yes! ^_^
o No. *_;

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

Oystein gave my answer. I'm drinking less and less as time passes.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 17:55 (eighteen years ago)

Me too. I had two beers on Friday and that was the first time in a couple of weeks. I still love drinking but the older I get the less quickly I recover and if I drink frequently, it just goes right to my waistline. For that reason, we don't keep it around the house anymore except for specific events and I don't go out to bars as much as I used to. Actually, I've lost 5 pounds in the last two months solely from not drinking beer several times a week.

Bill in Chicago, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

i don't drink to get drunk anymore. i only drink when i'm out if i am thirsty. maybe some wine w dinner.

cutty, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

In a way I'm dreading the upcoming week in Amsterdam hanging out with friends. There's no way I'm going to be able to keep up, and won't really try, but on the other hand this is probably going to be as close as I ever get to the "beer tour of Belgium" I dreamed about for years.

....this is what i've been aiming for these days, somewhat unsuccessfully.

river wolf, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

I don't not drink, I just don't drink very often.

I was a pretty bad binge drinker, did a lot of stupid things (like driving while borderline passed out), finally got caught, gave it up completely for a long time. Started having a drink now and then, but I've actually learned my limits and how to hit the 'fun spot' rather than just getting raging drunk and then miserable.

Still live without mass transit, will not chance getting pulled over after even a drink.

milo z, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

"in recovery" and "cold turkey" are kind of mutually exclusives. Alcoholics in recovery also don't use the term "dry" to describe themselves. I associate "cold turkey" with a dry drunk who quits on his own without any help.

Sorry to nitpick, but it's true.

if you don't drink alcohol:can i have yours?

gershy, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 03:08 (eighteen years ago)

I like that this thread lacks options that claim you're actually drinking but, like, not THAT much. Don't friggin vote if you drink. I sure didn't.

mh, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 03:14 (eighteen years ago)

Let the non-drinkers speak, I say.

Bimble, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 03:35 (eighteen years ago)

My father was (is it proper to use past tense or is it 'once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic?) an alcoholic for a long time before I was born (he is about 40 years older than I am, so he had time for this) but quit around the time he met my mom. I avoid the stuff cos I fear that I am my father's son and I'd rather not tempt fate. Since I never grew up around it and none of my friends are really big drinkers, this hasn't been too difficult.

m bison, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 04:39 (eighteen years ago)

I could choose about three or four of those reasons. Both my parents are alcoholics, as was one of my grandfathers. My own drinking practices became a bit problematic a couple of years ago, so I slowed right down because I don't want to be like them. Didn't give up altogether mind you. But it is fair to say I had become a fucking annoying, obnoxious drunk, if not an alcoholic. That wasn't one of your poll options though.

gem, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 13:45 (eighteen years ago)

wife preg, so I'm not drinking with her.

pj, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

Good man!

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

not trying to pat myself on the back...been meaning to give it a break so it's win-win.

pj, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

how about i'm not drinking because i'm at work?

darraghmac, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

If it's good enough for US astronauts, it's sure as hell good enough for you.

libcrypt, Thursday, 30 August 2007 04:59 (eighteen years ago)

can we just tie this thread into MAD MEN on AMC and point out that white people have lived off the booze for about, I dunno, a millenia or so?

El Tomboto, Thursday, 30 August 2007 05:27 (eighteen years ago)

I mean jesus didn't turn wine into water, you know what I'm saying

El Tomboto, Thursday, 30 August 2007 05:28 (eighteen years ago)

El Tomboto, Thursday, 30 August 2007 05:29 (eighteen years ago)

I'm pregnant, hence the no drinking policy here.

nathalie, Thursday, 30 August 2007 09:42 (eighteen years ago)

I've been only been drunk a handful of times in the last five years. I don't really drink to get drunk and I no longer find myself in any situation where I might have more than a couple of drinks. Also, I can't afford/choose not to spend my money on casual drinking.

admrl, Thursday, 30 August 2007 10:16 (eighteen years ago)

there should be a 'I AM TIRED OF BEING DESPERATE FOR THE LOO ON THE LONG BUS RIDE HOME' option (this is only a prob when drinking pints tho)

blueski, Thursday, 30 August 2007 10:23 (eighteen years ago)

None of the above really applies to me, I simply lost the taste for it.

leigh, Thursday, 30 August 2007 11:42 (eighteen years ago)

there should be a "sick of passing out on the bus and waking up in zone 6" option too. know too many people who've done it

sanskrit, Thursday, 30 August 2007 11:47 (eighteen years ago)

after two weeks at the edinburgh festival i have lost the taste for booze completely

and by "lost the taste for" i mean "really enjoy two very nice cocktails, max"

wayyyyy too many nights of "a pint of the 1664, please" - again and again and again

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 30 August 2007 11:51 (eighteen years ago)

oh god i love booze

Mark C, Thursday, 30 August 2007 11:52 (eighteen years ago)

i have some sloe gin at home. it's like liquid pudding.

blueski, Thursday, 30 August 2007 11:54 (eighteen years ago)

my problem these days is that in order to feel any real effect from booze i have to:

1) spend a lot of money
2) get very sick the next morning

:/

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 30 August 2007 12:01 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Monday, 3 September 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

It's complicated. The most direct explanation is that I wasn't very social at age 14-17 or so when most people get into the habit of drinking and by the time I was going to parties etc, nobody was trying to prove anything or peer pressure anything, so it really never was necessary - with an overlap period in between where I was just being stubborn. Flash forward to the present day (age 25) and I just really have never seen much of a reason to start drinking (nothing against anyone who does), combined with the fact that I'm convinced I'd be a really annoying drunk - sarcastic, maudlin, and needy. Also: history of alcoholism in family.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 04:58 (eighteen years ago)

Who is "Oystein"?!

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 05:00 (eighteen years ago)

This is my third day off the sauce, having decided to try for a baby.

*rumpie*, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 08:10 (eighteen years ago)

yay! babies are way better than alcohol.

sunny successor, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 14:34 (eighteen years ago)

says the person who doesnt drink. reason? i go from zero to really drunk. theres no in between.

sunny successor, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

I don't like the taste mainly. And the whole quantity thing, I dunno how people can drink 3 or 4 pints of beer in a couple of hours. I sometimes drink spirits with coke, but I've kinda gone off that lately.

jel --, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 17:03 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Where's "Because I couldn't stand the hangovers"?

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 02:20 (eighteen years ago)

i cant believe 28 people on ilx dont drink.

sunny successor, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 02:42 (eighteen years ago)

I'll have a drink sometimes - usually to unwind after a long day - but my social drinking virtually stopped after I left NYC and lived in cities where I had to drive everywhere. My tolerance is so lightweight that even half a beer can impair my judgment. So I tend to not drink when I go out.

But I've also realized that I don't much like being drunk anymore. I can be a pretty self-conscious drunk; I tend to either talk too much or not at all. It's easier to just drink water or soda, or have one drink and make it last all night.

mike a, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 03:19 (eighteen years ago)

why are all these doctor guys around here like in their 20s. i always think of doctors as being 40 or older.

deeznuts, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 04:31 (eighteen years ago)

Øystein, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 06:52 (eighteen years ago)

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 15:26 (eighteen years ago)

I'm unsurprised that no one on ILX is high on life.

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 15:26 (eighteen years ago)

why be high on life when you can be high on whiskey?

ken c, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

"Or cocaine?"

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

I just started college and I think I may actually drink less, at least for a while, because I've realized that drinking and getting high and going to parties aren't actually inherently fun; it's just that I had really awesome friends I did all those things with. the kind of friends who were just as much fun to hang out with while sober, or while hungover the next morning. need to find some of those people here.

bernard snowy, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, OTM. I've been slowly realizing the tangy part of that, the friends part, lately.
