I still have slugs in my house despite pouring poison every evening. :-( Bastards! *shakes fist*

nathalie, Friday, 21 September 2007 08:28 (eighteen years ago)

Slugs make me want to vomit. Snails are fine, I can even see the beauty in them, but slugs, I don't know.

I remember my gran telling me that she was in the garden one day 'salting' the slugs, when she turned round her youngest son was following her popping the slugs into his mouth.

I'm gagging just recounting this.

this fella was a fair size. I left him in the bath on this particular evening and then the next day didn't have time to get the old bowl and paper out to rescue him. So i just left a life-line towel draped into the bath. He was gone when i returned, so he's in the house somewhere

ooo

Ste, Friday, 21 September 2007 10:49 (eighteen years ago)

So i just left a life-line towel draped into the bath.

i've only just discovered the fact that spiders only hang about in baths because they can't get out! i had no idea.

CharlieNo4, Friday, 21 September 2007 10:50 (eighteen years ago)

I don't freak out about spiders in the house, but I like them better outside.

Oilyrags, Friday, 21 September 2007 10:59 (eighteen years ago)

Also, to answer Stan's question:

No, but I'm thinking maybe 'Cuddles'.

Oilyrags, Friday, 21 September 2007 10:59 (eighteen years ago)

What a pretty spider.

The only (living) things I dislike in my house are actually ants. Slugs, snails, spiders,... Who cares? I'm not too fussed by it really. That said, the first time I saw that slug/snail (yeah, I know, ILX, you told me the diff but I can't be arsed to remember it) I thought it was some doggie excrement so freaked out when I saw it suddenly move. But all the others I picked up and threw away. Sadly (well, not really) I use poison so it usually involved cleaning up some smile cause they broke in two.

Spiders? As a kid I would gently pick'em up and carry them through the shop outside. The clients of course mostly freaked out. I didn't care, I wanted them alive and outside. :-)

nathalie, Friday, 21 September 2007 11:35 (eighteen years ago)

if you look at the original spider (sans handbag etc) it actually looks like noel fielding!

CharlieNo4, Friday, 21 September 2007 12:57 (eighteen years ago)

Two of those dudes have been living on our front porch for a few weeks. They build massive webs and then draw it all up in the morning. There's also these weird crab looking spiders I don't like.

Ms Misery, Friday, 21 September 2007 13:11 (eighteen years ago)

There was one of these that used to spin its web across my front door each morning. I used to half expect to one day come home from work only to find the drained husk of a postman slumped on my doorstep.

Stone Monkey, Friday, 21 September 2007 13:22 (eighteen years ago)

Nathalie, you need a dehumidifier! You can't keep using poison with babies in the house!

Beth Parker, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

Diatomaceous earth sprinkled at their entrance points supposedly works, too.

Beth Parker, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

www.whatsthatbug.com!!

Laurel, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

Beth, it's in the kitchen (behind the shop). I also vacuum the poison away once we arrive in the morning! There's no exposure. :-)

nathalie, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

The only (living) things I dislike in my house are actually ants.

Amazing. My college roommate/housemate felt the same way. He despised ants. I don't understand this at all! Of any of the household creatures - spiders, ants, moths, roaches, mice, centipedes, etc - I would pick ants wayyyyy above anything else. Most of the household ants are very tiny anyways (not like the big black ones who live outside), they don't bite, they don't breed/contaminate at the level of roaches, and they're certainly not anywhere near the grossness of centipedes. They even move slowly so you don't lose track of them. Centipedes and spiders can really just flyyyy when they crawl.

Mark Clemente, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

Well, I should have added taht we don't have cockroaches in this area at all, so I don't know how I would feel if we did have'em and if I would prefer'em over ants or not. I should also add that we once came home from a trip and discovered ants in our jar of choco paste. EWIE! It's the confrontation of ants just invading our kitchen closets... *shudder* I don't have that with spiders.

Also never had a big mice problem. Over the years we had maybe one or two mice but that's it and I actually never saw'em. My parents did. So...

nathalie, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:29 (eighteen years ago)

Ant proliferate more rapidly than any of the other guys, and they're a seasonal invasion, like horrible tourists.

Beth Parker, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

guys you are all traitors to your phylum

as chordates it is our duty to flush out and destroy arthropods wherever we can. although it can be acceptable to leverage one against another.

Nobody loves lampreys. OK, maybe Steve Carrell.

Oilyrags, Friday, 21 September 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

I was under the impression that spiders end up in bathrooms because they can consume dried human skin flakes and survive.

Miza Din II, Friday, 21 September 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

I wish they could consume mildew.

Mark C, Friday, 21 September 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

Actually I think that's mites you're thinking of, and I'll bet you money there's WAY more skin in yr bedroom, between sheets & dirty clothes & mattresses. Bathrooms have v few soft furnishings and generally get sterlized/hosed down/etc more than bedrooms do (which is to say, at all).

we so infrequently use our front door that the entryway had recently become a temple of doom-like catacomb, i felt like shelob was gonna jump me at any minute as i was cleaning it up yesterday. i captured half a dozen large spiders and released them to the front lawn.

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:06 (thirteen years ago)

Sunny was telling me Australian horror stories about spiders the other night. Makes me glad we only get mosquitos and the occasional ladybug.

pplains, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:08 (thirteen years ago)

I saw tons of huntsman spiders growing up. Fucking huge bastards. But they're pretty common, and not really all that dangerous. Just ick to see. Never saw a redback, but our part of the country was too far south I think. Redbacks usually like the warmer climes.

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:12 (thirteen years ago)

I saw a recluse spider in our yard three years ago and I'm still paranoid about getting bit by one.

Nicole, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:25 (thirteen years ago)

black widows give me the creeps

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:26 (thirteen years ago)

Harmless spiders don't bother me, daddy long legs and little money spiders or whatever, but unfamiliar and/or spiders I know to be poisonous, I will not go anywhere near.

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:27 (thirteen years ago)

To be honest if I start thinking about any type of spider for too long I end up having a panic attack. Even daddy long legs just disturb me so much.

Nicole, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:28 (thirteen years ago)

this is not a good thread for you

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:36 (thirteen years ago)

N has started making ME take out the bins at nite cos he is terrified of getting spiders all over his hands from the bin-handles. Bloody great wussbag man!

Lindsay NAGL (Trayce), Friday, 24 February 2012 04:30 (thirteen years ago)

BTW orbweavers are FAST! I blundered into one's web a few months back stretched across the front gate, and half an hour later the web was mostly repaired, so amazing.

Spiders are kinda cute, imo
