True story. Yeah, I was one of the dupees in this scam as well. For those of you lambasting Arin for being dumb, you don't know jack. Gerald Edwards/John MacDonald is a slick operator, the slickest I've ever seen. The fact that he was able to con 80 well educated people is proof of that.

Read up on the psychology of social influence and human behavior and you'll understand how he did it. I think the story is heavily embellished but not fictional. People are amazingly dumb, including people with advanced professional education and etc. I recall the story of some bigtime research scientist at a major university who wound up committing suicide or some such after wiring hundreds of thousands to a 419 dolla choppa.

Needless to say I don't think this story is made up AT ALL. Some of the dumbest people I know are graduates of elite law schools; and junior associates at fancy-ass firms are commonly asked to deliver more with less information than this crowd of dupees. They were foolish, but believably and typically so for young lawyers, not retarded or lazy.

the first couple of results in my google link are the federal court complaints filed by the story's author and seven others against the Alulawhatever property company for contract fraud.

I'm just assuming eight people wouldn't go to the trouble of filing in federal court just to keep up a one-shot hoax story in a free local weekly.

Oh right I didn't realise the author's name was the same as whoever filed the complaint, fair enough
