I accidentally changed my Windows settings so that whenever I put a CD inside, the Windows Media Player automatically starts to play it. I have no idea how to change that setting (changing the default media player doesn't work), does anyone know?
Also, is it possible to change the settings so that Windows doesn't even ask the "what do you want to with this CD" question, so it wouldn't react in any way when I put a CD in?
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)
Anyone?
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)
Right-click on the drive, go to Properties, go to the Autoplay tab, choose "Take no action."
― nabisco, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)
go into explorer, right click on cd drive, properties, autoplay tab, change everything to "take no action", ok

Okay, another question: if I'm using tabs on Firefox instead of having several different windows open, is there some keyboard combination to change between tabs, like the way you can change between windows with alt + tab?

I just like to make fun of how people always say "you should get a Mac," like they think they're really clever and that's never occurred to you before and you were unaware that some kind of Clearly Better Computer existed, which it doesn't, because I switched from Macs to PCs for a reason
― nabisco, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 21:30 (eighteen years ago)
presumably an OTM reason :(
― DG, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)
what was the reason?
― toby, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 21:46 (eighteen years ago)

― DG, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 22:15 (eighteen years ago)
Half right, though: apart from my last Mac suffering multiple drive-wiping collapses, the main reason was that I was working on music, and a PC let me put together lots of bits of software and configure them so they worked together in the ways I wanted. Whereas Macs seem to have a simpler works-or-doesn't vibe: you can buy pro software and have an elegant, full-functioned set-up, but you can't so much rig your own thing together, at least not for a not-quite-poweruser.
There are perfectly good reasons to prefer one or the other, Mac or PC, depending on what you're doing -- this should be pretty obvious -- so it's always funny when anyone goes "buy a Mac!" like this is some grand light-bulb idea. And people do it all the time! People who don't even care about computers! You just say "I need to buy a computer" and someone says "you should get a Mac!" (LOLCultBrand)
(Jon is so hilariously convinced he makes more money than everyone else.)

Anyway yes, I'm quite sure Tuomas would have a much easier time if, instead of clicking a drive properties tab in Windows, he set up Linux on a Mac
― nabisco, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 22:32 (eighteen years ago)

You can download windows media player for mac here

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I have a Mac bcz I got it for free. Before that happened I reallllllly reallllly wanted one (mainly bcz I preferred how Photoshop & Quark didn't have grey backgrounds that covered the whole monitor). About a month in I was like 'buh zuh wtf a PC would be pretty much nicer.' It's kind of like having herpes: at very significant times you can only interact with others who have the same problem.
And yes all my Mac iDol buddies are like 'wtf why don't you have the linux that you can get to look like OSX but can't run anything on?'

Anyway, I got this computer used for 350 euros, I can't afford anything fancier, and I basically just use it for Internet and writing schoolwork, so it's fine by me.

I have a 1680x1050 native pixels display that Windows XP can see just fine when using DVI; when I use VGA, that particular resolution does not appear as an option. I've updated graphics and display drivers, but there's no love. Can this be fixed?
― ̿̿ ̿̿'̿\̵͇̿̿\=(•̪●)=/̵͇̿̿/'̿̿ ̿ ̿ (libcrypt), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 22:13 (seventeen years ago)
Isn't this a hardware thing? That DVI can handle different/more resolutions than straight VGA can?

vga is a dick about plug-n-play. does it recognize what display you have through vga? also why the heck is this an issue exactly, duh use the cable that works
― El Tomboto, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 22:20 (seventeen years ago)
(if this issue is arising because your KVM only supports VGA then lol no it will never work get a new KVM or discard it entirely)
It does see what display I have.
I want VGA to work 'cause I have two PCs hooked up to the display. One is XP, the other 2003. Both have the exact same problem. Driving an LCD at a non-native res drives me nuts.
― ̿̿ ̿̿'̿\̵͇̿̿\=(•̪●)=/̵͇̿̿/'̿̿ ̿ ̿ (libcrypt), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 22:22 (seventeen years ago)
No KVM.
I just use a USB switcher and the input switcher in the display itself.

RDP that motherfucker.
― Jarlrmai, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 23:12 (seventeen years ago)
looks like it was kinda disingenous of the manufacturer to even include a VGA input on a WSXGA screen
― El Tomboto, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 23:17 (seventeen years ago)
RDP = no go for several reasons, most of which are too dull to get into.
The display (Samsung SyncMaster 225bw) sucks in lots of other ways as well. In particular, there's significant posterization near the dark end of the spectrum.
Maybe I'll just get a DVI switchbox.

I linked to a piece on the Seattle Times yesterday, and now I'm getting sidebar notifications about Seattle Times pieces I need to read. How do I go in there and stop this?
(It was a murder-hornet piece. If they don't get you one way, they'll get you another.)
― clemenza, Tuesday, 19 May 2020 17:29 (five years ago)
(It's Windows 10.)
I'm going to assume it is not Windows 10 that is doing this, but your browser. Which one are you using?
It's possible you might need to clear all your cookies, including the few genuinely benign and useful ones like your ilx login cookie, to make your browser forget all about the Seattle Times.
― A is for (Aimless), Tuesday, 19 May 2020 18:13 (five years ago)
I'll try that, thanks. (I think it's a feature of Windows, though, not the browser.)
― clemenza, Tuesday, 19 May 2020 18:37 (five years ago)
Is this a Windows-provided news widget you've opened on your desktop or something? In which case, my advice is to stop hitting yourself.

Hah! Literally two seconds after doing so, a Seattle Times notification. I'll figure it out somehow...or I'll learn to love The Seattle Times.

― Ste, Friday, 5 May 2023 08:50 (two years ago)
Likely something on the other side of the wifi access point. ISP, router, cables, etc. Or if it's a public wifi you might need to sign in on a website -- turn wifi off then on again.
― adam t. (abanana), Friday, 5 May 2023 08:54 (two years ago)

does it connect to non web browser stuff? ie Steam etc?
― Ste, Friday, 5 May 2023 09:03 (two years ago)
Nope. The wifi connection says 'Connected, no internet'. I've tried resetting network settings in the ui and on the command line, forgotten & reconnected to the wifi, switched adapter drivers, restarted services, fiddled about with advanced connection settings. About the only thing I haven't tried is lugging it downstairs and plugging it in to the router.
