i think it's all about harmony, a balance of utility and panache. take michael dundee. the leather vest sans shirt with bone and tooth accessories, while perhaps de rigeur when outwitting drug lords in the outback or tossing back lager with donk, are equally at home at an upscale manhattan coctail party with that stupid bitch reporter he inexplicably has fallen for.

there's nothing wrong with zippers--they're not super-blatant once the boots are on with pants (i'm assuming you'd wear them with pants rather than a sundress).

Have any of the Chicago dudes ever been in that giant Western-wear store on Chicago Ave. near Ashland, that seems mainly to cater to Mexican dudes?

i've heard really good things about that place from L, who used to shop for a living (theater costuming), so she knows her stuff.

When I passed it on Friday, Orvis - just off of Michigan Ave. at about Ontario - had signs up for a fall sale.

Search for them as "chelsea boots" or "elastic paddock boots". Although beware that with the latter you will got lots of proper equestrian-y things that you won't like, but you can still get some interesting results that might work. (Sometimes also called "stock boots" but that's a terrible google result.)

I like the patterns of the Penguin shirts but still have this holdover indie guilt that keeps me from wearing any clothing that has logos or brand names on it. I do have one Penguin shirt that I wear because Sarah got it for me as a present.

It isn't even so much indie guilt as it is dad guilt, like "I already PAID for the SHIRT, why should I give them FREE ADVERTISING?"

I think the idea is that you can own three suits, that you can wear the black one year-round, the gray one in spring and winter, and that those other colors are the appropriate shirts for each season.
