Hal Hartley - the poll

Ned: I want adventure. I want romance.
Bill: Ned, there is no such thing as adventure. There's no such thing as romance. There's only trouble and desire.
Ned: Trouble and desire.
Bill: That's right. And the funny thing is, when you desire something you immediately get into trouble. And when you're in trouble you don't desire anything at all.
Ned: I see.
Bill: It's impossible.
Ned: It's ironic.
Bill: It's a fucking tragedy is what it is, Ned.

I've included the shorts because I know that's about as much Hal as some people can take...

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 18:48 (seventeen years ago)

I'll probably never get over Trust. I miss Adrienne Shelley. :(

Trust.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 19:15 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, obv. Sorry, what was the question?

Laurel, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 19:16 (seventeen years ago)

I mean, the only option I really clocked was Trust anyway.

Laurel, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 19:17 (seventeen years ago)

I haven't seen Trust or The Unbelievable Truth, but I sorta doubt I'd change my Simple Men vote

gabbneb, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 19:25 (seventeen years ago)

It's Simple Men for me, followed very closely behind by Trust and the The Unbelievable Truth. I really like pretty much everything he's done though (that I've seen).

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 23:13 (seventeen years ago)

i voted henry fool for the epicness but the unbelievable truth is really good too

jhøshea, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 23:16 (seventeen years ago)

Rent that "unfinished films" DVD someday, that'll change quick.

Surviving Desire by a short distance, though those shorts from around that period are in competition. (I can never ride the L train without thinking about the Williamsburg real estate one, or the literalized street fights a couple shorts down the line...)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Friday, 7 September 2007 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

It's going to come down to a coin toss to decide between Simple Men and Flirt.

Anna, Friday, 7 September 2007 23:04 (seventeen years ago)

Heads - Simple Men
Tails - Flirt

Anna, Friday, 7 September 2007 23:04 (seventeen years ago)

Tails - Flirt - I bet the suspense was killing the whole internet.

Anna, Friday, 7 September 2007 23:05 (seventeen years ago)

That coin has good taste.

nabisco, Friday, 7 September 2007 23:11 (seventeen years ago)

I adore Flirt, but I'm never quite sure if it's just my drama geek side thrilling to the possibities of multiple stagings and interpretations. I'm not truly sure it matters in this case anyway.

Anna, Friday, 7 September 2007 23:33 (seventeen years ago)

wow yeah Trust. didn't know he had that many movies though

tremendoid, Friday, 7 September 2007 23:46 (seventeen years ago)

You people just haven't seen The Unbelievable Truth, have you?

rogermexico., Saturday, 8 September 2007 18:00 (seventeen years ago)

henry fool ftw

kenan, Saturday, 8 September 2007 18:04 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Saturday, 8 September 2007 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

There's something really fascinating about Edie Falco in Trust -- she doesn't do the intentionally stilted Hartley acting style at all, but she still fits and works in it. Her conversation with Donovan in the bar is really great.

nabisco, Sunday, 9 September 2007 00:12 (seventeen years ago)

Ha, I also like the random placement in Trust of Hartley's favorite literal-violence trick -- i.e., Donovan randomly punching people on his way out of the job interview.

nabisco, Sunday, 9 September 2007 00:13 (seventeen years ago)

Better dance break: silent alley Broadway break in Surviving Desire, or Lowensohn in this?

nabisco, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 18:19 (seventeen years ago)

Simple Men

also, it is a tragedy that Martin Donovan is not mine.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 18:22 (seventeen years ago)

he's looking a bit craggy lately – I hope Paul Rudd doesn't look like him in 15 years.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 18:32 (seventeen years ago)

I know, look at his skin in this picture!

nabisco, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 18:35 (seventeen years ago)

The one on the left isn't bad.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 18:36 (seventeen years ago)

That was yet another movie where we're meant to feel bad because NOOOO something painful and/or dangerous is happening to SARAH POLLEY -- in beaten-up / horrifying-spinal-surgery terms she was like the female Jared Leto for a while there.

nabisco, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 18:39 (seventeen years ago)

thirteen years pass...

I finally watched Henry Fool. is it mean that my ultimate feeling was "this is what Clerks would have been like if Kevin Smith went to grad school"?

it bangs for thee (Simon H.), Saturday, 14 November 2020 15:13 (four years ago)
