Is anyone watching this? Kristen Bell narrates!

horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 01:28 (eighteen years ago)

Didn't realize it started tonight. Will have to download instead.

milo z, Thursday, 20 September 2007 01:30 (eighteen years ago)

WHO WANTS THE BOOKS?

Laurel, Thursday, 20 September 2007 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

FUCK THIS SHOW FOR CUTTING THE TOP MODEL PREMIERE IN HALF.

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 20 September 2007 01:32 (eighteen years ago)

okay I'm totally going to be addicted to this show.

horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 02:01 (eighteen years ago)

i have no idea what this is
don't make me go to the internet, plus it'll be better if people just explain it here with words and maybe pictures

rrrobyn, Thursday, 20 September 2007 02:55 (eighteen years ago)

okay, well, I don't know anything about the books but it's kind of like Cruel Intentions, but serialized? (didn't they already make a show like that?)

set at a schmancy Manhattan private school, it's about, you know, high school drama, with the added stress of being very rich and beautiful. the central formal conceit is that what the show is about is being reported on a gossip blog kept by anonymous "gossip girl"=Kristen Bell voiceover.

do you want me to recap the first episode, rrrobyn?

horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 02:58 (eighteen years ago)

this is Serena:

http://www.cwtv.com/shows/gossip-girl/gallery/101/images/c/0002/cw-gossipgirl-genericshow-gl-17_007031-312e41-500x280.jpg

she's the former bad girl who skipped town under mysterious circumstances and has just returned in time for school to start. everyone is apparently in love with her.

horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 03:01 (eighteen years ago)

oh, wait, here's a full cast photo:

http://www.cwtv.com/shows/gossip-girl/gallery/101/images/c/0002/cw-gossipgirl-genericshow-gl-07_006724-c9248b-500x280.jpg

horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 03:01 (eighteen years ago)

I swear the show is at least a little better than that picture makes it look!

horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 03:02 (eighteen years ago)

hmm
i think i will pass on this, as much as i love shows about highschool
is it funny in any way?

they all look like dicks

rrrobyn, Thursday, 20 September 2007 03:03 (eighteen years ago)

i miss the o.c.

rrrobyn, Thursday, 20 September 2007 03:06 (eighteen years ago)

funny doesn't seem to be its main investment. it's sort of serious and arch at the same time. moments of clever dialogue and the acting is pretty good (except for the date rapist guy who is totally ridiculous.)

horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 03:06 (eighteen years ago)

the ones who don't come off as dicks are former bad girl Serena and slightly less rich dude Dan.

horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 03:06 (eighteen years ago)

Serena looks cuet

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 20 September 2007 03:06 (eighteen years ago)

she is the blonde girl from Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. shut up.

horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 03:07 (eighteen years ago)

the whole blogging thing about this is kind of stupid and annoying. but kristin bell sounds just like laurie anderson when she says "xo xo"

akm, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:07 (eighteen years ago)

Like many shows that are on TV, I'd love to watch this one.

jaymc, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:22 (eighteen years ago)

I saw the first half, and I was wondering if Jaymc caught it (it's written by the creator of the O.C.). I like that Serena character a lot, so that's enough to keep me involved.

Eazy, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:23 (eighteen years ago)

I would watch this, but I can't, because it will be cancelled :(.

svend, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:27 (eighteen years ago)

Nah, it's on the CW. That guarantees at least a full season.

milo z, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:28 (eighteen years ago)

you'd think it'd have a built-in audience, too, because the books are pretty popular, right?

am I ever going to get tired of watching shows set in high school?

horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:36 (eighteen years ago)

i would probably watch this randomly if i came across it, but, like antm, i will never be home to see it :\

tehresa, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:37 (eighteen years ago)

It was a good one to watch on the treadmill at the gym tonight. With all kinds of racy commercials, too.

Eazy, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:39 (eighteen years ago)

xxpost Those books are extremely popular. Esp with late teens/early twentysths.

The guy in the pic, at the bottom, looks extremely familiar.

stevienixed, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:11 (eighteen years ago)

I was wondering if Jaymc caught it

Nope, I had band practice. (And actually, twice-a-week band practice makes me forget that TV even exists on nights when I do happen to be home.)

jaymc, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:18 (eighteen years ago)

i have band practice twice a week and i don't forget the existence of tv
and i don't even have a tv

rrrobyn, Thursday, 20 September 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

the guy dan is the new jesse bradford.

mizzell, Thursday, 20 September 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)

hoping there will be an encore presentation.

carne asada, Thursday, 20 September 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

The new CW lineup is... surprisingly... solid-looking. WTF.

Will M., Thursday, 20 September 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

i miss the o.c.

sunny successor, Thursday, 20 September 2007 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

actually, ive read these gossip girl books and im quite a fan of blair. i havent seen the premiere yet. recorded it though.
the guys look like idiots in those photos but theyre pretty much idiots in the books too. i hope they dont censor the drugs etc for the tv

sunny successor, Thursday, 20 September 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

oh and i hope they keep blairs bulmia as an accepted thing instead of making it an afterschool special type lesson.

sunny successor, Thursday, 20 September 2007 17:55 (eighteen years ago)

I AM GOING OT A REPRINT MTG TO DECIDE HOW MANY COPIES OF THESE BOOKS TO PRINT. PLS WATCH SHOW AND GO BUY THEM*.

*Or email me.

Laurel, Thursday, 20 September 2007 17:55 (eighteen years ago)

*bulimia

waht does that mean, laurel?

sunny successor, Thursday, 20 September 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

i hope they dont censor the drugs etc for the tv
so far chuck smokes a lot of weed and serena appears to have a drinking problem.

mizzell, Thursday, 20 September 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

they show date rapist dude smoking weed constantly. but he is a date rapist, so I guess they're saying weed is bad.

horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

weed always make me want to rape too

carne asada, Thursday, 20 September 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

ha!

horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

is chuck gay yet?

sunny successor, Thursday, 20 September 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

omg sunny, no!

horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

oo..spoilerz! SORRY

sunny successor, Thursday, 20 September 2007 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

ok i watched this

rrrobyn, Saturday, 22 September 2007 18:27 (eighteen years ago)

i don't like the narration but i could get into the show
obv has same structure as the o.c. but sadly is not set in california and is lacking in peter gallagher

rrrobyn, Saturday, 22 September 2007 18:32 (eighteen years ago)

oh how i long for those eyebrows

tehresa, Saturday, 22 September 2007 18:37 (eighteen years ago)

The actress who plays Blair was driving me crazy, looking like some hybrid of Rory and Lyla from Friday Night Lights. And then I looked her up and found out she was Debbie, girlfriend of Behrooz "you are not your father's son" on 24, and Carrie Bishop on Veronica Mars. I can finally rest easy now.

Yerac, Saturday, 22 September 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

i felt like all the characters looked like other people! or like people on the oc! felt dizzy for the first 25 min b/c of it

after watching this i watched the last couple of eps from s6 of degrassi. that show owns

rrrobyn, Saturday, 22 September 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

how do the books work? i've been searching on amazon.co.uk but it's CONFUSING as idon't know which one is the first. or are they not serialized (???)?

stevienixed, Saturday, 22 September 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

this is from wiki, nath:

1. Gossip Girl
2. You Know You Love Me
3. All I Want Is Everything

5. I Like It Like That
6. You're the One That I Want

sunny successor, Sunday, 23 September 2007 13:10 (eighteen years ago)

Oh thanks! After I made my post, I realizeds: Just wiki that shit, stupid Nath!
I think I managed to put the compendium (?) in my Amazon basket. Can't resist these books! :-)

stevienixed, Sunday, 23 September 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

tehresa, Thursday, 3 December 2009 10:33 (sixteen years ago)

uh, nate and serena are the hottest couple on tv, like, ever

Do you love me now? (surm), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 21:02 (sixteen years ago)

But what about the abandonment of "Karen Finley" mentioning gal

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 22:21 (sixteen years ago)

I've never seen GG and I never watched the OC, but I looked forward to watching the 'L.A. in the 80s' spin-off "Lily," (starring Brittany Snow and tom Cruise-impersonator Miles Fisher). Why on earth was this not picked up by the CW?

Cunga, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 23:08 (sixteen years ago)

Because GG hardly does great in the ratings dept already so a spinoff ended up not making a lot of $en$e to CW

musically, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 03:12 (sixteen years ago)

Ah, i see.

But then why commission a spin-off pilot to start? That's like beginning the human cloning process before remembering that the person being cloned has an IQ of 78.

Cunga, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 04:23 (sixteen years ago)

Gossip Girl started off strong, and I imagine crafting that episode probably had a longer lead time than average. And at the very least it was a buzz-worthy GG ep (I didn't watch the show at that time but was hearing all about it).

musically, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 04:40 (sixteen years ago)

it was fine as an episode, not particularly whatever

Do you love me now? (surm), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 04:46 (sixteen years ago)

and i think GG is strong at this time, in terms of quality -- it had a definite bullshit phase last season

Do you love me now? (surm), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 04:46 (sixteen years ago)

Doesn't the exec producer of GG (the same guy who did the OC - Josh Schwartz - thanks, Wikipedia) always do this, where he'll have this buzz-worthy show that is much talked about and occasionally riveting but then it starts a steep decline way too soon? Wasn't that the problem with the OC? Didn't that shows' second season have a bullshitty phase, too?

Cunga, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 04:56 (sixteen years ago)

yes

Do you love me now? (surm), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 05:00 (sixteen years ago)

but i don't know if that one ever got better

Do you love me now? (surm), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 05:01 (sixteen years ago)

Last season of The OC was the second best of the series.

Mordy, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 05:26 (sixteen years ago)

fuck u

Do you love me now? (surm), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 05:36 (sixteen years ago)

haha just kidding xo

Do you love me now? (surm), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 05:36 (sixteen years ago)

imho. The series really improved after they killed Mischa Barton.

Mordy, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 05:45 (sixteen years ago)

mischa barton's a fuckup with no skillz. sad thing about her recently cancelled "the beautiful life" . . . .

Do you love me now? (surm), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 05:49 (sixteen years ago)

shes so nice to look at though

drinking coke in the kitchen with a kid that doesnt know his n (sunny successor), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 21:21 (sixteen years ago)

the oc went to shit after the novelty of how improbably beautiful mischa barton is wore off

plaxico (I know, right?), Thursday, 10 December 2009 00:37 (sixteen years ago)

Improbably beautiful? Were her parents hideous monsters?

Cunga, Thursday, 10 December 2009 00:41 (sixteen years ago)

that sandy guy was memorably gross

plaxico (I know, right?), Thursday, 10 December 2009 00:44 (sixteen years ago)

keeeeerstin was hot though

plaxico (I know, right?), Thursday, 10 December 2009 00:45 (sixteen years ago)

Improbable, but not impossible, it seems.

Cunga, Thursday, 10 December 2009 00:46 (sixteen years ago)

summer kicked everyone's ass though, no question

Do you love me now? (surm), Thursday, 10 December 2009 15:14 (sixteen years ago)

that last season of the oc where mischa barton's pothead sister showed up was pretty good iirc

Lamp, Thursday, 10 December 2009 19:51 (sixteen years ago)

the real problem w/gg btw is that is seems to want to make the old ppl the moral center of the show but is unaware of loathsome and boring and terrible they are

Lamp, Thursday, 10 December 2009 19:53 (sixteen years ago)

wait so was that chuck's mom?

tehresa, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 02:46 (sixteen years ago)

That is what she is gonna say in March when the show comes back.

svend, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 03:46 (sixteen years ago)

The third season of The O.C. was the shitty season. It rebounded a bit for the fourth and final, but it was too late by that point.

ten months pass...

Downloaded the second season of Gossip Girl - so weird how it wanted to be OC East, I think, but missed out on everything that made everyone in The OC likable (or interesting, at the least). Blake Lively and Leighton Meester are v. v. pretty, tho.

two months pass...

Speaking of The O.C., I never knew anything about this idea:

There were plans to turn the show into something of a reverse spin-off. Schwartz being the creative force behind the television series Gossip Girl planned to release a spin-off entitled Valley Girls, originally to premiere in the fall of 2009. Schwartz wanted to tie in the younger versions of the characters from both The O.C. and the principals from Valley Girls to establish a continuity with Gossip Girl.

LILY - omg the episode of lily's downfall was my fav episode

(not bc i dislike lily - i think kelly rutherford is aMAYzing on this show - just a great ep)

I'm unsure about this new one on three listens yet, but the song where Mark constantly rhymes about Gossip Girl plotlines is pretty LOL.

series finale

anyone else bother watching?

gyac, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 23:28 (thirteen years ago)

YES. What did you think, single other ILX viewer?

I know objectively speaking that the show is terrible, but it's me and and my partner's comfort viewing, and we'll both quite miss it.

Chuck_Tatum, Thursday, 20 December 2012 14:37 (thirteen years ago)

otm ^^

just1n3, Thursday, 20 December 2012 16:19 (thirteen years ago)

Yes, it was completely terrible, but I loved the final episode in a ridiculous way.

The ending is incredibly awful (and dark!) though, but if they were going to do the reveal I suppose it made sense in a fucked-up way.

I was reminded of when it was great/watchable (s1, s2) and that was about the most I could expect from the finale.

gyac, Friday, 21 December 2012 17:56 (thirteen years ago)

was really happy that lily ended up with scheming jerk ex

mh, Friday, 21 December 2012 19:10 (thirteen years ago)

poor pretty Nate, after all that trouble trying to uncover Gossip Girl's identity, he doesn't even get to find out for himself.

I'm gonna miss Georgina the most.

Roz, Friday, 21 December 2012 19:28 (thirteen years ago)

Biggest surprise of the six seasons -- Liz Hurley was actually pretty great in this show. I mean, wooden as fuck, but somehow great nonetheless.

My favourite period of this show was the second season, when every episode it was Blair or Chuck doing the "I love you," "We can't do this now" conversation, and even thought they did it every bastard episode, it was somehow ALWAYS HEARTBREAKING.

Chuck_Tatum, Sunday, 23 December 2012 21:58 (thirteen years ago)

oh wait is this where I post the trailer for the new one

anyone else watch the premiere? thoughts?

i liked it, though the main boyfriend's guilty rich/wokeness thing is a bit heavy-handed and not sure about spoiling GG's identity so early on gives the premise a bit of an expiry date

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Thursday, 8 July 2021 15:11 (four years ago)

I liked it too but criticisms that it's devoid of humor are OTM; the teachers are kind of funny but the kids are not, so there is a big Blair/Dorota shaped hole in the middle of the show.
