Is a man ever too old to wear DMs?
Are DMs seen as 'rubbish and naff' now?
What do women think about men who wear DMs, I like them but I also want to be fancied, and would appreciate to know if I should get rid of them

Carlos, Thursday, 6 September 2007 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

What does "DM" mean?

Tuomas, Thursday, 6 September 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

doc marten's. they still make those?

fritz, Thursday, 6 September 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

Whoa, do your own viral marketing research!

Masonic Boom, Thursday, 6 September 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

xpost

The associate director of my department wears them. With his khakis and dress shirts. The look fine, just sturdy work boots really. He doesn't come of as a douche to me but I can't speak for others.

Fritz, why would they have stopped?

Ms Misery, Thursday, 6 September 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

i just never see them anymore

fritz, Thursday, 6 September 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

You are too old now, surely.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 6 September 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

I prefer them to those fawn suede work boots, if that's what yr asking -- pretty sure they're timeless in that sense. Their extensive "brogue" shoe line is kind of shit, though, and never surpasses "high-school church outfit" in level of formality. Ie they are just fine as casual shoes/boots for grown-ups but shouldn't be disguised as "nice" or semi formal wear, I opine.

Laurel, Thursday, 6 September 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

too old to see?

fritz, Thursday, 6 September 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

i've got a phatty 2/23/95 Roseland DAUD to trade

gabbneb, Thursday, 6 September 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

lol I'm wearing DMs right now. I only really wear them for work these days though, wear trainers most of the time otherwise.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 6 September 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

That said if I were like "heeey I like the cut of that guy's jib" and then noted he was wearing, say, DM "brogues" w/ a suit, I would quietly resolve to see how he felt about nicer shoes in future but totally still take the bait.

Laurel, Thursday, 6 September 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

xxpost

too old to see?

To notice? I was joking.

I've only seen them on my AD as of late but then I usually am not checking out people's feet.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 6 September 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

How can the orig 10-eye be anything but badical?? It's the thicker-soled "fashion" line of theirs that I despise.

Laurel, Thursday, 6 September 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

Mine are thick-soled but are the classic style shoes, no brogues here, no sir. Why I need thick-soled shoes when I'm 6'3"-ish without shoes is beyond me, my wife picked them. I would have just got the normal shoes.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 6 September 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

Thank you, I would like to maybe give Chelsea boots a go though am scared to buy and then regret it

Carlos, Thursday, 6 September 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

Those are two completely different looks.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 6 September 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

Chelsea boots waaaay hottter than DMs. But they've got to be the zip-up kind, the elasticated kind are a bit half-hearted.

Masonic Boom, Thursday, 6 September 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

also need to be wearing relatively skinny pants for beatle type boots, unless they're white and your name is Lemmy

fritz, Thursday, 6 September 2007 16:38 (eighteen years ago)

I swoon for Chelsea boots, even the slightly heartier and more English-countryside-y elastic gore kind.

Laurel, Thursday, 6 September 2007 16:40 (eighteen years ago)

Watch out that the cuban heel isn't too high, or that can speak of short-arse insecurity. They should be just enough to lift you out of the mud, but no more.

Masonic Boom, Thursday, 6 September 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

I have worn nothing else for 'proper' shoes since I was 13 or so. I always have a pair of black and a couple of pairs of brown on the go at any one time. I am now 45. I haven't had a pair of DM boots since the 1980s.

Am I too old - who cares? part of being old is not caring anymore.

What do women think about men who wear DMs

I know of no universally held opinion. Maybe I should ask some women?

I like them but I also want to be fancied, and would appreciate to know if I should get rid of them

I would consider the DMs as not necessarily the most important issue that a woman would consider. But maybe I'm wrong here...

Dr.C, Thursday, 6 September 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

These are totally back!

Raw Patrick, Thursday, 6 September 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

This woman would take DMs over Chelsea Boots. Don't like anything feminine on my men. (Alhough I'll take some masculine with my women, thank you.)

In general I don't like any man who looks like he actively cultivates a "look". General thought towards decent dressing and appearance, yes. But more effort than that. No thanks.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 6 September 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't been able to break in my newest pair (purchased in January or February). I got so used to the glove-like feel of my ratty four-year old pair, these 8-eyes are uncomfortable.

milo z, Thursday, 6 September 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

The sole was separating all around and they were splattered with paint but why did I have to throw that old pair away? Why God Why?

milo z, Thursday, 6 September 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

I don't even know what Doc Martens look like.

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 6 September 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

You should post that on the cultural touchstones thread Curtis.

That said if I were like "heeey I like the cut of that guy's jib" and then noted he was wearing, say, DM "brogues" w/ a suit, I would quietly resolve to see how he felt about nicer shoes in future but totally still take the bait.

-- Laurel,

I had a boyfriend who did this, I suggested buying more shoes (he only had two pairs, so I could suggest it as a practicality) and his ideas of 'nicer shoes' were just as awful, if not worse. Then again, Dr C is a well-dressed man, so I guess it depends how you work it.

Anna, Thursday, 6 September 2007 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

haha, if I'm ever in a professional atmosphere or have to dress up, I plan on wearing good ol' DM 'combat boots' instead of dress shoes. Shined, maybe.

You can get away with it if it's clearly a choice, right?

milo z, Thursday, 6 September 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

x-post so DM shoes with suits are a no-no? Not even highly polished, un-scuffed ones?

I do have a pair of posh shoes for wearing with a dinner suit - even I wouldn't wear DMs with that. I hate those shoes - they pinch my wide feet (not a problem with DMs) horribly - but thankfully they only come out a couple of times a year for posh dos.

Then again, Dr C is a well-dressed man

Thank-you, Anna :) If only it were true.

Dr.C, Thursday, 6 September 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

Well, and assuming I liked the suit. xp

Laurel, Thursday, 6 September 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

i read an article about docs making a comeback again because they were worn by all the models in some fall 2007 fashion show. I have docs I wear all the time, but none have the yuck yellow stitching.

Yerac, Thursday, 6 September 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

i think you just have to wear them like you're not worried about being too old for them

emsk, Thursday, 6 September 2007 21:52 (eighteen years ago)

I was 14 when I got my first pair and I was v. excited to see that they were 'oil repellent.' I went out right away to find a motor oil puddle, and when I stood in it, I was disappointed to see the oil didn't zip away from the periphery of the soles. I am too literal sometimes.

Abbott, Thursday, 6 September 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 6 September 2007 22:04 (eighteen years ago)

I don't even know what Doc Martens look like.

Dude surely youve seen pics of me in them. Maybe not, I guess thats my feet.

I love my Docs. Ive only ever needed to own 2 pair in almost 20 years. They are workhorses. And the sturdyness helps with my foot problems - I have to wear orthotics and things, DMs are great for foor support.

Trayce, Friday, 7 September 2007 09:02 (eighteen years ago)

Don't you find the sole wears through, Trayce? Mine become very thin after about 3-4 years.

Dr.C, Friday, 7 September 2007 09:04 (eighteen years ago)

Do you know where you can get real leather ones? Not coated in that horrible plastic crap?
And what is good way for getting rid of yellow stitching? Just smother it in black polish?

Carlos, Friday, 7 September 2007 09:11 (eighteen years ago)

Dr C: well eventually my first pair wore a bit yeah, and the tops split open which is what I find goes first (I never polish my boots, I'm terrible).

Latest pair I bought in Stafford in 1998 and theyre still in one piece!

Trayce, Friday, 7 September 2007 09:47 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe the Australian import ones have better soles! For going walkabout and all that...I think the loyal British DM-buying public should be told!

Dr.C, Friday, 7 September 2007 09:54 (eighteen years ago)

Well no I mean I bought them in Stafford! In the UK! :)

Trayce, Friday, 7 September 2007 09:56 (eighteen years ago)

(Dont ask what the hell I was doing in Stafford... lordy)

Trayce, Friday, 7 September 2007 09:56 (eighteen years ago)

Oh right. I bet there's a Stafford in Australia though. I've been to Ipswich and Richmond in Oz.

Do you have rellys in Stafford - there's no other reason to go there. Wait...I suppose there's pottery.

Dr.C, Friday, 7 September 2007 09:58 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, the proper answer to any of these "am I too old for...?" threads is that if you are worrying about it, then yes, you are too old. Not on an "if you have to ask, lady..." level but on an "if you're insecure about wearing something, then you probably won't be able to pull off the look." level.

Masonic Boom, Friday, 7 September 2007 10:53 (eighteen years ago)

i am on to my 5th (6th?) pair in 15 years, these are 10-hole steelies, because the 10-hole non-steelies had that horrid stamp on the side. they totally need a polish and a new pair of laces though.

i don't understand the yellow stitching hatred, i heart it.

i am sad that DMs are now made in china though.

CarsmileSteve, Friday, 7 September 2007 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

I think I have 3 pairs right now. Boots for the snow, some oxfords with heels that I wear to work, and some mary janes which i love. They make all of these without the yellow stitching, you just have to look.
