This American Life, largely by default

gabbneb, Saturday, 15 September 2007 04:21 (eighteen years ago)

DONNIE DARKO x 10000000000000000000000000

Tape Store, Saturday, 15 September 2007 04:23 (eighteen years ago)

(Miranda July = 2nd, TAL = 3rd)

Tape Store, Saturday, 15 September 2007 04:24 (eighteen years ago)

scott seward, Saturday, 15 September 2007 04:29 (eighteen years ago)

I like Tony Shalhoub a fair bit, but it has never occurred to me to watch 'Monk'

gabbneb, Saturday, 15 September 2007 04:33 (eighteen years ago)

molly ringwald

get bent, Saturday, 15 September 2007 04:36 (eighteen years ago)

i liked motherless brooklyn & donnie darko, i actively despise TAL, McSweeney's & Miranda July, and nabisco is gonna arrive here in a few minutes to tell us why it's ok to like this shit

gershy, Saturday, 15 September 2007 04:37 (eighteen years ago)

ugh, none of them

electricsound, Saturday, 15 September 2007 04:50 (eighteen years ago)

Curious Incident of the Dog at Nighttime hell of ripped off this guy but made him Christopher Robin.

Abbott, Saturday, 15 September 2007 04:55 (eighteen years ago)

Here's the thing -- how much is 'quirk' synonymous with 'twee'?

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 15 September 2007 04:55 (eighteen years ago)

Oh god, where is the option to slash my throat.

Jeff, Saturday, 15 September 2007 04:56 (eighteen years ago)

if garden state is "generation defining" i want to go slit my wrists right now.

tehresa, Saturday, 15 September 2007 05:00 (eighteen years ago)

lol xpost

tehresa, Saturday, 15 September 2007 05:00 (eighteen years ago)

GAHHHH. When will Darko finally receive the recognition it deserves? Next to Inland Empire, the theatrical cut is probably the strongest film of the 2000s. So atmospheric, so moving, so well-acted...an amazing script, too (prob. my favorite adaptation ever).

Tape Store, Saturday, 15 September 2007 05:02 (eighteen years ago)

I guess I'd rather watch Roadhouse more when it comes to being entertained by Patrick Swayze. And no quirk whatsoever!

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 15 September 2007 05:09 (eighteen years ago)

the 80s ended some time back, ned

gershy, Saturday, 15 September 2007 05:11 (eighteen years ago)

I expect better jokes from you, Gershy.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 15 September 2007 05:13 (eighteen years ago)

quirky jokes?

gershy, Saturday, 15 September 2007 05:18 (eighteen years ago)

you forgot New Zealand

El Tomboto, Saturday, 15 September 2007 05:18 (eighteen years ago)

x-post -- No, then you would have to die.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 15 September 2007 05:18 (eighteen years ago)

repped by Flight of the Conchords, no? xp

Roz, Saturday, 15 September 2007 05:20 (eighteen years ago)

Arrested Development, ffs. Least annoying QMF.

Roz, Saturday, 15 September 2007 05:20 (eighteen years ago)

Quirk is the unearned pseudo-irreverence of the sheltered

Hurting 2, Saturday, 15 September 2007 05:26 (eighteen years ago)

Donnie Darko wasn't an adaptation.

The Yellow Kid, Saturday, 15 September 2007 05:59 (eighteen years ago)

if you're gonna indie-bash, don't bury your head up judd apatows ass at the end b/c every quirky motherfucker I know loves his stuff.

bnw, Saturday, 15 September 2007 06:00 (eighteen years ago)

Judd Apatow is not quirk

Hurting 2, Saturday, 15 September 2007 06:07 (eighteen years ago)

your shit is based on a logical fallacy

Hurting 2, Saturday, 15 September 2007 06:08 (eighteen years ago)

knocked up has a bright eyes song on the soundtrack. Sorry, not buying that as the yin to quirk's yang.

bnw, Saturday, 15 September 2007 06:17 (eighteen years ago)

Knocked Up opens with Old Dirty Bastard

Hurting 2, Saturday, 15 September 2007 06:20 (eighteen years ago)

quirky kid in arrested devlopment looks incredibly similar to quirky kid in superbad.

bnw, Saturday, 15 September 2007 06:28 (eighteen years ago)

That could be because Michael Cera played both parts?

Clay, Saturday, 15 September 2007 06:29 (eighteen years ago)

Roadhouse was awesome, I saw for 1st time this summer. Thumbs up!

Laurel, Saturday, 15 September 2007 06:37 (eighteen years ago)

I don care about Swayze, though, my heart belongs to Wade.

Laurel, Saturday, 15 September 2007 06:39 (eighteen years ago)

Was that the first Sam Elliott-as-grizzled sidekick role, I wonder.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 15 September 2007 06:40 (eighteen years ago)

You fell for his lower groin scar, do not lie.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 15 September 2007 06:40 (eighteen years ago)

I fell for his rakish grin, more like. I'm a sucker for those. And the squint.

Laurel, Saturday, 15 September 2007 06:43 (eighteen years ago)

That's bright sun in California Kansas.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 15 September 2007 06:52 (eighteen years ago)

Apatow only produced Superbad

Hurting 2, Saturday, 15 September 2007 07:07 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not sure I can decide between Donnie Darko and FOTC. Hm.

Trayce, Saturday, 15 September 2007 07:59 (eighteen years ago)

scot u have a generous heart

jhøshea, Saturday, 15 September 2007 08:23 (eighteen years ago)

Anyone into Noi (Albinoi)? I saw it for the first time a little while back. Nice Icelandic quirkiness w/ lovely fjord scenery and post-rocky soundtrack.

I'm a sucker for this shit obv, though I'll back the director's cut of DD over the theatrical release all day long. (Making sense = classic.)

Sundar, Saturday, 15 September 2007 09:07 (eighteen years ago)

Monk. THELONIOUS, MOTHERFUCKERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Oilyrags, Saturday, 15 September 2007 13:33 (eighteen years ago)

No Sufjan/Devendra?

Eazy, Saturday, 15 September 2007 13:36 (eighteen years ago)

Steve Buscemi

abanana, Saturday, 15 September 2007 13:40 (eighteen years ago)

"motherfuckers that ain't actually funny poll"

Anyone into Noi (Albinoi)?

i liked it the first time around, when it was called POWDER. ZING!!!

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Saturday, 15 September 2007 13:54 (eighteen years ago)

Anything - anything - but Donnie fucking Darko. Anything.

DavidM, Saturday, 15 September 2007 14:01 (eighteen years ago)

I'm actually a bit surprised the article didn't mention Amelie.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 15 September 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

Anyone into Noi (Albinoi)?

Me! But I watched it with someone who didn't appreciate it at all. Boo!

surfer_stone_rosa, Saturday, 15 September 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

David - it makes me very happy to see there is someone else who hates Donnie Darko.

Oilyrags, Saturday, 15 September 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

Donnie Darko wasn't an adaptation.

The story is extremely similar to The Last Temptation of Christ...I doubt it's coincidence.

Tape Store, Saturday, 15 September 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

Quirk lovers vs quirk haters

Not very interested in most of what I know from that list but I like Bottle Rocket and I reread Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius not long ago and I enjoyed it (doubtful and open and good-natured).

ogmor, Saturday, 15 September 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

I've never said OTM, but I'll make an exception this time for Ned's comment on Roadhouse. OTM Raggett.

Jeff, Saturday, 15 September 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

Speaking of, this brings the lols:

http://bventertainment.go.com/tv/buenavista/ebertandroeper/index2.html?sec=6&subsec=road+house

Jeff, Saturday, 15 September 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

arrested development. of course.

stevie, Saturday, 15 September 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

Monk and Buscemi might technically be quirky motherfuckers, but I don't really think they're quirky in the way this poll means

Hurting 2, Saturday, 15 September 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

The story is extremely similar to The Last Temptation of Christ...I doubt it's coincidence.

OK thats the first time I think I've ever heard that theory. I'm sure Ive never even read Richard Kelly mention it.

Trayce, Sunday, 16 September 2007 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure Ive never even read Richard Kelly mention it.

It's one of the two films playing when Gretchen and Donnie go to the late night theatre...Also, I first saw this theory on ILX (google brought up many more mentions)

Tape Store, Sunday, 16 September 2007 01:40 (eighteen years ago)

Skot's picture threads are quirkier than almost any option in this poll.

Alex in Baltimore, Sunday, 16 September 2007 03:16 (eighteen years ago)

Skot's picture threads are metal, not quirky.

milo z, Sunday, 16 September 2007 03:22 (eighteen years ago)

i really liked that article btw

are we voting for best or worst etc

i voted motherless brooklyn

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 16 September 2007 07:42 (eighteen years ago)

whoever made this poll committed the heinous idiotic error of including 'arrested development'. which isn't so much 'quirky' as the greatest television show ever made. i mean, i'm struggling to think of anything you could match AD up with that I'd vote for instead. ad vs. cardiacs? ad vs. cricket? ad vs. blue jam? ad vs. the internet? jeez, i'm still edging towards mitchell hurwitz on this one.

actually, i'm not going to vote for ad now. because i think scott's asking for the quirkiest most motherfucky of the lot. in which case PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE would win flat-out. in its absence (and in Amelie's absence) i will have to plump for napoleon dynamite.

Just got offed, Sunday, 16 September 2007 12:22 (eighteen years ago)

The story is extremely similar to The Last Temptation of Christ...I doubt it's coincidence.

And Harvey.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Sunday, 16 September 2007 12:42 (eighteen years ago)

So where the fuck is the lever to vote for this gal?

Eazy, Thursday, 20 September 2007 05:37 (eighteen years ago)

where is tyra.gif

strgn, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:40 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Sunday, 23 September 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

this poll succeeds really well because it takes a bunch of things that tons of ppl on ilx love (arrested development, flight of the conchords) and a bunch things that tons of ppl on ilx hate (garden state, miranda july) and says HEY GUESS WHAT THEYRE THE SAME THING

max, Sunday, 23 September 2007 23:09 (eighteen years ago)

thus making everyone mad and defensive

max, Sunday, 23 September 2007 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

but...but...

Just got offed, Sunday, 23 September 2007 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

i mean guys its ok to say taht you like some quirky things and dislike other quirky things, just like you can say i like some rock music and dislike other rock music. no one's going to tell you that your love for arrested development places zach braff's dick in your mouth.

max, Sunday, 23 September 2007 23:14 (eighteen years ago)

ctrl+f "crispin glover" not found WTF

nickalicious, Sunday, 23 September 2007 23:28 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, I didn't really read this thread at all before I did my ctrl+f. I didn't realize we were using "quirky" as a bad word again. Let's instead call Crispin a weird ass weirdo.

nickalicious, Sunday, 23 September 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

Actually I can't tell whether or not quirky is a perjorative here. Thanks, weedman.

nickalicious, Sunday, 23 September 2007 23:30 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Monday, 24 September 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

i think the loathing that quirk inspires in some people is maybe the most interesting thing about quirk. i mean, i like some quirk (wes anderson, jonathan lethem... is david foster wallace too smart to count as quirky or something?... plus also donnie darko is more weird than quirky, at least by the definitions the essay offers), and i don't like other quirk (much of the rest of that list), and as a whole i agree the sensibility has only so much to offer and feels played out... but the real vituperation it inspires some places (like on ilx, e.g.) is funny. it's like getting outraged about big-eyed puppy paintings or something.

tipsy mothra, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 00:32 (eighteen years ago)

Arrested Development 22

Tape Store, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 00:44 (eighteen years ago)

And yes, I'm a bitter motherfucker.

Tape Store, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 01:18 (eighteen years ago)

Everything Is Illuminated 2

I had to stop reading the newest one after 30 or 40 pages,,,the quirkness was too much.

W4LTER, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 01:20 (eighteen years ago)

i kinda liked running with scissors. i saw that dude's mom on the street once. she was in a wheelchair.

i thought motherless brooklyn was way overrated. i didn't hate it, but...it was seriously flawed.

scott seward, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 01:35 (eighteen years ago)

Would <i>Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close</i> be a stronger candidate, with its quirky child-state front and center?

Eazy, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 03:27 (eighteen years ago)

Yep. I found it so annoying.

W4LTER, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 03:38 (eighteen years ago)
