It's tough, July and August are both faves but it's got to be July, my birthday month.

*rumpie*, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

August runs this

I DIED, Friday, 14 September 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

October. It's cool enough for a sweater, but not deathly cold. The leaves are pretty. You can smell fireplaces in the air. It's good for snuggling, because you're not quite used to being chilly yet. Later, you get to dress up for Halloween and go to parties.

kenan, Friday, 14 September 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

October, followed closely by August

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 14 September 2007 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

May vs. October

elmo argonaut, Friday, 14 September 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

July is pretty good, too

elmo argonaut, Friday, 14 September 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

May 15th to June 14th is the best month.

Will M., Friday, 14 September 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

November. Usually the first month when it's not hot at all.

Spring months are good, warm but not hot during the day, cool nights for driving around with the windows down. But in Texas you never know which month that will be. Could be January, could be May.

milo z, Friday, 14 September 2007 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

8080 yes

but I think I would rather get married in a may

FEBRUARY is the worst and it is spelled stupid.

Abbott, Friday, 14 September 2007 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

But mercifully short.

I actually think March and April are my least favorites, because winter is allllllmost over, but not really. The anticipation is killing.

kenan, Friday, 14 September 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

JUNE

Just got offed, Friday, 14 September 2007 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

may v october otm, at least where i live

gabbneb, Friday, 14 September 2007 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

I am biased abt June bcz it was when I was born, but for some reason the picture for June in calendars is always the 9th or 11th worst in the calendar.

Abbott, Friday, 14 September 2007 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

February pwns

dan m, Friday, 14 September 2007 21:55 (eighteen years ago)

I was born in February and it sucks SO MUCH

Just got offed, Friday, 14 September 2007 21:56 (eighteen years ago)

I hate you February, you are cold and depressing, and you have the worst holiday.

Abbott, Friday, 14 September 2007 21:57 (eighteen years ago)

How dare you speak ill of George Washington's birthday?!?!

dan m, Friday, 14 September 2007 21:58 (eighteen years ago)

May vs October here, too.

Michael White, Friday, 14 September 2007 22:00 (eighteen years ago)

And here, leaning towards october what with birthday and all

Matt, Friday, 14 September 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

October guys, be real.

Clay, Saturday, 15 September 2007 00:54 (eighteen years ago)

March, because it's the only month that is also a command.

John Justen, Saturday, 15 September 2007 00:58 (eighteen years ago)

Winter is well and truly over by April down here, and it's not too hot yet, so that's my vote.

Rock Hardy, Saturday, 15 September 2007 02:06 (eighteen years ago)

Totally October.

luna, Saturday, 15 September 2007 02:07 (eighteen years ago)

I think I have to go with October, too.

I was born in February and if there is a worse month, I don't know what it is.

(Oh wait, yes I do; it's March. Sorry John.)

Sara R-C, Saturday, 15 September 2007 02:12 (eighteen years ago)

milo correct: november.

1) thanksgiving
2) snow
3) birthday
4) bare trees
5) leaf underfoot

remy bean, Saturday, 15 September 2007 02:51 (eighteen years ago)

My first thought is September, my bday month, but really, May is tops. Spring fever is great. It's warm, I feel like being active, baseball is in full swing.

Jeff, Saturday, 15 September 2007 02:53 (eighteen years ago)

Winter makes me depressed, and fall is just spent dreading it.

Jeff, Saturday, 15 September 2007 02:55 (eighteen years ago)

October everywhere in the world

youn, Saturday, 15 September 2007 02:56 (eighteen years ago)

September. Football season starts. Baseball season is winding up (pennant race). No more humidity from August. Apples. Kids are back in school so no more disaffected youth ruining my late morning strolls. I can drink wine without sweating. The train is weirdly empty.

brownie, Saturday, 15 September 2007 03:13 (eighteen years ago)

i fucking love february abbott! and the spelling is the most beautiful part.

i'm oneo f those ppl that says the R, i just love how it rolls of my tongue

Surmounter, Saturday, 15 September 2007 03:17 (eighteen years ago)

I don't even things like this. I mean, they all have days in them, and some of those days are cool, and some of those days aren't, but in the end I find a way to get by.

wow I just realized what a killjoy this must make me sound like. I guess I'm just weirded out by the notion that people have concrete ideas in their minds of what certain months entail; even seasons are a bit abstract for me.

bernard snowy, Saturday, 15 September 2007 03:20 (eighteen years ago)

er, that first sentence should be "I don't even notice things like this"

bernard snowy, Saturday, 15 September 2007 03:20 (eighteen years ago)

April! NHL playoffs begin, and Spring/rebirth and all that bullshit

outdoor_miner, Saturday, 15 September 2007 03:33 (eighteen years ago)

i a ctually really do thnk about months, i think it's cuz i hate the heat, so i like certain months that aren't hot. for instance i am SUPER excited we are finally in september. september 21 will be a happy happy day

Surmounter, Saturday, 15 September 2007 03:41 (eighteen years ago)

For the purposes of this poll, I think I'm going to judge the months by how much is sucks to be single in them.

WINTERMONTHS: I'm cold get under the blankets with me oh look makeouts.
SPRINGANDEARLYSUMMERMONTHS: Hurray look how we frollick theres a hill to roll down makeouts.
FALLMONTHS: Oh the spiced wine and the side of the family we like and the leaves and the secksy cardigans major makeouts.
AUGUSTMONTH: I am either too hot or feel trapped in my Air Conditioned Fortress. Makeouts? Eh.

August is the supreme winner.

September has the same hope & optimism & romance as May, but October is so much more chill. October is hot toddies/blueberry tea time, September is all lazy porch Indian summer street hockey on the one-way block rye ale whirlwind. Love both.

Abbott, you're scaring me with your poetry. Please tell me that you are going to school for some word-related stuff.

January is rubbish mostly but does still have that feeling of potential.

Hmm, yeah...actually, I can see January being kind of a dark horse in this contest, now that you mention it.

dell, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

no way, too cold, new year be damned.

kenan, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 00:05 (eighteen years ago)

Haha dell, no, I'm just thinking about playing street hockey. People in creative writing classes bring up my GO GO GADGET MURDER RAY desires fullforce. Doing nanowrimo this year tho.

Abbott, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 00:07 (eighteen years ago)

Kenan, if my ILX spidey-stalkerish senses are correct, though, you live in Chicago, right? Fucking Arctic, may as well be, eh?

Abbott, please do something. I understand your aversion to creative writing classes...and I'm glad you're gonna do nanowrimo, but I'm just saying, I hope you do. Something. if you feel like it.

I like the idea of a seasonal poll, but there should have been different ones based on geography, right? I mean, for much of the U.S., and I suppose, U.K. and northern Europe, the four are pretty distinct.
Much of the west coast of the U.S. is completely different, though...not too mention the topsy-turviness which comes into play regarding our Australian/NZ people.

dell, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 00:11 (eighteen years ago)

you live in Chicago, right

yassir.

Although January is usually the month where we get this weird little one-day blast of relief, some front moves through and it's 60 degrees for 12 hours. And that's nice. But otherwise way dud.

kenan, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, that one-day stuff I can imagine is amazing. Actually, I was in Chicago almost a year ago, and I was paging through someone's "Guide to Living in Chicago-glah-blah" book, and the authors made a point of stating that the mean annual temp is actually not as extreme as folks tend to think it is. There are other American cities which wouldn't immediately come to mind, which are in fact more extreme in temps. I don't recall the exact details, but suffice it to say that perhaps I shouldn't have made that Arctic crack.

dell, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 00:20 (eighteen years ago)

I wasn't offended or anything. IIRC, it was last January where the high was 10 for about a week. Butt-numbing cold in a very literal way. But in general, at least in my last 4 winters here, it's usually only too cold to go outside for a couple-few weeks a year, and only too hot to go outside for the same.

kenan, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 00:24 (eighteen years ago)

There are, however, a lot more weeks where it's kinda like it is now, highs from 65-80, lows from 50-70. Not heat or AC necessary.

kenan, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

NO heat etc.

kenan, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

There are other American cities which wouldn't immediately come to mind, which are in fact more extreme in temps.

Sure there are, and way more extreme in snowfall, etc. Winters get a LOT worse than this. It's just that there's 9-10 million of us, and it's nearly expected of us to bitch about the weather, and the bitching reaches critical mass at some point, and soon everyone in the country thinks Chicago has the worst weather in the world.

kenan, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 00:32 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, (and for the record, I didn't assume that you'd be offended, nor was I particularly trying to be snark-ass).

But, yeah, that's interesting, in light of horror stories that have circulated (to my ears, anyhow) about the frigidity of Chicago winters. I was made to think that no one ever left their homes at night. But, Fargo, say, is a slightly more realistic take on that scenario, I would imagine.

I mean, northeast states get extreme low temps for days at a time in Jan./Feb... so, I imagine it ain't too terribly different.

either you or Boston!

dell, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 00:36 (eighteen years ago)

i'll admit i liked october better when i smoked.
-- tremendoid, Monday, 17 September 2007 18:17 (Yesterday) Link

why is that?
-- kenan, Monday, 17 September 2007 18:22 (Yesterday) Link

oh the crispness of the air makes the smoke taste better, going out to have a smoke is pleasantly chilly as opposed to cold, smoking is better when wearing a jacket; all nonsense but it's true, and there was always a lot of parties/shows/events in october to exploit all of this.

tremendoid, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 00:37 (eighteen years ago)

xpost interesting thing -- Boston is also far more windy than Chicago. Funny how rumors get started. :)

kenan, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 00:38 (eighteen years ago)

tremendoid: I agree with all of that! But I think it's probably just emotional connections, not having to do with much about the temp.

kenan, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 00:40 (eighteen years ago)

the crispness of the air makes the smoke taste better

although I wonder if there's some science to this one, because I have also noticed it. Maybe since cooler air holds less humidity, the tobacco is a bit more dry and pulls better? Just a guess.

kenan, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 00:42 (eighteen years ago)

oh the crispness of the air makes the smoke taste better, going out to have a smoke is pleasantly chilly as opposed to cold, smoking is better when wearing a jacket; all nonsense but it's true, and there was always a lot of parties/shows/events in october to exploit all of this.

otm x1000

plus October is the most romantic month of the year. And I actually read about some study which said that, although humans don't have a "mating season" as do other members of the animal kingdom, there is evidence on some hormonal level or something that sex drives are highest in humans during the autumn months.

Yeah, and, San Francisco is pretty fucking windy, too.

dell, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 00:48 (eighteen years ago)

try lighting a match

dell, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 00:48 (eighteen years ago)

San Francisco is just kinda the windy/foggy/unseasonably cool/generally weird coastal weather city. Not much of a nickname.

kenan, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 00:51 (eighteen years ago)

xp kenan oh yeah there's a lot of emotional stuff i didn't bother dragging into it, seemed to have a lot of heavy stuff happen to me in october (heavy good stuff), times I really remember; the smoking may be somewhat of a red herring.

tremendoid, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 00:52 (eighteen years ago)

no, you may be on to something. beer's better in october, too! There's some holiday in germany, apparently...

dell, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 01:13 (eighteen years ago)

Windy City, Origin of Name (Chicago)

Abbott, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 01:20 (eighteen years ago)

Q: What is the windiest city in the USA?

A: According to the National Climatic Data Center's list of annual average wind speeds, the windiest U.S. city is Dodge City, Kansas, with an average speed of 13.9 mph. Other windy cities include Amarillo, Texas (13.5 mph) and Rochester, Minn. (13.1 mph.). The windiest "big" cities are New York City (LaGuardia Airport) and Oklahoma City, which both have an average annual wind speed of 12.2 mph.

The "windy city" of Chicago isn't as high on the list as you might think. It's average annual wind speed is 10.3 mph.

Our answers archive has more FAQ about wind speed averages and records.

(Answered by Doyle Rice, USATODAY.com weather editor., June 23, 2005)

Abbott, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 01:21 (eighteen years ago)

Interesting. I can understand the phenomenon of wind coming off of the lake, but some of the other stuff, I dunno. Most cities with skyscrapers seem to have that sorta wind tunnel effect.

gabbneb, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 01:26 (eighteen years ago)

Abbott, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 01:29 (eighteen years ago)

october ftw

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 01:35 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, living in SF made me think, "how is this not 'the windy city', as opposed to Chicago?"

Abbott, hah, and I'm only basing that on some one hour-ish Greyhound bus layover while sheltered in the safety of a Subway sandwich shop! But still, looking out the window, it seemed surreal how violently the dust was flying all about, like nothing I'd ever seen...so I'm somewhat glad to have that confirmed for me.

dell, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 01:40 (eighteen years ago)

Gah, my whole memory of age five is with my eyes squinted shut and still getting hit with sand all the time.
