Almost all of these are better than anything Mann's done.

I finally saw Crimson Tide all the way through - it's pretty awesome. "Angry Dudes On A Boat" sounds lame, but Denzel and Hackman work.

But "Man on Fire" is a goddamned masterpiece.

Enemy of the State gets an honorary mention for being the movie where his meth addiction just took over, I think.

so there's this whole 'vulgar auteurism' thing going around the last couple weeks, championing Scott, Michael Bay, etc, and Nick Pinkerton has had enough.

A couple of years ago I interviewed Dave Kehr, a self-professed adherent to Bazin’s pronouncement, and auteurist working very much in Sarris’ classical humanist vein. Kehr had the following to say about the not-yet-proclaimed Vulgar Auteurs:

“The directors who really rub me the wrong way right now are people like Tony Scott and Michael Bay… these kind of macho guys who go out there and do a million shots and beat up the audience with them… I have seen some people defending Tony Scott, like the Cinema Scope guys have kind of adopted him as their favorite Hollywood director, I think just out of sheer perversity, because… I don’t see anything in those. It’s just trash to me, one shot after another, it’s just nonsense. But he does have his little following.”

I try to think the best of my fellow critics’ motives, to believe that their enthusiasms aren’t spurred by sheer contrarian perversity. (Although in the case of the elevation of a piece of shit like Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, you have to wonder…) When I read the likes of Vishnevetsky’s “Smearing the Senses” and Christoph Huber and Mark Peranson’s “World Out of Order: Tony Scott’s Vertigo,” I must believe that their authors are speaking for the greatness of Scott out of a real sense of conviction, however incapable I am of agreeing with or even comprehending the arguments therein, however much I would have, retrospectively, preferred to have thrown the money I spent seeing Domino and The Taking of Pelham 1, 2, 3 out the window of a moving cab instead.

Started watching the Pelham remake last night. I thought it would be a reasonably entertaining diversion by default. Visually, the credit sequence was jarringly ugly. Once that settled down, Travolta took over. Robert Shaw's wry, existential cool was gone: loud, pushy, profane. Lasted about 15 minutes and bailed.

Revenge is still a favourite; breaks my heart that people don’t love it. The whole ‘two different versions’ deal is a pain in the arse though, I wish you could get one with all the footage.

Glad to see this getting a domestic release (it was issued in the UK last year, I think) but where is a blu or 4K special edition for The Last Boy Scout?

It's only been issued in bare-bones double feature or triple feature discs so far and a souped up edition like this for it would be a day one purchase for me.

Given the recent Willis news, a deluxe LBS reissue would probably be very welcome. I'd buy one, too. Right now I have it on a DVD twofer with Last Man Standing.

True Romance has been one of my favorite movies of all time but I rewatched after a long hiatus recently and i got so annoyed by the score i turned it off. it never used to bother me!

wow Beverly Hills Cop II stiiiiiiiinks. painfully unfunny as a comedy and narratively adrift as a cops-n-heisters movie. not even much fun in terms of overdriven maximalist stylization.

Unstoppable probably my favorite of the ones I've seen? tho based on the results here I guess I should give Last Boy Scout and True Romance a try.
