Need some sage advice here. I have a 94 Camry with +250,000 miles on it. I've put more than $2,000 into it over the last 2 years just to keep it running. It's just broken down again. I'm tired of pouring money into this car and having something else fall off every summer, so I'm considering selling it. I need the ILX Hivemind on this. Here are my options:

OptionVotes
no repairs, tow back to my apartment & list "FOR SALE, WILL NOT RUN" (~$120)4
parts & labor to get it running long enough to get back to my apartment, at which point I'll SELL IT(~$300) 2
parts & labor for a FULL REPAIR (~$800) 1

Where is option for "charge ten bucks a head to let local high schoolers beat the everliving shit out of it with baseball bats and hatchets"?

In my experience, Camrys from the early-mid 90's don't have the staying power of their mid-late 80's counterparts. Put as little more money into it as possible and buy a 1982 Mercedes 300 Turbo Diesel that's been converted to run on waste vegetable oil, i.e. The Car of The Future.

Sell the damn thing...having a car like that is getting adult onset diabetes...at first it seems okay but then your vision starts to go, you lose nerve sensation in your feet...it all goes downhill. Plus it's mean to the buyer to go for option #2.

Chevy Corsicas are cheap and they have these freak engines that last FOR-EV-ER. I drove mine over 300k miles! So if you're looking for a good point-a-point-B car for a couple of years, they've been my best experience in the world of cheap beater cars.

Let me clarify that Option #2 would include making the car's short life known to the buyer.

will you buy another car?

I'd try for a trade in, if'n I was in yer shoes.

Oilyrags, Monday, 10 September 2007 02:16 (eighteen years ago)

I'm thinking trade-in, yeah.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 10 September 2007 03:15 (eighteen years ago)

You're not going to get shit for the trade-in. Just be aware of that.

I sold my truck today! For 60 percent more than what the dealer was going to give me.

I'm ditching my 1991 Camry after going through similar headaches. I'm junking mine and taking 200 cash. You could always donate it and get a deduction.

Is there a way to pretend to sell my car back to the dealer so that I can get an estimate of what they would pay for it so that I can add $1000 to it and try to sell it myself? Or can I just ask the dealer for an estimate of what it's worth? It's a nice car. I don't need another so there is no trade in. I looked at NADA and have an estimate but the range is quite large and I'm not sure what condition it is in--mileage is low. The condition is perhaps good, not excellent bc the body scratches easily. And there's a tiny chip in the windshield. (It is a black 2004 four door automatic Honda Civic EX with less than 30,000 miles). There has been body work done to it, due to slipping on ice, but no engine work.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 03:58 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe a tinyurl would work better here.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 04:46 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks for the napkin link, Hoos! I love napkin folds but before now, I was limited to a graceful linen swan.

(Do you like my SWEET MANNERS HACK?)
