Sealand?! winner.

Merdeyeux, Monday, 24 September 2007 11:45 (eighteen years ago)

I voted Zanzibar but was tempted to go for Sealand. Considering Palestine is now recognised by FIFA I don't see why, say, Tibet couldn't be.

Matt DC, Monday, 24 September 2007 11:46 (eighteen years ago)

with its population of ~10, Sealand could probably squeeze a home draw out of England.

Merdeyeux, Monday, 24 September 2007 11:47 (eighteen years ago)

That was really my reason for setting this up, I find it bizarrely fascinating which countries that FIFA is prepared to acknowledge and which ones it isn't. If Palestine is a country, there's no reason that Northern Cyprus isn't.

lol at Northern Cyprus's star player being a striker from Bognor Regis Town, though.

xp

No Basque country, no credibility.

Matt DC, Monday, 24 September 2007 11:54 (eighteen years ago)

voted TRoNC, gotta show some solidarity, plus we have more or less the same cuisine and it rules

On December 18, 2006, the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, stated that he did "not preclude the possibility that the Vatican, in the future, could put together a football team of great value, that could play on the same level as Juventus, Roma, Inter Milan and Sampdoria".

Dom Passantino, Monday, 24 September 2007 11:59 (eighteen years ago)

Presence of Cornwall in that list = just silly. Valencia = even weirder.

The idea of the Vatican City having its own football team just prompts images of 11 priests running around on the pitch, Father Ted stylee.

Matt DC, Monday, 24 September 2007 12:01 (eighteen years ago)

The defence is a bit static on Easter Island.

Billy Dods, Monday, 24 September 2007 12:05 (eighteen years ago)

Really? I heard they had a rock at centre back.

Matt DC, Monday, 24 September 2007 12:06 (eighteen years ago)

At least one of the Easter Island statues has gone on to have a succesful football career:

blueski, Monday, 24 September 2007 12:47 (eighteen years ago)

The answer as I understand is the Sami nation of lapland, who won something like 20-0 in the final of the first unofficial world cup for countries that don't exist.

Mark C, Monday, 24 September 2007 13:27 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for Tibet, which at least *was* a country until it was invaded by China.

I find no evidence online of an independence movement in South Lower Saxony, although I did find out that they spoke a Slavic language called Sorbian.

Grandpont Genie, Monday, 24 September 2007 13:33 (eighteen years ago)

Presence of Cornwall in that list = just silly

Don't knock the Cornish international side, we stuck three past Trinidad and Tobago. That's one more than England managed.

Admittedly they stuck six past us but, you know.

Matt, Monday, 24 September 2007 14:37 (eighteen years ago)

'just Scilly' pun avoided fortunately.

blueski, Monday, 24 September 2007 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

A let-off for us all, there.
