stunning. three stars. gordo has done it again. my compliments to the chef.

could television be more entertaining?

also glad it wasn't up against kid nation, cuz i really wanted to see that. kid nation, though entertaining, couldn't match Peter's Italian Restaurant.

scott seward, Thursday, 20 September 2007 03:23 (eighteen years ago)

This was awesome - I think I'm going to like it even more than Hell's Kitchen. I was just waiting for Gordan to throw down with that Peter dude. Chef's got some soccer hooligan moves up his sleeves that he's saving for a special occasion.

Moodles, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:14 (eighteen years ago)

yah this was fucking amazing, whatta bangin first ep!

chaki, Thursday, 20 September 2007 05:54 (eighteen years ago)

I love the UK version - hopefully I'll get to see this.

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:56 (eighteen years ago)

I liked it, although less drama and more kitchen stuff would be fine by me (ya rite).

Jordan, Thursday, 20 September 2007 13:53 (eighteen years ago)

So hugely enjoyed this, but wanted to see Gordon smack Peter a few times.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 20 September 2007 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

I loved the looks on all the people's faces when gordon finally told off peter. that guy was nuts.

mizzell, Thursday, 20 September 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

Main difference between this version and the UK version that with the UK one, I'm cheering for the restaurants and want them to succeed. In the US version I want them to fail.

I hate the narration.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 20 September 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)

Suuuuucked. Will give another chance when the Sopranos aren't involved.

milo z, Thursday, 20 September 2007 23:54 (eighteen years ago)

just watched it. does gordon solve all problems by throwing money at them? is he contractually required not to fire anyone?

abanana, Friday, 21 September 2007 00:08 (eighteen years ago)

after watching that i would never eat in that restaurant

carne asada, Thursday, 27 September 2007 13:50 (eighteen years ago)

That was strange. I felt kind of bad that those restaurants agreed to invite him in.

I didn't watch the end. Did that GM get fired?

Misery, Thursday, 27 September 2007 13:51 (eighteen years ago)

gordon on larry kin g was good

danbunny, Thursday, 27 September 2007 13:54 (eighteen years ago)

Gordo pretty much forced him to quit. but they did keep that chief that he brought in as a consultant. so that was cool
xpost

carne asada, Thursday, 27 September 2007 13:54 (eighteen years ago)

carne asada, Thursday, 27 September 2007 13:55 (eighteen years ago)

Jordan, Thursday, 27 September 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

s1ocki, Thursday, 27 September 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

4 episodes in, it's not very good compared to the british series. Waaaaaay too much overview (the first 6 minutes or so of each episode are useless) and they make Ramsay out to be a miracle worker. I liked how Ramsay occasionally failed in the original series.

abanana, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 06:56 (eighteen years ago)

Good point -- the UK version is much more honest (and Gordon is less of a cartoon character). The US version is a bit sensationalized. Last week's was irritating, as just as they snatched victory out of the jaws of defeat (if the narrator is to be believed), the dude ended up selling the restaurant six months later -- they just sort've glossed over it.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)

The owner should never, ever have been running a restaurant or any kind of business in the first place. The problem was that his location was excellent and they gave him a free renovation, so he sold out. That is what I really hate about the US version - the EXTREME RESTAURANT MAKEOVER, which destroys the "teach a man to fish" aspect so appealing in the UK version.

dethkiller, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

a poor sibling to the uk version. so much of the show is taken up with *dramatic music* AND THEN THIS HAPPENED and THIS IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN and so much pointless hollywood blockbuster drama shit. still watchable but christ why did it have to go to Fox. how many episodes is this us series? hopefully the uk one will return soon but i guess he won't be getting anywhere near as much money.

oh and one of the most unforgivable things is how they switch about the timeline so it looks like something terrible is happening in front of the customers - but a careful eye can see that due to the lighting/the tone it's actually a long time after customers have gone and likely about a different issue altogether. this happened most obviously in the one with the chubby ricky gervais hostess guy but im sure it's a regular trick. the producers get away with this by having a tiny-fonted disclaimer for a cpl of milliseconds at the end of the show. thankfully this wouldn't happen on uk tv due to all this tv realism 'scandal' going on - which is mostly bullshit but at least it keeps the top bods on their toes - would this ever in a million years happen in us tv?

NI, Thursday, 18 October 2007 00:14 (eighteen years ago)

DID YOU NOTICE: when gordon and the owner guy were talking about how great everything went the tablecloths went back to blue from white?

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 18 October 2007 06:44 (eighteen years ago)

eight months pass...

have been watching this on hulu. kind of addicted, except most episodes have the same story arc. left off w/ sebastian's last night. that dude is CRAZY. apparently he shut down and moved back to boston. guess his acting AND cooking careers are over... no franchising :(

tehresa, Friday, 11 July 2008 16:52 (seventeen years ago)

the sebastian's spot has been replaced by another italian restaurant called robano's:

two months pass...

new episodes started last week, i think. still pretty dumb and manipulative but compelling. this last episode (giuseppi's) features TWICE as many vague, flailing hand gestures from gordon as usual.

I've just been binge watching this recently and wonder to what extent it's staged. Is it nearly a docudrama rather than fly on the wall.
Is it scripted? & how many takes do people get.
There seems to be something a little stilted about it. But I keep watching it.

& after noting that it goes out on Fox (as did Fringe as I noticed from links in the program) I'm wondering about the Fox set up. Fox TV is the TV branch of Twentieth Century Fox which became famous for films. It is their News branch that is though of as seriously right wing isn't it?

So does taht reflect back on the TV branch?

Is the formula to Kitchen Nightmares taht misguided or possibly lazy people who are mismanaging a food outlet get the visit from the master who directs them to the right direction. & in redemption they become hardworking people who are repaid for their effort by success or if they lapse back into old ways they will suffer the consequences.
is that a potted version of the American Dream?

After which our sensei rides off into the sunset or at least walks off into the distance after delivering his monologue about the lesson learned to the camera.

Stevolende, Sunday, 24 January 2016 19:59 (nine years ago)

I can't comment on Kitchen Nightmares but I'd venture that the editorial stance of Fox News and even the general everything of the Murdoch family have little to no effect on how Fox's TV network, cable entertainment channels (FX/FXX) or film studios are perceived or marketed in the US.

pizza rolls are a food that exists (silby), Sunday, 24 January 2016 20:03 (nine years ago)

Wondering also who does the paying when GR installs a chef in a place for a month or whatever. Is that actually him or the TV network. I'm assuming the latter, along with whatever improvements are made to decor or kitchen.
Or does the business itself wind up paying for things when it breaks even?

Stevolende, Monday, 25 January 2016 01:14 (nine years ago)

Also what is the likelihood that people at some point in the future are going to look back at some of these post makeover restaurant looks and think how hideous? Has anybody reredone theirs to something actually palatable?

I've been wondering how long a supposedly overnight makeover takes. there have been a few occasions where they've shown apparently custom designed art and installations that presumably couldn't be done overnight. So is overnight actual installation of work that's taken place over a much longer period of time.
I'm assuming that especially in Hotel hell a lot of the material used is done for promotion/advertising/product placement as an end in itself. Certainly in Hotel hell they tend to show boxes of Overstock.com product and otherwise Gordon will give the name of the cutlery/delph providers in KN.
