Is the K-Mart in the poor section of your town?

Everywhere I've lived, the K-Mart has been in a poor neighborhood. All the surrounding businesses were either title loan joints or FOR LEASE. Always weeds growing up through the cracks of the parking asphalt.

In ONE town, it was in what was the jumping part of town 30+ years ago, which had been abandoned for a new mall/other commerce on the opposite side of town. In this town, it's just near the barrio (where I live, whee! Consequently I go to K-Mart for a lot of household necessities).

Is this trend present in your area or is my sample size just too small?

We don't have a K-Mart but the Tar-jay is in the affluent part of town.

Hurting 2, Friday, 14 September 2007 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

oh wait, I just realized we do technically have a kmart. It's on the highway but within city limits.

Hurting 2, Friday, 14 September 2007 18:40 (eighteen years ago)

All the K-Marts were shut down and then reopened with Sears or something, right?

Either way I don't even know where/if a K-Mart is here.

Ms Misery, Friday, 14 September 2007 18:40 (eighteen years ago)

The ones I have seen stayed the same (did not close down) but did get signs with the new 'big K' logo. All the buildings are still grody and have hell of stained scratches in the linoleum.

Abbott, Friday, 14 September 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

I live in the 99-cent store district

Hurting 2, Friday, 14 September 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

Local K-Marts closed down here about ten years ago. Before that, the one in the middle of town was in an okay area. It was pretty middle-class when the store opened (before I was born) and slowly trended downward over the years. Later on they opened a Super K or Big K or whatever the enormous one was in a new development south of town.

Central K-Mart was the last place I remember seeing a layaway counter where you dropped off whatever you wanted to buy and they held it there.

milo z, Friday, 14 September 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

They still have that here!

Abbott, Friday, 14 September 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

I was somewhere recently with a layaway but I can't remember where. . .

Ms Misery, Friday, 14 September 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

Ross & Marshall's have them too

Abbott, Friday, 14 September 2007 18:51 (eighteen years ago)

does K-Mart still have blue light specials?

carne asada, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

My local KMart is in a perfectly decent neighborhood, but they never have anything on the shelves, and the store is always grotty.

luna, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

K-Marts are so gross and dirty and disorganized. They're operating in bankruptcy but I hear they're essentially ceasing operations soon.

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

as a kid i always wanted something from the K-Mart snack bar.

carne asada, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:04 (eighteen years ago)

I like that they're so grody. They are like Wal-Mart with no fronting. (Wal-Mart = gross but attempts to not appear to be, with mixed success. K-Mart does not give a flying fuck.)

Abbott, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:04 (eighteen years ago)

My pals and I's hangout in HS was the K-Mart snackateria.

Abbott, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:05 (eighteen years ago)

year old pretzels and cherry iceez

carne asada, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

I KNOW IT'S SWEET SHIT, nice little environment to be teenage weirdoz trying to play Exquisite Corpse and making up bad jokes.

Abbott, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

Ross

This is hilarious but also sad. Putting some $3 tee-shirts on layaway.

Ms Misery, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I know, my mom-in-law would always hold eight-dollar sneakers and then spend at least two weeks pondering whether she actually wanted to buy them.

Abbott, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

We always used to call it "Kame-Apart".

The one in my hometown closed down years ago. It wasn't in a poor section of town, though, just a shitty mall.

dan m, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

i like that they still have those coin operated kiddy rides out front

carne asada, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah that's why I like Kmart! It reminds me of the '80 when basically everything was gross and disorganized. I was in a Kmart a couple of weeks ago, the worst(slash best) one I've ever been in, and I simply could not believe they were operating a snack bar! I love your dirty stinking store but I'm not gonna eat your hot dogs!

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

the same hot dogs have been spinning around on that thing forever

carne asada, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

I am going to apply for the Kmart snack bar guy. Get some serious reading done.

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

anyone for Cali remember GEMCO?

carne asada, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

there are nothing but "poor sections" of my own

strongohulkington, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

town, even

strongohulkington, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

Anyway I was in Kmart looking for a prepaid phone card... the electronics people had no idea what I was talking about, so I went to customer service who had no idea what I was talking about, then I talked to the seriously pale and creepy manager who just grunted... So I looked for them myself and found them.

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

I sort of remember Gemco, I remember having to go there every month or so for a 99 cent 8x10 picture in black and white.

svend, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, oh, the K-Mart here (and others I've seen) still has a B&W four-photo photobooth, and it's only a buck!

Abbott, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

x-pst
it's like a really vague memory to me. i remember it had groovy architecture

i love those picture booths.

carne asada, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

Remember the Treasury? I think it was like a Kmart run by JC Penny's or something. I just remember it because it was across the street from the Kmart.

svend, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

totally remember The Treasury too

carne asada, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:33 (eighteen years ago)

my mom used to drag me to all these places

carne asada, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

Me too, my only pleasure was hiding in the center of the circular clothing racks.

Yesterday I bought a perfect and wonderful bra at K-Mart for $8. Not bad!

Abbott, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:35 (eighteen years ago)

K-mart filth reminds me of the '80s/early-'90s when even chain movie theaters were pretty crappy and the pre-show entertainment wasn't programmed nationally with NBC advertising. Stadium seating is nice, but I think I'd give it up for the theaters to feel like they did when I was little.

milo z, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:36 (eighteen years ago)

OTM

Abbott, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

Do all their prices still end in .97 cents?

svend, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

In my hometown the K-Mart is just in a giant strip mall. Aldi is in the poor neighborhoods.

jessie monster, Friday, 14 September 2007 20:16 (eighteen years ago)

Our K-Mart is located in the western part of town - a little faded but still plenty of affluent households within a mile of the place. The other K-Mart was demolished to make room for the arena.

does K-Mart still have blue light specials?

They still advertise them on television. The commercials feature a talking blue siren light as it weaves in and out of aisles on a shopping cart, Naked Gun-style.

I had my cell phone stolen there!

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Friday, 14 September 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

It's located in a really average part of town, right in the middle by the high school and a bunch of businesses, so I'd say no. But it's not in the big new development a couple miles west, either.

xpost - whoa photos!

Maria, Friday, 14 September 2007 22:23 (eighteen years ago)

So much so that's it's not even in this town.

Michael White, Friday, 14 September 2007 22:27 (eighteen years ago)

The Oxnard K-Mart was in a decent part of town, and close enough for the 11 year old me to walk to and have fun for hours. It was rare that I bought food at the cafe, but I liked it when I did.

nickn, Saturday, 15 September 2007 03:19 (eighteen years ago)

So much so that's it's not even in this town.

That's just like Northfield. The KMart is technically in the little (much cheaper to live in) town next door. Northfield is also so idealistic that when Target wanted to come in on the same road - but in NORTHFIELD, it was a huge fuss in town and there was a local election. Allowing Target to come in passed by a very small margin. (As if KMart wasn't already basically here...)

Honestly, I was happy to have somewhere to buy diapers for a decent price that *wasn't* KMart, but I have kind of come around to KMart's Martha Stewart line. I like bakeware that I can toss in the dishwasher.
