Well, Anthony, funnily enough I've just interviewed her. She was former anorexic so needing something else to control, the 'girls', in order to make her own life more sane. She even did her own wedding as a 'performance'.

Lately the work is commenting on other political things; the nudity is to make people unsure of 'where to look'. If you get the April issue of my Edgy Style Magazine all will be revealed.

Well, Vanessa has done the degrees and has actually gone outside her own problems to make something really complex. It would be too simplistic to call it therapy art but all artists (I believe) do the art because they've got something eating away inside them that they need to process. She started her practice of having a phalanx of girls when she was still a painter, to make her openings more interesting TO HER and correlates back to the tradition of the nude in Renaissance art - she is Italian and simply putting a new spin on old uses.

As for the sailors, I went to USS Intrepid, moored in the Hudson, in 2000 to see a Beecroft 'installation' consisting of a platoon of marines. I was excited to be on a battleship, and because I met Jeff Koons (whose first words to me were 'Ah Momus, people are talking about you a lot on the internet!'). The performance was meant to happen on deck, but because it was raining they moved it downstairs. I'm sure Ant would have preferred the sailors to get soaked to the skins through those pristine white uniforms, then strip off, getting naked from the waist down, like the room full of girls I saw in another of Miss B's installations at the ICA in London. (Oddly powerful it was too.)
