I am very ashamed.

Ed, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:54 (eighteen years ago)

ha! don't worry i still think of you as a friend of the Earth

blueski, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:55 (eighteen years ago)

None

Tom D., Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:55 (eighteen years ago)

actions not words: that's a 0 from me.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:55 (eighteen years ago)

None. I haven't been on a plane for 5 years.

NickB, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:56 (eighteen years ago)

I look forward to being guilt tripped, thanks in advance you guys.

Mark C, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:57 (eighteen years ago)

I had cut my non-business flying down to zero for about 18 months and then got into a very long distance relationship and that has all gone to pot.

Ed, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:57 (eighteen years ago)

Fuck all this guilt trip shit

Tom D., Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:58 (eighteen years ago)

I think 7

RJG, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:58 (eighteen years ago)

Ed has she come over to see you much? are US air fares equivalent price or cheaper?

blueski, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:59 (eighteen years ago)

Only two, but I have at least six planned between now and Christmas.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:59 (eighteen years ago)

don't hold mark c down, haters.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:59 (eighteen years ago)

Zero, thanks, and I'm already feeling the "haven't significantly traveled recently" guilt I so cleverly installed at age 15.

en i see kay, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 12:01 (eighteen years ago)

you feel guilt about *not* travelling? wuht.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 12:02 (eighteen years ago)

So do I!

Tom D., Tuesday, 18 September 2007 12:03 (eighteen years ago)

My carbon footprint is way too small!!

Tom D., Tuesday, 18 September 2007 12:03 (eighteen years ago)

wtf?

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 12:04 (eighteen years ago)

You know what they say about men with small carbon footprints.

Mark C, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 12:04 (eighteen years ago)

Another vote for the top option.

aldo, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 12:05 (eighteen years ago)

4. To Barcelona and back then to Gdansk and back. Am shortly to do Gdansk and back again.

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 12:05 (eighteen years ago)

Went to Amsterdam last October. Going to LA in Nov though. Have to see the in-laws and thanksgiving is as good a time as any.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 12:06 (eighteen years ago)

Oh totally. See, I read a lot of Beat shit at that age, the effects of which take forever to undo.

xpost

en i see kay, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 12:06 (eighteen years ago)

She has come over more, but only because she has had more reasons than just me to be here. Fares are about the same.

Ed, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 12:07 (eighteen years ago)

the Beat writers worked passage on a steamer, i woulda thought?

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 12:07 (eighteen years ago)

Quite a few flights. And one of them included the epic Los Angeles-Auckland-Melbourne-Adelaide trek which means I have the carbon footprint of a small European country now.

King Boy Pato, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 12:09 (eighteen years ago)

I haver been on a plane.

acrobat, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 12:09 (eighteen years ago)

Did I say it was rational?

Also, most of my travel was done back then in a 1987 Toyota Camry with 185K+ miles on it that I saved up for, which is totally the stolen Chevy of my generation.

All sorts of xpost

en i see kay, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 12:11 (eighteen years ago)

yes to not-travelling guilt. wasting our lives etc.

blueski, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 12:13 (eighteen years ago)

i can't get into that mindset. how is not travelling 'wasting a life'? it's sort of how the majority of the world's population live?

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 12:14 (eighteen years ago)

Same mindset as not aspiring to detached housing I think.

Ed, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 12:15 (eighteen years ago)

funnily enough i don't tend to compare my existence or life expectations to that of some poor dude in Darfur.

i am part of the problem i know.

blueski, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 12:15 (eighteen years ago)

Chicago and back, Boston and back, Venice and back.

Mark C, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 12:16 (eighteen years ago)

5, i think. also 1 helicopter, bitches.

jhøshea, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 12:16 (eighteen years ago)

not just darfur, but, well, this country till not very long ago. i suppose there's an 'do it while you can' angle.

Tom D., Tuesday, 18 September 2007 12:23 (eighteen years ago)

WTF am I doing hanging around here when I could be off somewhere else enjoying myself surely?

yeah i feel that but it's more to do with working, not being in britain. much of which is awes.

it's the same as successful/exciting career in aspirational terms imo

an exciting career is a good thing in itself. (i would imagine.) i'm not really disagreeing here, but would put having a good career way above getting the odd holiday. up to a point they go together.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 12:23 (eighteen years ago)

don't get the Callaghan ref

not just 'the odd holiday' but life-changing adventures, 'finding yourself' and all that wank. you can have a good life without leaving your own country...i GUESS...but fuck that.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

I know about TO&L issues and I HAAAAAAATE changeovers. If I amend to count all up-downs as 'flights' I'm still only down for 10 planes to make 3 trips. Don't think my total will rise beyond that. Et toi?

suzy, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

Just two for me (out to Barca and back again).

as far as i can ascertain, all the flights were scheduled to go anyway, so no guilt attached

Yep, because even if the demand for flights fell to zero all scheduled flights would continue to run until the end of time.

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

Easyjet do have newer, slightly less-polluting planes than a lot of other airlines.

Also, budget flights tend to be a lot fuller than others, which you could look at as efficient. Not that all the passengers would have flown if there hadn't been a budget option.

Alba, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

I've come to loathe the "you have to travel" mindset. What makes traveling any better than, uh, staying at home for your entire life? If seeing the world/places doesn't appeal to you, that's perfectly fine. If you do like to travel, don't berate others for not sharing your views and travel.

I've gone to Japan twice this year. I can't imagine doing it again this year as I'll be having my second baby. I might go back next year MAYBE but I'm not sure yet. 2008 might be a flightless year, who knows, but I am hoping to travel somewhere (not Japan) in 2009, leaving the kids with the grandparents. I do miss traveling with my husband. :-(

stevienixed, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:27 (eighteen years ago)

Oh what I also wanted to ask: how do you count it? Do I just click 2 cause I've been to Japan twice or do I pick 4 cause I've been on four planes? Y'know, back 'n' forth... I'm dumb, I know. Traveling hasn't given me any extra BRANE material. :-)

stevienixed, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't been on a plane in 13 years. I don't plan to go on one ever again. It's more cowardice than ecology. I'll go by boat, they have life boats.

jel --, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't been able to afford to go overseas in years. When it comes to traveling around the US I prefer driving because it's just more fun.

(also I think they have lifeboats on planes, no?)

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

"water landing"

slides may be detached and used as rafts

Ed, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

I suppose I could go by Cessna.

jel --, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

I am totally detaching the slide and using it as a raft next time I'm on a long-haul flight.

Alba, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:49 (eighteen years ago)

omg do you guys know how much i now want to use a lifeboat to jump out of a plane? preferably the plane would deploy the inflat-a-slide while in midair when i do this so i can also slide down the slide, in the lifeboat.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:49 (eighteen years ago)

I suppose I could go by Cessna

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

Remember to watch for your bikini top slipping as you come down the slide!

I think I've probably taken about 8 short-haul flights this year and I've got a (return) long-haul one this Christmas. You've got to fly while there's still oil left!

Alba, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

(seriously though, I do get the train when I can now. Though someone wrote in to the paper to say that the train from Glasgow to London was had as large a carbon footprint as the plane. Who to believe??)

Alba, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

Anyway, short-haul flights aren't so bad cause they don't deposit the CO2 so high in the atmosphere, or something.

Alba, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

Jel - a jumbo jet is very likely safer than a boat and absolutely safer than a cessna

gabbneb, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

Plus Horizon offers comp beer and wine. xpost

Kerm, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

Ah, traveling by car, so much more fun than a plane, especially if you're the passenger and detroit leaning. (hahah I'm sad bitch for referencing two songs in here.)

stevienixed, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

I'd be the like terrified kid in Final Destination though.

jel --, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

Yep, because even if the demand for flights fell to zero all scheduled flights would continue to run until the end of time

great spot! take a gold star. but don't take it more than a mile, in case your carbon footprint gets too big.

darraghmac, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 09:04 (eighteen years ago)

(seriously though, I do get the train when I can now. Though someone wrote in to the paper to say that the train from Glasgow to London was had as large a carbon footprint as the plane. Who to believe??)

This sort of depends on the type of plane and the type of train - I think the least polluting airliner has been calculated to produce less CO2 per passenger than a French-style highspeed train (travelling at top speed!) going from London to Edinburgh. However, carbon emissions from highspeed trains fall right off when they travel at slower speeds and most of the comparisons I've seen for typical electric trains vs. typical planes on domestic routes estimate that planes are something like 10 times more polluting. (Obv. this comparison is different in France where these trains actually operate at full speed because the rail network there is essentially nuclear powered).

NickB, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 09:11 (eighteen years ago)

I remember arriving in SF the week after 9/11. Very. Very. VERY weird as there was practically noone in the airport.

nathalie, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 09:14 (eighteen years ago)

i'm at 14, with another six in the next six weeks

:(

^@^, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 09:15 (eighteen years ago)

I really really love flying though, no matter what reason. The designer clothing chains, glamorous cabin crew, and the smell of aviation fuel.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 09:40 (eighteen years ago)

xpost why would you be bummed about it? cause you have to (for work related reasons)?

Are you in Scooch or something? (x-post)

NickB, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 09:43 (eighteen years ago)

nath: carbon footprint! plus a lot of it is work.

^@^, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 09:47 (eighteen years ago)

in the last twelve months: Sydney -> Brisbane and back

in twelve months before that: Adelaide -> Sydney

in next eight weeks: Sydney -> London (change in Bangkok) and back

energy flash gordon, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 13:51 (eighteen years ago)

Glasgow - Bristol and back (December)
Glasgow - Malaga and back (January)
Glasgow - Gatwick - Tampa - Gatwick - Glasgow (March, which I'm counting as four flights)
Glasgow - London City and back (April)
Glasgow - London City and back (June)

That's 12 so far, with another trip to Malaga planned in November. Fear my polluting skills!

ailsa, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

and you smoke!!

RJG, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

I was about to click "one" thinking, yeah, March, but then I realized that I'd lost a year and I haven't flown since March of 2006.
But if this was about ferryboats Maria and Scott and I would PWN alla y'all.

Beth Parker, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

4 trips every year for the past 8 years: home to hometown and back again in summer, repeat in winter. Plus holidays last year, 7.

You know I don't think I ever hear anyone in the US discussing "carbon footprints" other than Al Gore.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

I sure do.

Michael White, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

Madchen, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

Hang on, that should be Glasgow-Schipol-Toronto-Schipol-Toronto. Adjust the results accordingly please, I've already cast my vote. I'm now going to kill myself.

1 is an odd number. Well, obviously it's an odd number, I mean it's a strange number of flights because you expect most flights to come in pairs (out and back). How did those people get home again?
