it is kind of cold today! so i have put on knee socks! it is nice! but they are ones i never wear b/c they are cotton and usually i wear wool knee socks, but it is def not cold enough for wool today. but anyway, they have stripes - red, grey, blue - muted colours - i have turned them inside out so they are even more muted. i do not know how to feel about the stripes. i feel like maybe i am too old for the stripes. but not for the knee socks.
also, knee socks are apparently hott this season but i thought they were hott for many seasons previous to this season
knee socks!
― rrrobyn, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)
this could all also involve the shoe question. i will prob just wear slip-on flats. because of lazy.
but knee socks are also good at this time of year with sandals, i think, at least here in hipland and always with boots, for sure
― rrrobyn, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)
I like them too. When it finally gets cold. what kind of shoes do you wear them with?

― Ms Misery, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 18:48 (eighteen years ago)
I wore soccer socks to work yesterday because I didn't have any other clean socks.
― Will M., Tuesday, 11 September 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)
I am of daily knee-sock vintage. Eventually they would die on you and you'd have to keep pulling them up. That said, Argyle knee socks! I wouldn't mind a pair.
― Beth Parker, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 18:51 (eighteen years ago)
I worked for a woman once who wore knee socks pulled up over leggings. That was BAD.
― Beth Parker, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 18:52 (eighteen years ago)
My mom loves knee-socks but I've never understood 'em -- I need socks to keep my feet warm, when legs are covered by pants. I could reconsider if we're talking skirts, but otherwise no.
― Laurel, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)
so classic, always cute and great.
― jergïns, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)
I like the extra-warmth under pants. and like to show them off with skirts. or under tall boots if I'm not wearing tights.

knee socks are hot every season, ladies.
― hstencil, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)
I wear black silk long johns all winter, but knee socks over that would give me very warm, uh, calves. Are cold calves—calfs? even a problem? It's the nose and ears and hands and feet!
― Beth Parker, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)
Style, we're talking. Not warmth. I get it.
Haha yeah, my calves don't need the extra insulation that much. And style-wise, they're just really not my thing.
― Laurel, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 18:59 (eighteen years ago)
yeah, i can see that they're def my thing. yes, usually with skirts. and with pants even. and even with tights (not leggings - as if i wear leggings?). yeah this town gets cold as i may have mentioned in the past, 40584 times.
yes to miu miu stylexz and to miu miu bag in that pic want
― rrrobyn, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)
Although I feel like I haf seen them on Robyn and thought SQUEEE KNEE SOCKS! so I guess I only dislike them on me.
hahah xp
― Laurel, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)
haha - i'm sure you have! b/c it was december when i saw you last and it was def knee-sock weather
ok yeah i def cannot wear these striped socks with a skirt no way
― rrrobyn, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 19:12 (eighteen years ago)
i love them, but i haven't worn them for a few years. i think i'm too old for them ;_; their cuteness relies on your lolita believability so i've felt silly since passing my mid twenties
also i HATE the miu miu ones, with heels they look trendy and trashy
― bell_labs, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 19:15 (eighteen years ago)
I like the warmth they generate under my pants too.

i think montreal women have been doing this since the dawn of time i'm finally comfortable with it and obv have gone over to the dark side but that is ok
― rrrobyn, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)
I'd like to be able to wear over-the-knee socks (not tights) like these and still look winsome, but with my legs being so sturdy already, thick socks just make them chub. Plus fitting heavy socks into shoes is a no-go unless you like suitably clompy styles.

Yeah over the knee socks don't really work for me. In fact they usually don't really fit. :(

why is that girl wearing such thick socks with those shoes! christ.
i have a lot of over-the-knee socks but i have skinny calves.
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 11 September 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)
god those even manage to make the model's legs look stumpy! dnw. xpost to laurel's pic
― bell_labs, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, I have to buy large socks always always if they're going to reach over mah knees, but then feet are too big so I turn the toes under and sew 'em. It's a lot of headache.
― Laurel, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)
yeah the way those socks are bunching in those heels is why I have an aversion to this look.
― horseshoe, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)
I bought a lot of knee socks last year to go under my harness boots and/or wear as experiment but have ended up using them all for highland practice, instead. This winter I think I stick to tights & stockings.
― Laurel, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)
Maybe it's becuase since I had to wear knee socks with my high school uniform I definitely associate them with being a teenager. I think if I tried them now at 29 I'd just feel silly. I'd wear them around the house but I don't know about outside. Hmmmm. I love them so though. Maybe I'll give it a try this year and report back.
― ENBB, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)
If you wear those over-the-knee socks you have to wear only one shoe and strike a coquettish pigeon-toed pose, like the model.
― Beth Parker, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)
try it! it really does depend on the skirt/dress and the shoes too xpost haha
― rrrobyn, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, I was thinking the same. They don't fit with the heels. I love the shiny super thin knee socks with heavy pumps. (Yeah yeah, Miu Miu. STFU I'm know I am a Prada aficionada.)
Truth be told, I couldn't wear'em as I have fat legs. :-( One needs really slender legs and I sadly look like I have fat cow legs. :-(
Robyn, yeah, that bag is GREBT as well. Love it. But I think I need something else. Need? haha I don't actually. I don't really need a bag so I'll probably get some pumps. Which I can't walk in so I'll probably put'em on a pedestal and sit in front of'em just gawking at'em. :-)
― stevienixed, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)
the problem with the miu miu ones is that those shoes/socks do not work together at ALL
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 11 September 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)
that's true - they are more like men's socks - i do love those bedazzled shoes though
― rrrobyn, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)
You think? Hmm, I was more thinking of this shoe (with knee socks). Although I think the spiky ones work with the knee socks. Sort of lolita student playing hookie by quickly putting on some high heels and still wearing her uniform or something? Does that make sense AT ALL?
Also, this is sort of apropos of nothing, but Miu Miu has got to start making a new sort of ad, as they can be quite confusing: they look a bitlike the LV ads. :-(
― stevienixed, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)
someone should say something intelligent about why the kneesock/pigeon toe thing is so cute even though it's obviously wounded-bird cute. makes me think of bell's 'is she 14 or developmentally disabled' thing: can she actually walk or do you have to carry her?
― jergïns, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 19:33 (eighteen years ago)
the problem is with the socks more so than the style of shoe, it's what rrobyn said. they don't look thin enough at all, they look like men's dress socks but in a fruity color??
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 11 September 2007 19:33 (eighteen years ago)
I used to have a pair of mid-calf socks. One time I was cycling and my longish skirt hiked (?) up so you could see that I was wearing mid-calf socks. One of my teenage neighbours saw it. I felt so utterly embarassed. hahahahahahahahahahahahaha
― stevienixed, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 19:35 (eighteen years ago)
thin knee socks pwn thick ones. the thick ones are too...affected? obviously the in-style thing now and not a lasting, honorable style
― jergïns, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)
the striped socks i just took off did make me look like an idiot i will tell you that much xpost
i have this pair of really thick wool red knee socks that a friend gave me but i have never worn them out b/c they are kind of christmasy/santa-like and i think only fit in one pair shoes that i have. they are i think more like camping socks
i have just put on some navy ankle socks and they make me look like a german tourist crossed with a 14-yr-old crossed with a dork with cold feet that is me also it is raining now
― rrrobyn, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)
yes thin socks are good for knee socks even better are thin socks with a kind of lacey (but not old-lady lacy) pattern knitted into them rowr srsly

Man, I need to get on sock knitting.

major xpost - knitting knee socks is kind of a bitch. lots of intense shaping plus LOTS of yarn (a lot more than you would expect).
― molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 21:54 (eighteen years ago)
i love knee socks in theory, but don't wear them because i don't wear short enough skirts anymore. i don't think they work with something knee length, unless you have enough space between top-of-sock and knee to show some skin. (maybe if i ever lose 20 pounds....)
― Maria, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 22:10 (eighteen years ago)
see, i like them with something knee length because it doesn't look little-girly, it just looks inoffensive and possibly cutely dowdy. that tiny inch of skin is all you see, see?
― La Lechera, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 22:12 (eighteen years ago)
I am way into knee socks because: I tend to wear clunky non dainty shoes and knee socks works well with them I am very lazy and neglect shaving legs and sometimes don't want to wear tights because I want more wind whooshing around knee high boots sometimes are too much committment
I also only do black knee socks or opaque tights, and I just ordered a bunch of tights from Tabio because I like to wear socks over tights too.
― Yerac, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 22:58 (eighteen years ago)
I think there was one fall when I alway had knee hi socks on and would go home and change into addidas shorts to walk the dog and was always walking around with shorts and knee hi socks and people made comments. I think I just hate to wear pants.
― Yerac, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 23:00 (eighteen years ago)
Gang, please see previous kneesocks thread;
The Kneesocks Thread
I haven't worn them (visibly) for a few years - if I do pick it up again, would def be with knee length skirt and/or boots.
― Virginia Plain, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 00:56 (eighteen years ago)

― bell_labs, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 03:46 (eighteen years ago)
i ended up wearing knee socks today after all! it started raining like crazy and i had to go out, and i put on thin wool navy socks and boots. it was the right idea. got v rained on. hung out, dried off. drank beers & etc. watched suspiria. it was awesome. am really into super-saturated colours.
it is weird i could not find that previous knee socks thread - but i guess b/c it was one word. which is also weird b/c i sometimes make things one word but in this case did not for some reason.
aw, thanks little miss labs for legs compliments. they are maybe not as long as that pic and its wide angle makes them appear to be but i do like them, my legs. i want to buy teal knee socks.
― rrrobyn, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 05:22 (eighteen years ago)
rrrobyn + knee sox = :D
― hstencil, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 05:28 (eighteen years ago)
I love kneesocks, I guess I rock a look that works with them - that vaguely gothy/emily strange (uuuugh I know but work with me here) thing.
Ihave knee high black and white skull n crossbone ones, and some red and black stripey ones. I wear them with boots or with maryjanes, sometimes over tights.
― Trayce, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 05:31 (eighteen years ago)
But a specific type of kneesock - not like dress socks or sports ones, ew.
― Trayce, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 05:32 (eighteen years ago)
Not to keen on the patterned knee-soxors. They'd make my legs even fatter. :-(

I have been looking forward to knee sock weather too but I am also having the 'oh no I am 32 am I mutton dressed as lamb' crisis of confidence. :( :(
I'm sure I will do knee socks anyway.
― teeny, Thursday, 13 September 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)
anthropologie has some super cute and expensive socks, a couple of years ago they also had those nice thin grey over-the-knee style that you saw in the prada ads.
― teeny, Thursday, 13 September 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)
haha i get the 'mutton dressed as lamb' crisis of confidence abt them and i am 24!
my legs are strictly speaking way too fat for knee socks but i love them so I don't much care, although I think i'm moving away from bright-colour stripes toward relative subtlety.

― stevienixed, Thursday, 13 September 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)
Look YOUNG. You also look like you, but that's kinda inevitable, I guess.
Also, I noticed those Prada socks cost about 80 dollars which seems doable... Well, doable for me to ask my parents to buy me some? Should I go and buy those pumps? I walked by teh shop again. Need'em. Def need. *Casually* mentioned to my husband that I was obsessed with'em.

My roommate is a soccer ref, he has developed a knee tan. Just the space between where his shorts end and his socks begin; it's like, bronzed. It is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.
― nickalicious, Thursday, 13 September 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)
Yes, Nathalie, my sister seems to think that's a good idea as well.

the last time my mom bought me socks, she got me a shopping bag filled with brown and black trouser socks that she found when visiting my grandmother in florida. my grandma likes bargain shopping in bulk! sadly, or not so sadly, the elastic was too tight around the top of my calf and gave me a noticeable indentation there for days!
