Yeesh. Well, presumably it's his own money he's spending.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

absolutely beautiful, and perhaps a better end for all the f&m cows in the uk.

Geoff, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, personally I think there is absolutely no merit in dropping a headless bull out of a helicopter...I severly hope the said artist made no money from it. Art that aims to shock is not shocking it just makes me yawn, and think whatever happened to asethics.

Woah!! I wasn't going to bother to look, but HEADLESS BULLS BEING DROPPED OUT OF HELICOPTERS??!! Fucking A, man!

asethics

Ass ethics? I fear there are sorely lacking on this board.

To extend Anthony's question- How can we distinguish between art and non-art? Has it become a purely subjective distinction or do definite, tangible parameters still apply? From the moment that Duchamp's "Fountain" was placed in a gallery, has this question become unaswerable?

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is my question. As well as has shock stopped being eggective as a motivator. The industrial crucfixion, the dancers in the alcoves of broken buildings , both seemed to say what was needed. The bull was superflous, was it not ?

anthony, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe its superfluity was the intention. Which is pretty dumbass if you're taking it to that level.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

there was a funny parody in the oninon about how a new painting of jesus was so controversial because it hadn't had feces smeared on it and he was not getting sodomized by satan rather it was just a run of the mill portrait. there were loads of quotes from important art critics saying how it could have been improved in order to become less disgusting.

keith, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Violence to animals is cool, or at least funny.

Sterling Clover, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

typos-as-art: "eggective"

Looks like it. Instillation Art seems to be nothing more than [endless] variations on Marcel Duchamp's theme and the question 'Art:Y/N?' is repeated each time Sarah Lucas, Damien Hurst et al leave their pieces of old tut lying about on gallery floors.

But wasn't Duchamp merely taking the piss (pun half-intended)? He wanted to "destroy art"; to topple the tables and so forth. Instead a whole group of people looked at his worked and obviously thought 'that looks easy!' and ran with it. The result is the paucity of imagination on display in galleries today.

D*A*V*I*D*M, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But perhaps difficult art is rubbish.

mark s, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

People still worry about the art/not art question in aesthetics. I think they're wasting their fucking time.

Josh, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sterling, please say that you're kidding or being sarcastic or something... I know the issues surrounding art vs. violence and the ethical treatment of animals are complicated, and that there are a lot of divergent opinions on the matter, but the callousness of your post is not appreciated.. by me... but feel free not to give a shit, if that is indeed the truth. Apologies to all if this disrupts the thread - just had to say.

Kim, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So talk to me about it Kim.
Lets talk about HErman Nitsch or Animal Cruelty in Art.
Or how we judge art

anthony, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Josh you swore!

Mike Hanley, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah i'm w/ kim. fuck herman nitsch.

duane, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

although the bull in this case is already dead - i woulda et it (maybe) - i dunno.

duane, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thats part of the point of Nitsch, the fucking.
I know thats flip , but i think there is somethign to say about ritualzing our native bloodlust.

anthony, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What's your fucking problem, Hanle y? You act like I'm the pinefox or something.

Josh, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry, Kim, I don't go around torturing animals or such, but I got some sort of evil grin from the image of a cow getting dropped from on high. What else do you expect from a predatory modernist?

Sterling Clover, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Artnet reports that in addition to verbal attacks chastising the project, Littmann was accosted on the street and pushed into traffic by a vexed individual who shouted: “Go away and take your shitty forest!”
