small hands = no shift P while resting on elbow

Just got offed, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 10:47 (eighteen years ago)

(I actually have big hands, hence being able to write this with one hand||||||||||||||||||}}}}}}}{}}HA)

Just got offed, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 10:48 (eighteen years ago)

There's two shifts you know.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 10:48 (eighteen years ago)

schooled :(

Just got offed, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 10:50 (eighteen years ago)

what about typing everything in lower case then going back and using shift and f3 (sometimes with control as well) to correct, as appropriate?

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 11:05 (eighteen years ago)

all caps

jhøshea, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 11:21 (eighteen years ago)

are you shouty in real life, jhøshea?

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 11:23 (eighteen years ago)

no im generally pretty soft-spoken. and actually loud talkers kinda get to me.

jhøshea, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 11:26 (eighteen years ago)

oh god my mate uses the arrow keys to go back one character then uses the 'Delete' key. JUST USE THE FLIPPIN BACKSPACE

Ste, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 09:43 (eighteen years ago)

haha, I have a colleague who, if she spots a mistake about three sentences back, deletes all the way back from where she is now to where the mistake was, then starts again. Use one mouse/arrow keys woman, it's REALLY annoying watching you do that.

ailsa, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 09:45 (eighteen years ago)

geek level 2: people who don't tab between fields in a form, but mouse/click type mouse/click type :-)

i bet that has been raised in another ILE thread already tho. i have just been stunned recently by how many people at my work do the caps lock thing. you don't notice it normally, but if you look out for it you (well I) see it all the time. being a computer support type person.

Alan, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 09:57 (eighteen years ago)

Aye, I think I mentioned the non-tabbing mouse/click type mouse/click thing on another thread as the thing that irritates me most about my husband :-)

ailsa, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 10:02 (eighteen years ago)

password fields are the giveaway. i don't know about PCs but on a mac a password field (always? usually? i can't recall) pops up a 'you have the caps lock on' symbol, so when someone does the quick on/off you see the symbol flash which it doesn't for usual hold-down shift. that and password security of 'must be mixed case' usually means the password has one initial cap.

Alan, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 10:06 (eighteen years ago)

xpost to Ailsa Haha - I remember that.

Watching other people do anything on a computer is utter torture and brings out the worst in me, especially if I need to GET ON!! Any requests for help either end up in me barking out a series of terse instructions ('why don't you just COPY AND PASTE IT!?' 'scroll DOWN!!') or saying irritatedly 'just let me do it, it'll be quicker'.

Usually I try to keep the irritation under control, but just silently BOIL with frustration while trying to keep a calm and helpful facade.

Dr.C, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 10:12 (eighteen years ago)

^me^

onimo, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 11:10 (eighteen years ago)

Haha the phrase "just let me do it, it'll be quicker" is probably going to be the one to end my marriage.

ailsa, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 11:12 (eighteen years ago)

tmi :P

onimo, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 11:12 (eighteen years ago)

"just let me do it, it'll be quicker" is the worst thing you can say in computer support. not because it offends (it probably does that to some, and depending on tone of voice!), but because people will take you up on it. ROD. BACK. OWN. MAKE.

Alan, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 12:42 (eighteen years ago)

I am not in tech support, I just have a very annoyingly slow husband (keep your mind out of that gutter please Onimo, cheers)

ailsa, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 12:44 (eighteen years ago)

Didn't we have a thread about this bizarre phenomenon before, bizarrely? (I have never heard of anyone doing it in real life)

Alba, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 12:52 (eighteen years ago)

"just let me do it, it'll be quicker" is the worst thing you can say in computer support.

Yeah it's not good in any situation. I try not do say it now. At home I used to kind of mean : neither of us wants to do this dull computer thing, so why don't I do it, so we can get it done quicker and do something more fun instead

Dr.C, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 13:08 (eighteen years ago)

See, I have no subtext, I really mean YOU ARE REALLY SLOW AND NOT AS GOOD AS ME. Luckily, he accepts this, things get done a lot quicker, I get out of my snappy mood quicker and everyone's a winner.

ailsa, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 13:14 (eighteen years ago)

Luckily, he accepts this

Hahaha - thank goodness. I realised that my subtext was being obscured by my tetchiness when her computer-related questions were prefaced by 'Pls don't shout at me, (but the computer's doing something odd...or whatever')

I am no better at computers than she, but I do tend to use them more. I am ignorant, but faster.

Dr.C, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 13:25 (eighteen years ago)

The other question is - how many capital letters in a row before you use caps lock rather than just holding down shift? I think it's 5 for me.

Mark C, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

I never use caps lock. My shoutiness on the internet has made me accustomed to typing with my little finger poised over the shift key at all times.

(Neil is an IT trainer, but I am still faster than him because I type and use computers a lot more whereas he just talks about it to people who don't understand things like shortcuts)

ailsa, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 13:36 (eighteen years ago)

I hardly use Caps Lock either. By the time I've decided it would have been worth turning it on, it's usually time to turn it off. Like turning off predictive text when I'm spelling a non-dictionary word on my phone.

Alba, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

I only use CAPS LOCK when I need to type VERY_LONG_VARIABLE_WITH_UNDERSCORES.

libcrypt, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

the guy who hit the caps lock and quit the caps lock

ken c, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

to thread

ken c, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

Seriously, if you use caps lock to shout you're lazy. YOU SHOULD HAVE TO HOLD SHIFT THE WHOLE TIME! IT ACTUALLY MAKES YOUR FINGERS FEEL LIKE THEY ARE SHOUTING.

Will M., Wednesday, 26 September 2007 17:23 (eighteen years ago)

What about when caps lock is on and you are too lazy to turn it off, so you type the first letter of a word and then hold down shift to type the rest in lowercase?

Jordan, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 17:23 (eighteen years ago)

holy shit Jordan i am going to have a uterus put in so i can have your babies because that is awesome.

Will M., Wednesday, 26 September 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

DOES NOT WORK ON MACS, JORDAN!! Caps lock will ONLY make things cap, it won't do the old typewriter standard of reversing either way. It drives me crazy that roommate's PC reverses both, actually.

Laurel, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 17:26 (eighteen years ago)

when i need capital letters i press the shift key five times, then press enter, then press shift once, then type the letter, then press shift key five times.

ken c, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 17:26 (eighteen years ago)

when i need more than one capital letters i press the shift key five times, then press enter, then press shift twice, then type the letters, then press shift once, then press the shift key five times

ken c, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

man i would haugh at that joke if i didn't hate shittykeys so much that i actually felt sad reading that

Will M., Wednesday, 26 September 2007 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

i'd laugh too

Will M., Wednesday, 26 September 2007 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

re: the thread title, please tell me no one does this

HI DERE, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

I hold shift even while I'm typing in all-caps fonts.

stet, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 17:46 (eighteen years ago)

hi dere - far more people than i ever imagined do this

Alan, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 17:49 (eighteen years ago)

I have caps lock enabled all the time and press shit when I need lower case.

Jarlrmai, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

Do they continue to do this after you've broken their fingers?

HI DERE, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

press shit when I need lower case.
press shit when I need lower case.
press shit when I need lower case.

Jordan, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

I love this thread.

moley, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 21:44 (eighteen years ago)

f off

Jarlrmai, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 22:00 (eighteen years ago)

I think you meant, f on. That's the problematic key, right?

libcrypt, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

Kinda like flame on, but not quite as fantastic.

libcrypt, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

My keyboard's right shift key is broken, so this thread has given me plenty of confusing/conflicting options to consider. Up until the breakage I used to do the hold-down-the-shift-key-while-typing-an-all-caps-sentence thing, but now I'm rediscovering the joys of the Caps Lock key.

snoball, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 22:42 (eighteen years ago)

eight years pass...

ffs the number of people who do this at work when typing in passwords is ridic, particularly as it causes them to enter their password incorrectly.
